John Mayer was sitting in for a late-night TV host and Bob Weir, who was touring (post-Jerry's death) with his new band, was the musical guest. John Mayer sat in during the credits and left us with a beautiful Althea between him and Bobby. This was the origin of what is now Dead & Co. There were other groups with the original members (Phil Lesh, the bassist, still tours with his own band), and this has been the only line-up for Dead & Co. Thank you for your views on this! I went this past Saturday night and have been a loyal dead head since I was a teen. I will be 61 in 2 weeks and retired. This complex ( the sphere) is the greatest experience I have ever been fortunate to witness. To see your favorite jam band ,that one has been a fan for so long is mind blowing! Graphics , acoustics , shape, everything was beyond what you can imagine. No video is going to give you the sensory overload you witness inside during this Dead performance. A must see for ANY music fan period. Regardless of your favorite genre or performer: Go see Dead and company !

I was in Vegas for a meeting last week. Like others, I'll be 61 soon an have been a fan for over 40 years. I was able to score a great ticket for just above $100. I went completely sober and stayed sober and had one of the best times I've ever had at a concert. The Sphere is out of this world. Thanks for your excellent review.

I can agree. At the age of 61 years young, I have been going to concerts since the late 70's, experienced the GratefulDead early 80's and a faithful grateful DeadHead I evolved. Anyway this venue BLOWS MY MIND. Spectacular. It reminded me of experiencing substances that illegal then are now therapy at their concerts and again evolved. The ticket price is my only unpleasant thought.

those Vegas felony shows back in the 80's and 90's was never to be matched in Vegas, but the Sphere is a beast, U2 could not tame the venue, great visuals, who will tame that venue is still a unknown and looking forward to the Journey

You and me both. You got there earlier than I. I know people will say I missed out but I started in 92. Changed my life. I became kind. Connected to the earth and the sky and the inspiration was the Grateful Dead and also quit taking guitar lessons and played along to my tapes 2 sets a day. Different show every day. Rethought music. Then could pick and guitar, bass or drum to most genres. All because of this band. I only saw Jerry 30 times. But it’s been a game changer. And I’ve spoken and been encouraged by everyone here to try and overcome some serious health issues to come out and see this run. Gonna be tough. But I appreciate the love. It’s contagious🌹⚡️⚡️

Things happened different for me, Even though I began as a metal head & listened to all the same bands & music you mentioned. I then began to research about Jerry and the band ,& the more that I learned The more intrigued I became. But once I really gave them a real chance and listened to an entire show, I was forever stricken... From that day on I became a life long dead head. Still just very day I am blown away. Ha ha !! I was born in '69 , and coming into my teenage years in the 80's found the Dead's " Europe '72 Live " double album on vinyl at a yard sale and wore the grooves off it... I was already in love. Made my first pilgrimage to see them live , driving from Cape Cod off the coast of Mass. to what have now become the legendary shows at the Alpine Music Ampitheater in Wisconsin in '89 that they made the video " Downhill From Here " about. One of Jerry's finest performances in the later stages of the Brent Mydland era.. Mind blown and it was then that I realized what I was seeing was a truly one of a kind unicorn and vowed I would take this experience in every time I had the chance ... 160 + times later and only wish it was more.... bless you bro

I don't normally agree but you did a fine assessment of the whole Dead/Sphere experience. The Jerry thing I totally agree with and that is why the comment. I'm 71 and saw the Dead many many times with Garcia. To not give more kudos to him is a shame. After Jerry's passing I saw the band only a handful of times. Jerry Garcia a was huge part of the Grateful Dead and can't be replaced. But the Dead culture lives on, perhaps it's part of our DNA to celebrate time gone past. You can't forget Pigpen, Keith, and Brent...

Just saw them this past weekend, it was my first Dead show and it was by far the best concert I’ve ever seen. The sphere is seriously no joke. However, some of the incredible Deadheads around me told me that there are hidden Jerry’s in all the visuals, and at least for me everything about this show is a tribute for Jerry and his legacy. No need to AI/Hologram him, he lives in the music, his symbolism is ingrained in every scene. Again I can only speak for me but I felt his energy the whole concert.

