The most hilarious part of this to me is that since Shakespeare often wrote violent plays with pornographic scenes and dirty jokes specifically to appeal to commoners (think "Titus Andronicus" for his most infamous example), so this actually seems like something he'd write if he lived today and decided to translate a hentai. This shit's AMAZING, lol. :D

That's why he was so popular, people could come to see a tragedy, a comedy, and if that wasn't their speed there were also swordfights featuring real pig gore effects. Technically, Shakespearean English is early modern english. An example of middle English is the Canterbury Tales. Middle English only lasted to about the 1400's if I remember correctly, and was then succeeded by the early modern english employed by and kept famous by William Shakespeare in his well known works. It's something that many people (myself included until recently) believe. If you wantexamples of Old, Middle and Early Modern english, look up OverlySarcasticProduction's video on Beowulf. They explain near the beginning, and are quite informative about it.

I'm not even a native English speaker, but somehow, while I don't understand a lot of it, whenever they struggle I know what the word means. Ydell is idle T'extende is The extend and visiteth'm is visit them. The pronunciation is not that different from modern English in many cases, just the spelling, and the fact that they shorten everything.
@MetroidMother4 жыл бұрын
@Icarus_BZ wel my native language is German, which has a hybrid origin between Nordic, Anglo-Saxon and Latin Language ancestry, so maybe it's helping a bit, but I'm no better with old German than old English. I also think I'm quite complacent compared to many other non negatives whene it comes to Englisch, as I learned the language whene I was living and going to school in Ireland, but I think your right about non native speakers bei g very analytical about the language if they hear new things, and drawing connections that native speakers wouldn't. It might have also helped that I had to read Shakespeare in their original shape both in Irland as well as in Germany.
@misss77774 жыл бұрын

I mean, as an English Language nerd, this is kinda hot, not gonna lie. Also, quick guide to pronouncing Shakespearean English, for the most part, every syllable should be pronounced as is. There aren't a lot of "silent letters" because there was no standard spelling yet. And if you have ever taken a foreign language class, vowels should sort of sound like that. Especially Germanic languages. This applies even more so to Chaucer, but Shakespeare is his contemporary, so his writing is as stylized as Chaucer's was.
