You mentioned 20 lands in that game, so assuming that's true, the odds of the land-only draw given a 2-land starting hand are (18/53)*(17/52)*...*(12/47).= ~.02%, so you're likely to see this again if you just play another 5000 games 🙃

It’s kind of hard to not see that it is. I wish it was truly randomized but it’s not, especially when matchmaking. The first time I made a mill deck I faced two decks with 80 cards and the 3rd deck had 250 cards. Never seen that from previous games one single time.
@ajaxender128 ай бұрын
I believe it tries to emulate a 'lazy' riffle shuffle. To do this, it sorts the list in various ways; sometimes mana value, sometimes colors, I think sometimes alphabetized or other ways. Then it separates that list into clumps of cards that *don't get shuffled*, which is the big problem, although I do believe there is a little weaving of the clumps sometimes (particularly with lands). This is why if you see one card in a game, you'll almost always see another copy of it - even if it's a 2 of. It's why you might only have a few expensive cards but you'll still regularly get hands with all of them at once. It's why if you keep a 2-lander, you're gonna get screwed, and if you keep a 4-lander, you'll often get flooded. It means filtering/card selection and shuffle effects are even more important than in paper (or B03, possibly).

If you do a Slickshot Showoff deck again you should try adding highway robbery. The extra plot card goes hard with a plotted showoff and it lets you sacrifice a land or pitch a land if you’re flooding out.
@alaingamache39088 ай бұрын
I think if you look at the VOD (OutLaws! Let's Go), at the beginning he shows what that deck had become (basically a red combo deck). I will look into it for sure. Question is, what do you cut?
@Calophon8 ай бұрын
@@alaingamache3908 I would cut the ancestral anger or the Godrick. The deck has plenty of 1 mana pumps, and plotting highway robbery just lets you pop off much harder the turn you do play slickshot show off. Cutting Godrick is also an option, I don’t think we really saw him in gameplay and he seems like an unnecessary top end if the payoff is a stormy pump turn.

It's interesting to hear a professed Red Aggro hater say, "I'm going to take this deck all the way to Mythic!" I think it's indicative of how much of a grind this game is. The reason why Mono-Red is so popular is because it's an easy way to level up. In nearly all cases the game is over in 3-5 minutes. When your grinding that's pretty appealing. I wish they'd come up with a way to make the game more appealing to players who want to choose more diverse options instead of just win, win, win. Must win! ~ Thanks CGB for the great content!
@WitnessedOne8 ай бұрын
Not only that, but aggro decks are consistently winning in that time frame as well, meanwhile when you play a control deck, you can legit still lose after 10+ minutes to bad draws even if you were winning in the beginning, sometimes you just never stabilize and end up losing after playing a7+min match
@tigerpunch34028 ай бұрын

This is the kind of thing that made me stop playing Arena altogether after the LOTR set. Complete with the 8 straight lands off the top. I'm born in 1984, played some Magic as a teen, even got to Grand Prix Lisboa 1998. I was Blue White from the start (before "Azorius" was ever a thing). I had a great time learning the game and learning statistics alongside it, but then real life caught up to me I was in University, I couldn't afford spending time with the game. After a few years I occasionally got back into the game, first or MTGO, then Arena. A big part of this was the Innistrad sets, the first Innistrad set was awesome not only on cards and mechanics but also the lore and all the work WotC did showing off the different locales on the Plane, what a dream time that was. More "recently" I got back to Magic with Arena after the longest of hiatus, because of Midnight Hunt. I was greeted to a wondrous new world with Arena. Things looked great, nice set, awesome new client with graphics up the wazoo, ease of use, etc etc. Going back to limited was a blast, even when I was poor I thought it the best way to play the game, levelled field and all. Then of course you get to accrue a collection of cards and craft the ones you lack and you get into Standard. Bo1 is the easiest to get into, so sure. But then mono-red is your day to day and then they cancelled the rotation and it got super downhill from there. I stopped having fun with Magic. There's no space for deckbuilding, it's as cutthroat and as fast as you can imagine. Either you are onboard with that or you are way over the top smart the likes of CGB here to survive. I'm not that smart, I'm slightly above average if I'm feeling confident, so there is no space for me here when I'm trying to explore different ways to play Magic. CGB, I appreciate your work very much, I was a Patron for months, I forget how many, but I'm not sure I can go back to Magic anytime soon. Maybe call me when there's an actual rotation, but I'm so traumatized by mono-red I can only take Magic on YT these days. My all time favourite moment in Magic is the Pro Tour Avacyn Restored - that Miracle deck sure was something original and exciting. Definitively not turn 1 Kumano....

I was playing mono blue artifact/aggro with 20 lands, kept a two land hand, and didn't see another land until i had 38 cards left in the deck. I didn't even draw the land. I got milled by restless reef and the bottom two of the four cards milled were lands. Then i drew another non-land card and it was over.

Sometimes I will have a opponent play something like duress or bats and INSTANTLY pick, even a good player takes a couple seconds to look at board state to decide. Or an opponent I played ranked who had a 240 card deck completely on curve vampire tribal with mana fixing for all their crazy huge spells they drew after a few turns. I could go 30 cards deep into my 60 card deck looking for 1 of 4 of a card
