This is a drive along all of Skyline Drive, south to north, in Shenandoah National Park. Shenandoah is one of the few NPs on the east coast, and the only one in Virginia. Skyline Drive goes along the tops of mountain ridges, offering big, impressive, distant views in its higher elevations. In this video, I take a look at the sites along the route, stop in several of the pullouts, and learn the history of life along the amazing Skyline Drive. It's a great road trip! This video was shot in November.

Shenandoah Valley is my favorite. Winchester, home of Country singer Patsy Cline and Stonewall Jackson in Lexington.

We are fortunate to live a half hour from the Northern Entry to Skyline Drive. During prohibition, the area was populated by a number of bootleggers and moonshiners. The genesis of the park was grounded in a desire to rid the area of the illicit enterprises. It became a bit of a tragedy for the families, who were poorly reimbursed for their homes, regardless of whether they were engaged in alcohol business. The park has finally acknowledged that eminent domain rights were abused, but it's still a sore point with the descendants nearly a century later. As you were driving Skyline Drive, the Appalachian Trail runs off to the side of the road the whole way. It's an amazing place for hiking, whether for a week or an afternoon (Mary's Rock is a superb day hike). BTW--I found it funny that the visitor's center had the song "Shenandoah" playing in the background when you visited it. It's a lovely song that was once even recommended for Virginia's state song in honor of the river that runs west of the park. However it ended up rejected because the song is actually about an Upstate New York chief (John Skenandoa) who never set foot in Virginia! However, Skenandoa supported George Washington in the French and Indian War. After that war, when appointed to map Virginia, Washington chose to honor his ally by naming the river after him.

Thanks guys! This is a park I personally didn't know much about at all. Despite growing up down in Georgia, somehow you never hear about it

Thanks another million Jeremy. Glad to see they named an overlook for you -- you deserve it. When I have driven the Skyline, it has felt like a strange extension or appendix to the Parkway, and I guess they were both built in the 30s, by the US government. So I wonder why they are not administered together -- or are they? Is there some history behind this? P.S. Where next? --charlie johnson, sacramento CA

Not sure, but I'd imagine that Shenandoah being a relatively small area, and BRP extending 469 miles through two states, made their administrations different. Or one inspired the other? Next is the trip back down to Florida - by Amtrak Auto Train!

Just got your note about the upcoming auto-train video, and I'm very eager to see it. Seems like such a great idea, but I wonder why it didn't catch on with any other routes? Maybe car rental was easier.

After seeing how it works, I think that it's just logistically a nightmare. Lots of extra space and equipment and workers are needed to load all the cars. Then again, it's Amtrak's most profitable route. Maybe they decided it's only viable on that part of the I-95 corridor...?
