Great to see so many turn out! Those things have done great service for QANTAS and the people of Australia. Air New Zealand were the first airline to actually scrap a 400 and it left with barely any fanfair. Thanks for sharing

I can only imagine the thrill of those people seeing this magnificent plane land on only 5900 ft of runway. Wonderful job by the pilots. Unreal.

How is this historic? Why so many people? Why a 747 in this airport??

- First Qantas 747-400. - Qantas finally retiring this aircraft after 25.7 years of much appreciated service. - Donating to aircraft museum 'HARS' in Wollongong. - Illawarra Regional Airport's main runway is 5,968ft in length and only takes props. - Pilots used a $30m flight simulator to perfect this landing. - Had to take off almost empty from YSSY to land at YWOL. - Aircraft itself is record breaking (Flew 20hrs 9 mins from LHR-SYD, was the longest at that time). - Shortest 747 flight ever recorded - 12 minutes. Go figure............
