There's 6 different characters that have the same codename John, the original Snake goes by the codename Naked Snake. Later, he is given the name Big Boss. He starts out not accepting that title, so he continues to call himself Snake. Big Boss ends up in a coma, and his DNA is stolen during that time. And 3 clones are made, David and Eli who are twins, and George, who is a "perfect" clone of Big Boss. George becomes the second Snake when he adopts the name Solidus Snake. It's not clear when, butbits safe to assume it was before Big Boss woke from his coma. Because Big Boss is being hunted by the organization, CYPHER, they make up a guy to think he's Snake, and give him plastic surgery to look like him. He becomes Venom Snake. He's the third Snake. After Big Boss starts to solely address himself as Big Boss, he drops the Snake codename, and gives it to David when he joins FOXHOUND, Big Boss' organization. David's codename becomes Solid Snake. Once Venom Snake and Big Boss are both defeated by David, Eli resurrects FOXHOUND and becomes its leader. In order to oppose David, he takes on the name Liquid Snake, becoming the 5th Snake. Due to the colonel being an AI during the Sons of Liberty incident, he addresses Raiden as Snake only briefly. I hope this helps clear it up.

Just treat Snake as a last name of a huge family: Naked: The father of the house Solid and Liquid: Sons, Twins Solidus: Yet another son Vemon: Naked's adoptive (and brainwashed) brother. Who was mistaken for Naked all the time Raiden: some poor kid who hangs with Solid a lot. So was breifly mistaken as a Snake. Later when he finds himself, he starts using swords, tossing metal gears, kills an ex-president, and pick fights with a Senator

There are actually 3 clones - les enfants terribles : solid, liquid, solidus. Venom snake is not a clone, its just a human (not going to say who to not spoil) that was modified to look like jack aka big boss. There are also other "snakes" in the series but they are just derivations of these 5 persons

The main issue I have is that they clearly show the body of what’s supposed to be solidous snake in MGS4 and it’s missing the right eyeball which doesn’t make sense since solidous snake’s LEFT eye is the one that got got somehow, but whatever, let’s just say that in order to make it believable whenever was in charge of that swapped the eyes or whatever. Easy, HOWEVER, it doesn’t explain how Big Boss shows up at the end of MGS4 with ZERO burn marks. Burn marks that he would’ve received during his fight with solid snake in metal gear 2

Actually it was explained in MGS4 in the final cutscene, but most people zoned out because it’s wayyyy too long. Basically Big boss in MGS4 is the same one who died* in MG2, his body was reconstructed using technology and Solidus and Liquid’s skin *I think he fell into a coma I don’t exactly remember.

I thought they said in mgs4 that only solidus snake was a true perfect clone of big boss? Solid and liquid snake are only half clones of big boss. Each having either dominant or recessive genes whereas solidus had both dominant and recessive genes to be the perfect clone? So pretty much liquid and solid snake are more like sons of big boss rather than clones.

I appreciate the attempt to clear it up but, to be honest, parts of your explanation was just as confusing. I had to pause and rewatch parts of your video multiple times which I imagine is the opposite effect you're going for. With something as confusing as this; different characters with the same name and appearance, you need to be explicit when clarifying. That means no short off the cuff explanations and no having different snakes on the same screen when describing only one of them. Lol. In future, an example could be, "this is liquid snake. He is also a clone of Big Boss. Big Boss is also referred to as Naked Snake". Explicit and clear, instead of; "Liquid Snake is Solid Snake's twin brother". Edit: I still liked your video.

That aside , Punished Snake /Venom Snake is "Medic" aka his best soldier (who I thought is Grayfox or he became later ?! ) The good thing about MGS universe is ,you could interpret a lot of lazy/messy design choices into a much better plot in your head-fanfiction. My only wish would be to close the gab between MG PP & Metal Gear 1 which was before Solid Snake infiltrated Outer Heaven. update: I did check Snake Eater Ending and he was a double agent named "ADAM" .

Venom *is* Big Boss now. No, he and Naked Snake, the two of them together are Big Boss. Also, fun fact: the Big Boss you face at the end of Metal Gear was probably actually Venom Snake who took over Outer Heaven from Naked Snake so he could go do other stuff. And since Vemon is kinda the player, you end that game fighting yourself.

As someone who hasn't played MGS5 but has played the rest, can someone explain what the point of Venom Snake is? If he really is a random guy brainwashed to think he's Big Boss, the character sounds very pointless, irrelevant and didn't need to be part of the MGS story. I was hoping MGS5 followed the story of Big Boss after MGS3. Following some random guy sounds kind of lame story wise. But I'm probably missing a lot since I'm sure Kojima meant it to be deeper than that.
