If you plant Merrigold flowers around the inside of the veg beds it will help keep out bugs from the plants. There is something in the Merrigold flowers that the bugs don’t like the smell of. And so they will stay away from that area! I would do the 4 corners and then a few around the sides!

I always use lavender to make fragrance bags - putting the flowers in old socks or stockings or reusable tea bags, and then putting them with the fresh bedsheets or my clothes. You can also mix with rose petals, camomile flowers, mint, yarrow, vervain, what ever dried plants smell good to you. Also, don’t listen to people criticising your content. It’s wonderful, and you are so real and authentic! That’s why we all are here 🤗 Haters gonna hate whatever you do.

Tomatoes don't like to be wet and rained on, and they like direct sun or just lots of light. Also do not harvest the potatoes now!! Potatoes are harvested when the leaves die off, so much later in the year! Rosemary, sage, thyme etc are mediterranean herbs, meaning they prefer dry soil, so you're right in that this isn't the best place for them. Put them in clay pots, as they are porous and allow the soil to dry out faster. I put them in big pots right away because I didn't want to have to repot them, but you can do it however you like. Just maybe don't take them inside, as they need lots and lots of light, and they're not meant to be inside for extended periods of time. Also: you can propagate these herbs pretty easily through cuttings rooted in water. I've even done it accidentally by adding rosemary to a bouquet. Letting you know just in case you would like to have backup plants (as they sometimes die in winter because they're not exactly used to freezing temperatures. Wrapping them in thin, white fleece can help there) or give some to your neighbours. Direct sowing works well with pumpkins, squash, zucchini, cucumbers (those need a trellis), as well as corn, beetroot, radishes, swedes and other things in the brassicaceae family. You can increase germination rate by soaking the seeds in water for 24 hours beforehand Garlic, like onions, is harvested late in the year when the leaves die off, similar to potatoes. If you're interested in something that both has beautiful flowers as well as it is edible, google jerusalem artichokes. they have a tuberous root system from which they sprout, and the tubers can be eaten like other root vegetables. Let some of the tubers sit in the beds or pots for next year to sprout from. But careful, they take over very easily, so if you want them to be in the ground, you'll need to install a root barrier fairly deep down. But luckily you can also keep them in pots perfectly fine. I'm sure they'd make lovely flower arrangements too for your vases. you can also try sunflowers, those are great for wildlife with their large flowers and eventual seeds. plus you can eat those seeds as well. there's lots of different varieties too, even with different colours apart from the basic yellow

I'd say those beets were sown over a year ago. Beets are biennial meaning that they will flower in their second year of growth (you can leave them to do this so you can collect seed for future years sowing). You would want to he sowing and harvesting in the same year for eating as they can go woody once they start to bolt (set seed). You could absolutely sow more beets, cabbage (you would be sowing autumn varieties now), pakchoi, kohlrabi, broccoli, fennel, etc. Great to see you out in the garden again!

You can use the lavender to make some "mothballs", not sure if they actually help or it's just a myth ;) my grandma always made them, simply wrap the lavender up in a piece of cloth, some old tights or socks and tie it up so nothing falls out, then put it in your closet and it will help prevent your clothes from smelling dusty and old!

I have feral neighborhood cats that like to dig in my garden and I use a product called “repels all” that is made with black pepper oil that actually does a pretty good job keeping them away. Just make sure you try to keep it off your skin and wash your hands after because if you have some on your hands and rub your eye it will burn. It won’t hurt the cats; they have much better noses than us so they’ll smell it from afar and stay away. As for what is easy to direct sow: squashes (including bush varieties like courgette and yellow crookneck), cucumbers, melons, radishes, bok choy, mustards, Swiss chard, sunflowers, and zinnias. Just make sure you have enough frost-free days left to reach maturity for frost-tender plants like squash, cucumbers, melons, and cutting flowers. But I think growing things like cucumbers and squashes from seed is very easy and very rewarding because they come up quickly and usually do really well; way better than starts you buy at a garden center or nursery.

