Cracking The Cryptic

Cracking The Cryptic

Күн бұрын

Here's where you can play The Escherian Stairwell by Chris Savvides: app.crackingthecryptic.com/99...
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits along an arrow must sum to the circled cell. In the two 'staircases' (denoted by dashed squares) each digit is followed by a larger digit in a clockwise direction, unless the digit is a 9, which is always followed by a 1.

I'll admit I haven't watched this channel for the last couple of weeks. I'm glad I popped in for this one. My 41 minute solve won't break any records, but I'm happy with it. I usually end up at about an hour with these puzzles in sub half hour videos, if I can solve them at all.

The directions in the version I clicked on say that "each digit is proceeded by a larger number" which I read as "each digit is preceded by a larger number", which made the rules for the 9-1 relationship quite impossible. I probably spend 5 minutes trying to puzzle it out before taking a look at the video, where the rules say (much more reasonably, I think) that "each digit is followed by a larger number". It's quite odd, at least in America, to see "proceeded" used in this fashion. Might I suggest taking pity on those of us who aren't so linguistically savvy and changing it back to "followed"? Once I got past that, it was quite fun!

I found the wording of the rules confusing, and initially tried to have the staircases going the wrong way, but it broke fairly quickly so I figured I must have misread them. _Edit_ - having just read some other comments, it looks like the rules have been amended to make them clearer, that explains why!

16:57, not a great time, but interestingly had a *very* different solve path. I started by placing the 9 and 1-5 in the central box, which Mark didn't even get to until nearly the end of the puzzle. Probably more efficient to do it Mark's way, but I didn't even look at the easy numbers around the outer staircase until I had the inner one mostly figured out.

What a lovely idea. I adore Escher's work so brilliantly illustrating the mobius strip. However the ruleset provided with Sven's sudoku pad rather spoiled my experience of it. "each digit is proceded by a larger digit in a clockwise direction" is such a weird way of putting it. To me it was disambiguously the opposite of what was meant, although as I type this I realise that it is not wrong. I read proceed as precede so it was my fault. However the wording on Mark's solution page was quite clear, so when I read that I scrapped my impossible interpretation and restarted.

Please anyone help me out here, it seems mark and all of you are assuming that if there is a 1 then there must be a 9 before it, but that is not how i understand the rules. Only if there is a 9 it has to be followed by 1. But if there is a 1 there can be say an 8 or 7 before it. As it doesnt have to be consecutive. Im only oartly into marks solve but it seems all his deductions so far are based on this false premise. For rxample at 8:27 he assumes 9 must be in one of two cells in row two so that he can then transition into a 1 but that's not the rule. What am I missing?
@raminafchar4412
@raminafchar4412 29 күн бұрын
Yes, same here with me. I learned to read the rules carefully. So I did not "reverse" the rule "a 9 is followed by a 1" to "a 9 is before a 1". Took me a while to came to a lot of 89 and a few 789 pairs. At the end I had a a final 78 pair that I could only resolve by putting a 9 before the 1. Wish that that would have been a bit clearer by the rules...
@nikolausseydel1728
@nikolausseydel1728 29 күн бұрын
Well, it follows from the rules: Any digit has to be followed by a larger one, except for 9, which is always followed by 1. If you have an 8 in a cell, the next cell must be 9 (otherwise it breaks the rule), and the one after the 9 must be a 1 (also according to the rules). What follows is: Any 1 must be preceeded by a 9, that's indeed not part of the rules, but you can deduce it from the rules!
@stevieinselby
@stevieinselby 29 күн бұрын
Every digit going up the staircase must be higher than the previous digit, except in the case where 9 is followed by 1. That means that no other digit can reset back to 1, the only option to follow an 8 is to increase to a 9.

I'm very confused you read "proceeded" 2x (around 3:25) when the text on the screen says "followed" --- and "proceeded" is what's currently written on the sudokupad instructions too. Proceeded is the opposite of followed!! [I started the solve by looking at the same arrow, but immediately concluding R2C7 necessarily was a 1 (as 2-3-4 breaks over the fourth digit) but that was wrong...]
@benwhite5734
@benwhite5734 Ай бұрын
"Proceed" is not a transitive verb; it's strictly intransitive in both British and American English. Therefore "proceeded by" in the rules as currently published is nonsensical. It should either be "succeeded by" or "followed by" (as it is in the video).

@@benwhite5734 "None of them list it as a transitive verb" Well, that's not what I asked you. Or, to be more precise, this doesn't answer my question. The conditions "verb not listed as transitive" and "verb listed as strictly intransitive" are not the same. The main part of my question, and of your comment, is the word "strictly". Is there such a thing as a "strictly intransitive verb"? And if there is, certainly "proceed" should NOT be STRICTLY intransitive. Because English speaking people say phrases like "you may proceed with ...". I can agree the word is NOT usually used with numbers. Only God knows why, because "preced" is used with numbers and it is the opposite/dual of "proceed", isn't it? And that's so weird, because the thing happens with "preceder" and "proceder" in Portuguese. We may say "1 precede 2", but we don't say "2 procede 1", we say "2 sucede 1". Man, I need a linguistics expert now. Hahahahaha. Why this happens?