I have no idea why they didn't memorialize Jerry, but my gut says that it was the right thing. The memorial was the Fare Thee Well concerts. Nobody in the Dead culture needs a memorial to him, we know what he was and he's in our hearts. The true memorial to Jerry is in the music. Thats what he created in part, inspired otherwise, wrote, visualized and revisualized over and over, show after show. That it still exists as a living thing and is still being revisualized show after show is his true legacy and memorial. In my opinion Dead and Company with Mayer stepping in and adding to it are as close to his spirit as things might have evolved and may have been if was still here. They certainly have creditably, innovative and respectfully continued to reimagine the Dead legacy. Another point is that the Dead was never just Jerry and he never, I'm sure, saw it that way. There were so many people who were either part of the band, passed through or passed away who made major contributions that guided Jerry and the other members through thematic and stylistic evolutions. The thing's too big, and thankfully, still living to try to pigeonhole to one individual. That said, after Jerry bounced the spotlight from his Strat onto my face following me as a bit as I moved, I can say, and I know it’s an irationality that he was a minor deity. For sure!

I like how you said the graphics won you over on the music. I think for Deadheads, we always “saw” and “felt” the music. Acid and mushrooms definitely aided that back in the day, but even without that, the memories and sounds from shows became our own private movies that touched our hearts all the years we were on the bus. I went to all 3 shows the weekend of June 6-8 & it blew my mind! They played everything I wanted, plus “looks like rain” which has been my favorite song since I was 15! It felt so magical. 2 weeks later and I’m still feeling a certain way. Looking to go back in August. If you can go, fan or not, do it! And Mayer played the best “Sugaree” I’ve heard so far from dead & company. I can’t even put into words how amazing the sound & visuals are. And yeah it would have been cool to have a Jerry playing for a song or something. I give my experience 11/10

Dead and Company was formed in 2015, which is 20 years after Jerry died. Dead and Co has always been what the current lineup is minus original drummer Bill Kreutzmann, who left lest year.

This was cool to hear. I guess it popped up as a video to watch as I watch and listen to so many dead shows. I toured with the Dead off and on from 1985 till just before Jerry’s death. I saw them a few nights earlier and was devastated with Jerry’s death. I’ve listened and paid attention from afar to the Dead and Co deal and just haven’t had the ability to get involved again. I didn’t even know about this recent revival and shows at the sphere. I won’t make any of these as it’s not possible but thanks to this review I’m going to keep an eye out and see if they decide to play another stint in the upcoming months. If so, I’m in and will give me that opportunity to get my wife involved(non dead head) and get a chance to get back to Vegas and experience the Sphere

I was a metal head myself. Knew they were good musicians, but I went to trip, smoke, and check out the scene. That was Fall 88' in Miami. Went on tour from 89'-91', and whenever I could, until Vermont 95'. This reviewer needed to take the acid test, especially first show, years ago. Trip balls, don't get drunk. You'd have been a fan, especially of the music. Once you get the music, it's extraordinary! Graphics cool. Music is better. YOU NEEDED THE LSD! Thanks for the review, brother!👍💯✌️

People need to appreciate the renditions and love all of the cover bands and tribute bands bring. I love gd every era, but i like Dead and Co's appoach for different reasons. I love Oteil's passion and voice on Jerry songs, Jeff may be my fav keyboard player of all eras and i love Keith and Brent, John does his own thing and i think while a bit annoying in sime songs his voice is actually perfect for some Jerry tunes. Bobby's voice has changed, but not in a bad way

Touch of grey did not come out years after Jerry passed, they were actually playing that song at shows at least 5 years before it came out in 1987 on the album in the dark, and then Jerry died in 1995

I feel like I need to respond to your statement that all of the Dead's songs kinda sound the same. I've been going to shows since 1973 and started out with heavy rock (Humble Pie, Allman Bros, Mountain, Johnny Winter, etc.). I've seen just about everyone that's not in the 27 Club . I was never a dedicated Deadhead insofar as I've always gone to see many other artists, but I've seen the Dead (and the Stones) many, many times. The reason people (including me) saw multiple shows of every Dead tour is because of the wide variety of genres of music they draw on and how diverse their sound and repertoire is as a result. The fact is, I can't name a single band whose sound is more diverse than the Dead. Even the song list from this show that you just saw is widely diverse. Perhaps like me, the trippy sound and meandering guitar didn't resonate for you like the punch of hard driving rock... but being a product of the '80s rather than the '70s, unlike me, you didn't see enough Dead shows and listen to enough songs to really begin to hear and appreciate the nuanced, intricate and complex sound that was the Grateful Dead. The Stones are the greatest rock and roll band ever, but theGrateful Dead were by far, a much more skilled and accomplished group of musicians whose sound remains unrivaled to this day.

One only need listen to a show from 1972 to hear the variety of sound and styles--from country, blues, folk and funk to complete abstract psychedelic madness to stomping rock and roll to sweet emotional ballads.

