One thing that is illustrated in this video but not talked about is how helpful it is for player immersion to have a world that's not only living (things are happening away from the PCs) but lived in (with locations having layers of history). The revelations at the end, looking at the extended map bits beyond the encounter map itself, immediately sparked ideas of how this battle is connected to some deeper, darker thing, and how the layout of the room itself was a result of some past interaction with that thing. That sort of thinking is great whether or not the deeper history has anything to do with the encounter, the adventure, or the party, because it shapes the way we think about the world. We're able to picture things in our minds, which helps us breathe life into the way we present the world to our players. It doesn't matter if any of that history comes up at all, or gets any mention at any time. Just it being there helps US get excited about the world, and that excitement makes us more engaging in everything we do. So, Dscryb continues to prove how awesome a resource it is, and we can take it as a lesson for our own location design. Figure out current-day reasons for encounters, and all that normal stuff, but take a moment somewhere along the way to ask yourself, "what happened here sometime in the past?" Get even just one idea. Maybe it leads you to work something into the environment or the encounter. Maybe it doesn't. That doesn't really matter. Just thinking about it will make the location a little more REAL in your mind, and that is what will make the world feel alive to your players.

That's terrific! Good luck! It's a bumpy ride from time to time but helping your friends have a good time is totally worth it. Super gratifying. And Mike has good advice so you're already off to a great start.

Dscryb is so strong, I wish I could use it more properly. But this video could help for more people to learn about it. Thanks for this video, here I can see another approach of how to make these encounters.

Good video, especially highlighting what abilities the enemies have that will both challenge the PCs, but also lean into their strengths. I especially appreciate that you included environmental considerations, because that's an element that is very easy to skip. The only thing I would add is to consider whether you expect this encounter to occur before or after other encounters, because that potentially impacts what resources the PCs have available.

21:40 Other than being a good example of how to build an encounter, this is a pretty good ad for Dscryb. I'm already thinking about story lines built off the bedrolls if you left them all in. Only 5 combatants, but 7 bedrolls- what happened to the other two? Maybe they were sacrificed, or maybe they were out foraging and are out for vengeance now.

I like to imagine the puppeteer bard seeks cover not for his own protection, but to better perform his puppet shows from behind a low wall, ala Jim Henson.

I've been a DM for a good long while and my best advice is to consider a theme that you can sprinkle throughout the game. Basically, decide what you want the final boss of an arc to be and how you can build up to it. I find this makes adding themed battles a lot easier. And you can drop hints as players progress through the story. It helps give everything a theme.

Love the videos Mike, but honestly the Twitch videos are hard for me to watch, because you smack your lips a lot. Probably a me-problem but wanted to let you know in case you were unaware this may be something that puts people off watching the video.

This seems like a LOT of damage to throw at a third level party. 6 Goblins with shortbows firing 2xturn with +4 to hit 17 damage per round. With the Nilbog dancing out in front, mocking and casting Tashas Hideous Laughter as a Marker, then all the gobbos attack with advantage, that can flatten one 3rd level PC/round. The Nilbog is SURPRISINGLY hard to smoosh for a CR1 monster, you need 2 successful hits, both of which have that saving throw. This isn't criticism, it's a SUPER useful video, just..I don't know that the numbers add up?

The original Nilbog gained HP as the party damaged it. Once when I didn't have time to prepare for a session I quickly modified the Nilbog to also gain in strength, hit dice (essentially the monster's "level" in AD&D terms), and AC in addition the the HP gain. And then walked it right up to their keep's gate challenging them to battle. They laughed, threw 300-400 HP worth of spells and attacks at it, and then had to fight a titan. They ultimately healed it to death with a "Heal" spell (heals the target for all but 1d4 HP and a smear of Keoghtom's Ointment. 😃 The most successful high level pull-it-outta-your-ass session I've ever had.
