Interestingly that same bearing is used in pre-war Riley 9 car rear axle pinion assemblies (about 27 quid through the Riley Register Spares if you're a member). Also known as an RMS9 bearing (SKF). They are also used as crankshaft bearings in some vintage Austin 7s. I think the earlier cars. The later ones used the MJT angular contact version.

The wheel is not lost, grind the hole oversize and press in a sleeve bush for the bearing, then grind the od to finish. I would use metal shielded bearings, shields that does very little resistance but prevents dust in the bearing...

A small note on the grub screws and the recommended practice when using them to lock a collar on a shaft. If you use two screws diametrically opposed in a 180° configuration so to speak the shaft is not pressed against the inside of the collar. Instead the two screws suspend the shaft within the collar. This results in poor alignment and a smaller contact are between shaft and collar. Best preactice is to use only one screw or clock them so that they are 90° or 120° apart. This way one or both screws press the shaft against the inside of the bore and create a linear contact which ist the most secure.

Wow, the clever use of babbitt to 'set' the components in place whilst the squaring jig holds everything true. Its like a magic trick revealed, Dom. I didn't understand how these adjustments are made on the Ranalah until I saw this video and the idea of just casting everything perfectly square did seems rather fantastical to imagine! The ingenuity of classic design and designers...so important to revive the Ranalah, if only to preserve these skills. Great vid Dom and you may have to donate a machine to a museum for posterity. (Rather that than leaving it on its side in a field, eh?)

Do you watch any "FloweringElbow" videos? He's made his own industrial grade CNC router and uses a somewhat related technique for getting bolted joints perfectly square by introducing a layer of metallised epoxy that ensures 100% contact. Well worth a watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZO1Xp9tprubh7s

Can I recommend using bearings with seals, I know the originals didn't but there dust is not ideal in a bearing let alone anything else. Also I know you are trying to keep it (as was) but you can easily make these with metric bearings (possibly car bearings that are pre assembled so simply pressed in job done & super heavy duty) and a sleeve even if you offer it as a cheaper option, lest face it, it will probably be just as capable.

Nice pour, and no shrinkage.marks. Bit of bridgeporting the four flats on the jig ? The right long term solution for the bearing, leave more for later. Interesting about the ends of the bar being differently stressed, , probably more of a problem with larger diameters. , bar end from scrap yards, the staple of the model engineer. A pleasure to see your methods.

Hi Dominic, I love to see your passion to bring back the Ranalah to it's original glory. But I hope you will look to provide an optional top wheel which is much lighter. I'm no metal shaper but I love to watch Proshaper (Wray Schelin) and he explains how a lighter wheel, which has less inertia, is less tiring to wheel for long periods. As every pass in the wheel requires the wheel to be accelerated and de-accelerated.

Hi Dominic, Love what you are doing and always great to see someone making the very best tool possible. That being said, I'm a hobbies and will probably never be able to cost justify buying your love tool, That being said I'm trying to figure out how to build a good English wheel cost effectively. The idea I've had for making the upper wheel is to use the outer race form a bearing. The nice thing with this is that the out race has already been heat treated and ground to a very high tolerance and as they are mass produced they should be cheaper? Now mounting it will be a bit tricky as you can't weld to it, as this would take it out of round, but I can think of a couple of different ways to mount the well. I know this is not what you are going for but any thoughts?

Dom, looking at the wheel the critical tolerance is the axis alignment in the vertical direction of the top and bottom wheels. It would be interesting to find the original qa docs and see what the original tolerance on this alignment was. You may get an idea by seeing what the requirement on modest wheels is, maybe something like the bailey?
@DominicChineas
@DominicChineas 2 жыл бұрын
I bet the original tolerance was not that great, as they made the lower wheel adjustable which can take up any miss alignment!

I think his whole point was to manufacture not just a copy but an original using as near the same materials, processes and procedures that the original Ranalah machines were made to. Hence using "Babbit" to align certain parts. If he decides to make the machines commercially then I am sure there would have to be changes made.
