These colors remind me of the colors that I used in decorating my first apartment after leaving home in the 70’s . I had a room divider made of hanging wooden beads in these colors and orange shag carpet. It was to die for. 😂 My sofa, the only seating in the living room was a plaid sofa with the same colors. It was wonderful. The walls in my kitchenette were painted a deep orange and I had laminated menus from local restaurants as decoration’s instead of pictures. I even used macrame hangers for my plants which were everywhere. I thought I was so hip. 😂 Thanks so much for bringing back those happy memories.

Very beautiful piece the struggles appeared to be worth it from where I sit! :) I am actually inspired by this because i have some beautifully spalted burch but with punky spots which feel like such a waste, perhaps an approach something like this (resin heavy) would help stabilize it (I really don't want to actually do the cactus juice stabilization :p). Nicely done! :)

Really really beautiful piece! Much more stunning than I was imagening as I watched the progression. I had a few thoughts. Im sure you noticed endgrain really soaks up the resin which results in so much color bleeding into the wood. While this is still pretty in its own right it may not have been what you were going for. I do resin/wood turning as well. I feel that giving the endgrain slabs a coat or two of sanding sealer would have likely helped this project on a few parts. First it would have reduced the amount of resin soaking into the grain by closing up those pores. The second effect I suspect would have been less chance for that wood to release undesirable air into the resin during the curing process. Id also have considered a way to pour in the resin with the project at an angle so it could fill and allow the buoyancy of the bubbles to be pulled to the surface with out the flat slabs getting in the way. Given a little time then straighten and top off or incorporate an angled sitting mold in the pressure pot? Just a few of my own initial impressions hope they translated from my head to written form and made sense. Absolutely loved this project and will have to give my own 'spin' on it sometime. I can appreciate the number of challenges it would have presented. Great job and much respect friend. Happy Turning and God bless you!

Not that bad in the end. I like the interrupted but still consistent grain direction. Maybe you should have poured with the piece oriented horizontally to avoid the bubbles.

Your tools need to be very sharp turning resin like this on a lathe by hand. You figured that out for sure, lol.

The end result was lovely, I have found that polyester resin does have the problem of chipping when turned on the lathe. Using epoxy resin can often eliminate this problem, this at least is my own experience having started turning a vase that ended up as an egg cup before I resolved the chipping with polyester!

Thanks for your comment, it's already epoxy resin that I'm using in this video😉as I explain. The problem lies elsewhere.

Beautiful work! I also like how you speed up the video after initially showing an operation at regular speed. Too many videos show the same thing for way too long.

If you do something like this again, I would highly suggest that you stabilise the birch. You already have the pressure chamber that can most likely also be used as a vacuum chamber with a simple thick plexiglass lid (you could use other material, but it’s nice to see what is happening to your project) and Vevor sells (and several other sellers) a relatively good pretty heavy duty vacuum pump set pretty cheap. I use ‘cactus juice’ which you place your materials in a tub in the vacuum chamber, so the material is submerged in cactus juice, and you apply a vacuum until there are no more bubbles coming out, then you slowly release the vacuum and the juice impregnates the material (this may take a few days up to a week, depending on the porosity of the material). Finally, you get the material up to 86’c for a bit to harden the material, and Roberta’s your auntie, nice and hard, about the same consistency as the hardened resin you will eventually use.

Andrée Thanks for this good suggestion, I will make a video to explain the wood stabilization process. here in this video it is not the bubbles that are the problem but the difference in density between the materials😉

@@bawbreizhartwood yes. Birch is a gorgeous wood, but very soft.

@bawbreizhartwood , instead of a ring pattern, have you ever tried spiral cutting a piece or wood and then stretching it out so you get a resin/wood spiral all the way down? I think you would have to steam it and then stretch and let it dry, so it may take a while. If you do try, it may be a good idea to stretch multiple in case they crack when drying. This one looks amazing!