You've really been one of the people inspiring me to keep up with my garden even when I'm not feeling like going outside. For future reference, you want to wait to harvest potatoes until the tops start to die back, after they've flowered. This makes them as big and starchy as possible for storage. Of course there's also no problem with harvesting them a little earlier, in which case you'll get new potatoes! You might think about sheet mulching between your beds. And sheet mulching is what you do with no-dig. It's a little tough in a raised bed that's already very full, though. Broccoli is easy, just research what you'll do about bugs because they love broccoli. I use an organic pesticide with neem oil and other essential oils that works really well. And with any summer or winter squash in a cool, humid area, make sure you have an anti-fungal solution on hand, as you'll almost certainly need to spray for that (there are plenty of organic ones... a hydrogen peroxide solution works well if used periodically, and is super safe). Pumpkins would be great to plant right now (kabocha! jack-o-lanterns! sugar pie!), along with kale, which is a great winter veg. Chard is also super easy, and a perennial. If you have a late summer bell peppers could work, and they're perennials so even if they don't fruit this year so much you'll get peppers in the years to come.

Can I recommend planting your herbs still in the plastic pot they come in? That way you’re a) not wasting the pot and b) their roots can’t spread too far so they don’t end up getting enormous! I’ve done this with my herb bed and they’ve still grown to over a foot so if doesn’t restrict them too much ☺️

Lovely video ❤️ Easy vegetables I recomend: peas, courgette and pumpkin. You can also try to grow sunflowers. And my last tip is to write down where all the vegetables are now, because you should not plant the same vegetables in the same bed every year (diferent flowers need diferent nutrients). 🌱❤️

Yes, tomatoes need a lot of sun (at least 4-5 hrs/day) and, unless they're a wild variety/bush tomatoes, they also need protection from wind and rain, otherwise they'll go bad (enough space between the plants is also very important)!

I am all for multiple beds for flowers! There are special seed mixes for bees and butterflies, and I am guessing those flowers would also look amazing when you cut them in the house! As a Dutchie I would also recommend you plant tulip bulbs in the fall (before the ground starts freezing at night). You can leave them in the ground forever and plant seeds over them in summer, so every year when the tulips come above the ground, you know that spring has sprung haha

You seem to have raised beds similar to mine. It is good to watch them during the day and just see how much sun/shade they seem to get. Some vegetables don’t seem to mind how much sun they get (at least in my garden), such as radishes, runner beans, spinach, some flowers… Just make sure the sun loving ones such as tomatoes have as much sun as possible. This year I also mowed the grass really short between my beds and put down weed barrier and then covered the weed barrier in wood mulch. I also did this around the perimeter of the garden. No more maintenance between the rows and it always looks good, easy to walk on too!

You can test dig a potato plant once the foliage dies back- you’ll get an idea of the size of the potato. They respond well to “hilling” up and will give you more tubers. Spring peas and new ( small) potatoes are yummy! Yes, tomatoes are a hot sunny weather loving plant. You can pull off the tomato suckers ( the new growth in the crotch of another branch and the main stem), root the suckers and start new tomato’s. Maybe you can open up the hedge that’s blocking the sun a bit? Since this is your first garden, give yourself permission to experiment, know you’ll have some failures that you’ll learn from and have fun.

I'm sure you probably already know this but I wanted to say anyway that if those flowers have lilies on them, then clean the pollen off and be careful w the cats because they are very toxic to pets. Love this vlog and your gorgeous home!!

what a cozy video! loved it!🤍 with the lavender pieces, I’d put them in a little cloth bag and put it between your knitted stuff, especially those that have wool in them. it’s good against moths.

Home made potpourri with lavender, rose petals, etc, is a great natural way to help with those musty smelling clothes.

Cardboard with mulch to get rid of the weeds and protect the soil until hour ready to plant. Consider building a fence around the veg beds Pinterest has some attractive looking ideas for it. Also prob a good idea to kill of the grass around and between the veg beds (gravel or pavers) then the grass/weeds aren't competing with the veg for nutrients ect

In Pennsylvania we had a few nights in a row where the low got down to 40 F in the middle of June! The weather seems to be wonky all over

I simmer the lavender in some water on the stovetop ... it scents the house! I used to throw it into the fireplace to get some scent too

Zucchini is easy just need it to be planted in a small dip and water a lot. Water collects in the dip. Plant quite apart from each other as they get quite big.