Only three reasons to go to LV for me. Experiences like the Sphere. Went to U2, Phish and haver a three night stand for D&C. No where in the world can you sample almost all of the great cuisines as you can in LV. And though it's not my thing, I guess if you like to shop, again almost all the shopping you could imagine. So for me it's the food and the Sphere (ok yea I did go to the F1 race).

I was there Opening night and night 2. Was absolutely incredible experience. You are a fool not to get out there for it. No video review will give it true justice. Been a fan for a long time at 58 YO. I personally don’t understand the diehard Jerry fans that refuse to go. I have some great friends that way and I respect them but this lineup is keeping some great music and a scene going. True they are making lots of money but they should. Mayer is so dialed in to blues and jams he is very talented. Even with slow Bob dropping the tempo a bit it’s still a great experience.

Ugh, I saw U2 and was blown away. Looked into going back out for the Dead, but a Hawaii trip in June makes it nearly impossible. Now I'm pissed that I'm going to miss it. Oh well, I hope they circle back there.

As a pretty big Dead fan in the 80s (although not a Dead head) it really hasn't, isn't and won't be the Grateful Dead *without* Garcia. I know that will ruffle some feathers, but that's how it feels. That big group mind thing is absent. I don't pretend to know why, but it is. It's not the same thing it once was. But then I suspect that was probably gone by 1993 or so, when it became the *HUGE* nightmare that had Phil and the others writing letters to the audience imploring them to cease with the insanity, all the arrests, people getting killed when that roof collapsed, etc, etc. It's really sad, as that was truly unique, something that was almost never found anywhere else, and had manifested back in the Acid Tests.

So the reasoning that Jerry isn’t put on the screen in overload is because a lot of old heads would have seen as disrespectful. I would feel that way. By the way great review. I like that you were somewhat unfamiliar. They turned the place into venues like Red Rocks and Cornell. You get it. The iconic shows. Congrats that you got it. This would have been a 10. I’m in Georgia. Struggle to walk but wife and I are considering making it happen. Somehow someway. I’ve seen a lot from friends and want to go. I haven’t worked since 2017 and she’s a teacher and though we used to come to the Venetian when I was successfully running a business world wide putting a kids through college etc we have to be fiscally responsible. We had backstage for their 50 years anniversary which was 3 nights in Chicago and had people offer us $50k for the 2 tix X 3 nights plus room and we turned them down. The band meant that much more but more than 30 procedures on my back and mostly living in a bed so it’s hard to get out but we wanna try. We are 4everGrateful either way. Take care brother. ⚡️⚡️🌹

I hate that my wife has turned into a caretaker. We still may try. It’s hard when you travel somewhere and have to stay in a bed And miss the shows you have flown across the country to see. It crushes me seeing her be a caretaker to me. We still may try. And thank you again for posting this. It blows me away. The motorcycle reminds me of the Grateful Dead Movie from 1974 with the cartoon during Beat it on down the line and The Wheel. Something we used to trip to while in our senior year of high school and then college. It will have to be a last second call.

Jerry’s playing is something that was so different and spontaneous that it wouldn’t feel right to use ai. Mayer does a good Jerry tribute and they played a lot of songs tbh at were written by him to also pay homage.

I CAN'T WAIT! I was born the same year as the grateful dead, 1965. Discovered them as a 12-13yr old in 77-78 while learning to play guitar, saw my first of 70+ shows in 1980 -95, seen most every version of post Jerry dead when it was convenient. They were all good enough, not exactly the same but good enough.. I've been seeing clips of the sphere show and they look and sound like phenomenal shows! Was really wanting to go to get out there but hadn't made any plans to do so. Yesterday my wife dropped it on me, she booked plane tix, 4 nights at Treasure Island, and tix for Saturday Sat 6/1 w/o telling me and were leaving next Thursday night! I am jacked for it, somehow, like the old days.. now i need to find tix fpr friday and i need to know where the shakedown scene will be so i can run itno that fun-gi for the first time in... Idk.. a decade?? Hope to see you there brothers and sisters! Enjoyed your review by the way. Loved to hear your perspective.

You bring up a good point regarding Jerry being intertwined in the experience. Personally a great idea however and Jerry said this many times when they’re done with it they’re done so they allowed tapers to tape free of charge but I agree with you this is something totally different and would have been mind blowing Jerry and John riffing off each other as Jerry always liked playing with new folks. Howdy, I started with punk and metal also. I started seeing the Dead in 87. I went through a period when I essentially rejected metal. Now, I love it again and find it to be some of the most creative music being made today. I am a proud Metal loving Dead freak.

