And in the old days, vehicles will get on the larger elevator, drive through the tunnel, and take another larger elevator to get back on the street level on the other side of the river. As you mentioned that portion of the tunnel is now closed, but that's probably what makes this tunnel so unique.

*As slow as driving, as expensive as air travel, but ever so comfortable! And you really get to see a side of America people seldom see; the back sides of those businesses sure are dingy, dilapidated and neglected. But I do love the roomettes, rooms & suites! If I were an independently wealthy man of leisure I'd go everywhere by rail. Of course you can't go very far nowadays travel while you can folks. Passenger rail has been on life-support for ages and it can't last much longer, and rail routes are disappearing. How I wish we had the rail network of a century ago! I wish things moved by rail to cities and towns so that the highways weren't clogged with all these interstate over the road hogs.* 🫤

I didn't quite catch the route of the train but think you are Not Stopping in my area, Western Colorado Grand Junction. If you are ever stopped here and can get off the train for breakfast, right there Is a excellent restaurant called the Pufferbelly Restaurant right at the train station.

Saw other people sleeping on another channel in Coach seats, they reclined and had a foot rest that came out. Looked comfy. Also some confusion about being allowed to dine in dining car if in coach. One Guy said yes but all meals were $20.00 and seating is only what is available. Was this what you found eventually or what?

I had never taken Amtrak for an overnight ride before. The longest ride I had taken Amtrak on was between Brattleboro, VT and Newark, NJ, not to mention that I had to take a commuter train for a transfer at Newark, NJ.

To be fair, I made a trip to Florida to help a person move north. The flight we were to catch going down was cancelled due to weather. We could have driven down and arrived in a lot less time than it took to fly as the next flight was the next day.

QUESTION: u can take dogs on this train? hope the train stops every 4 hrs so the dogs can go potty! what if the dog makes a mess on the train? im glad they dont have to crate them. but i wd NOT want to encounter a pitbull or other aggressive dog on the train.

Amtrak is a mess. In China, they keep lines open even if for many years they take losses. They keep expanding the lines to permanently connect more cities and towns. There are benefits in the long term.

I never even considered this because of the cost, delays. I used to bang I-95 between NNJ and Key Largo(Miami) a lot. 18 hours was my record. That's bangin'. With stops for bathrooms and meals. Virginia, and the Carolinas are about 3 hours each, Georgia less than 2, Florida another 3 hours to get to an equal distance down the coast, Sanford would be out of my way. Very few travelers final destination on this train is Sanford, FL and they probably don't live in Lorton, VA----so there might be considerable driving to get on and leave the autotrain. Why someone would have to have their personal car in Florida on a vacation boggles the mind. But, perhaps a snowbird living in Florida half the year from Maryland or somewhere close to Lorton, this would make economic sense, instead of a 2nd car that just sat unused for a long time in Florida. I would suggest driving instead and breaking the trip up into parts..Take a side trip to Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head/Savannah, Charleston, Columbia, Charlotte, JAX Beach, St. Augustine. Pay for a $150 motel and have a fun day. For those wealthier individuals that have a Maserati or Rolls Royce, they don't use the autotrain, they don't even blink to have their car shipped professionally to Florida and back, and they fly private. The food in these cities I mentioned previously is a lot LOT better than the train microwave food you will receive for 20 hours on your train ride. Just drive your car, it's not that far. If your destination is Key West, Disney World, Miami Beach, Tampa/St.Pete---YOU DON'T NEED A CAR there. I f you are going to see Aunt Mabel in the middle of the Ocala forest, YES you will need a car, which you can rent in JAX or Gainesville that you flew into. Autotrain--I don't understand why this is still a thing. Great video!!

I'm a canadian. I would be leaving from Peterborough Ontario. My destination is Las Vegas Nevada. I have a cat. Is this permissible on roomette? Also on connecting buses? Do you have handicapped accessibilities? I am 71 and need a walker for left leg, Again, your connecting bus's also? I think taking the train would be quite an adventure for me. After Vegas for a week, onward to Oceanside Cal for a week. Can you give me info on train there? Thank-You so much!!!