. there have been MANY musical variations after Jerry died. The Other Ones in 1998 was the first post Jerry band which were the remaining members together. (they also had their own bands they each put together Bob Weir & Wolf Bros.,Billy & the Kids, BK3, 7 Walkers (with Papa Mali), Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band, Ratdog,) the members then toured as The Dead, then Further, they reformed solo bands , Rhythm Devils, Then Fare Thee Well celebrating 50 years with all original members , THEN Dead and Co as the last iteration... Touch of Grey was mid 80s and Jerry died in 1995 . The music lives on forever . the Grateful Dead allowing their fans to record their shows is the greatest gift they could have ever given the world so that their legacy is far greater than all others. why they have songs the music never stops, it was all about the music and movie with the same title. they have never played the same show twice in almost 60 years. This is why and what makes these guys the greatest gift of music IMO. I

Man did you hit the nail on the head... Although I so hope there is something left of an entertaining traveling group. As much as I want Bobby and the boys to retire and enjoy their time in the limelight. I missed r St Louis show of (dead & company) this past year due to a terrible accident I was in and it affects me to this day. I think of it almost daily. Missing the show that is. I was so pumped and had been for many months. Anyway enough of my rambling, I just want to be able to enjoy whatever iteration that might pop up , that I could afford, in person just once! I so feel like I missed out I've been a dead head & super fan for many years and never got to see them together/live in any iteration

Was at that show; drove down from Kingston ON (was my 6th show; at the time they were playing smaller arenas like Syracuse, Albany, Cornell, and Buffalo) in a VW camper borrowed from a friend. Great show, was a blast down in the open GA floor area. We, for whatever reason, stopped at a hotel lodge well after the show. The two drummers (Bill and Mikey) were in the bar (Placid is a small town!) and we had a moment talking with them. Grabbed some firewood from the lodge on our way out, camped in the woods, swam in a freezing river in the morning and blurry eyed had a great day checking out the ski jumps etc. 40 years ago, but one on my fond memories from University days. The Sphere show would be amazing in a different way, but would never recapture the small fringe atmosphere of that Lake Placid show.

I mean, not just Jerry. But Pigpen, Keith, Brent, and Vince too. Everyone never includes all the keyboard players who have died. The band was not just Jerry. Speaking of that, I think maybe they are just trying to keep the music playing and keep moving forward. Not living in the past. But what do I know? Just my thoughts. Sorry if that came off dickish. I just think it would be kind of cheesy/too obvious or in peoples faces to plaster Jerry all over the place. He's there. He is definitely a part of the experience in some other worldly way we don't fully understand. His presence will never leave as long as the music never stops

Seen U2 at the Sphere several times. Even seats on the 4th level, the seats are decent compared to having bad seats at an arena show because of the shape of the arena. Also, being on the floor is amazing. Even though you don't see the entire screen, the effects from the graphics are intense.

250 ? That’s two weeks of groceries for me and my old lady, back when Jerry was around 27.50 was not going to put much of a dent in my grocery bill for one week. Seems like yet another money grift, my friend saw the stones in Vegas recently, 900 a ticket. Nostalgia is a heck of a racket. I’m in SoCal but don’t think I’m going to Vegas. To many fellas and lovely ladies for me. I did catch the dead at the Aladdin in 81. That was blast. The sphere looks pretty amazing.

Saw the GD probably 50 times (72-93) and D&Co six or seven and also the Friday night in the Chicago of the farewell show 2015 - kicking off with Box of Rain which blew everyone away. Unforgettable. Joe thanks for your post. To describe the Dead in words is ultimately futile,but I will try. They are an entity that until witnessed live the magnitude of their impact cannot be understood. So one show is required and this why most fans have seen multiple if not double or triple digit numbers of shows. With Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead became the most compelling band ever to see and the numbers back this up. I've personally seen the Grateful Dead over 30 times since 1983 and this pales to many who have seen the band 100, 200 times and more. The Grateful Dead is a consciousness more than they are a band. Enjoy!!

Jerry Garcia WAS well-represented at these shows, but through the music that he wrote and performed. The Dead have never been a nostalgia act, but instead about being in the now. Their improvisational nature of the music reinforces the feeling of playing in the moment and never repeating the same jam. Jerry was there alright, but in spirit if not in the visuals.

Some of the 19:15 added shows in August fall in the “Days Between” - Jerry’s birthday, Aug. 1, and the day he died, Aug. 9. I would expect Jerry tributes in those shows.

There is no smoking once you enter, and no re-entry. There are sneaky ways around this, but I'm just saying. 3rd level is the spot. I was section 308, and vertically it is the center of the screen, though a little to the left of center (tickets were the cheapest available on stub hub). Stage was a bit far, but I could tell who was who. John is playing perfectly to Jerry's style
