Since Froggy had a Chaos Emerald in them the whole time, there’s no doubt into my mind that the discussion of trust is that. Perhaps all of Froggy’s negative thoughts are amplified by the Chaos Emerald turning his thoughts into power. Maybe he’s scared of how Big will react to his new tail, eating his lucky charm compulsively against his will, or maybe even feelings of being taken for granted (which I’m pulling from lyrics in Lazy Days, Big’s theme), and that’s why he ran off so much. Pain can close you off, make you scared, cut off healthy connections out of guilt, doubt or small arguments feeling very powerful to you (which is valid). With how far Big goes to find and especially accommodate for Froggy, going out of his own comfort zone, not taking the “easy” way and treat his as an inconvenience, and most important of all, loves him just as much in spite of the tail and eating of his lucky charm; it makes a lot of sense that Froggy would learn to believe in his friend. Being stuck in Chaos 6, and Big facing such a powerful creature just to fish him out solidifies it for sure. And funnily enough, Chaos too is a very hurt being, turning negative energy into a way to get revenge on the world that took the Chao away from them. Sealing away Chaos is the “easy” way out, but it doesn’t solve the lingering feelings of anger and sadness (as Sonic himself puts it). Only by opening our hearts and pushing ourselves to do things we don’t want to do to help out those close to us can we all learn to heal and get better. And that is why Big’s campaign is integral to the story. It’s long, repetitive, maybe even a little boring, but I’d do that campaign a thousand times over if a friend would feel a little bit better from it.

A shame you haven’t mentioned Big’s appearances in the most recent games as in my opinion this is the most characterization we’ve seen from him since adventure. In frontiers, the Big we see is not the real Big. Instead, through learning how Cyberspace took from Sonic’s memory. He may not be there physically, but we learn that Sonic finds comfort in Big and was remade in the Cyberspace when the hedgehog found a safe space within the digital world. SONIC. This is like, the first time someone in the games really acknowledging Big, and knowing Sonic takes comfort in Big’s presence is so dang wholesome. Spoilers for Shadow Generations below. Alternatively, we do see Big in Shadow Generations, and this time, learn more about Big from optional dialogue you can get from him. I don’t have all the lines with me on hand, but I distinctly remember Big talking about Froggy and how he can make sure to always find him. Or how he’s the only sonic character to have been to see princess Elise from 06 and remember. Or hell, he explains how he got onto the Ark! By accidentally boarding a rocket. But all of this doesn’t compare when he talks about Gerald and Maria Robotnik. He doesn’t know them personally, but Big offers the both of them to fish with him sometime, even noticing that Gerald looked sad. This doesn’t make him a super genius (supposedly) but he’s capable of noticing body language and tries his best to help, possibly from his history with Froggy as he can’t speak.

I like to think that when Big was infiltrating Iron Gate He messed around with different gadgets trying to find froggy and accidentally pressed a button on a cloning machine, Causing a bunch of Big clones to be created. That would explain why he is showing up in multiple places at once, They’re all clones. The real Big is the one that cameos in most of the Sonic and Shadow stages along with the stages set on the Space Colony Ark and of course the cutscenes.

Big isn't incapable, he is simply trying to be retired after years of godly feats and adventures we will never hear the truth about. He doesn't want us or the Sonic team to know the power he holds. Only Froggy, he most trusted companion, truly understands.

There's a moment in Sonic Chronicles where he meets Sonic and the rest of the party trying to navigate terrain flooded with poison gas and helps them navigate it. I'm not even joking, Big displays actual knowledge and survival skills in that game. He also generally looks out for the party's well being. There's a point in the game where everyone is debating their options moving forward and stressing out about their situation and he just nonchalantly suggests getting ice cream because he recognizes that they 100% need to calm the fuck down. The game isn't considered canon but it was supposed to be before Ken Penders ruined it for everyone. That said this can be used for analysis of what his character is actually like due to the intent.

Some thoughts of how Big entered the Egg Carrier: Probably the defenses were distracted by Miles the Menace and Fast Boi trying to go in with the Tornado 2. It'd be believable he could get into the egg carrier without getting spotted. Big is just *the Guy.*

I know people joke about big being a god or being of great power, but in all seriousness I like how he's just this chill guy who inexplicably ends up in places of plot importance. He's so Zen regardless of the situation he's in, he doesn't panic when there's things he doesn't understand, he knows things will work out in some way. Even in his honestly heartbreaking story in the metal virus arc in IDW, he just keeps his friend safe for as long as he can before the virus claims them both.

@CAMiStH I was genuinely happy to see him in Shadow Generations! I was confused at first, but then I remembered "it's big the cat, being in places you don't expect is his thing." And all the dialogue he has is just so heartwarming, even when it's bittersweet like when he says he hopes to meet Gerald and Maria again and go fishing. Big, you're too sweet for this universe.

How I got introduced to big the cat before the video game, I was in college at New Hampshire, one of my good friends, and I at the time went to the Manchester mall while everybody was playing hooky at Hampton where I saw the character in a toy storeand thought man this guy is pretty cool and to this day he sits proudly in my nerd cave with other two variations that Jack specifically did and hopefully awaiting the Funko pop version of him

@ well technically I found out about sonic adventure through one of the old electronic game monthly magazines, but at the time because of financial situations I didn’t have a dream cast. I did hear about them, but I didn’t know 100% but what I did find the figureof our favorite purple cat, it was my freshman year of college. Like I say everybody was taking that day to go to Hampton Beach while me and a dear friend, went to the mall.

Fellow Big the Cat lover here! Love the video, and while I do agree that Big could be a god, I've always seen him as more of a parallel to Silver the Hedgehog. Or, I suppose Silver would be a parallel to Big. Where Silver represents time, Big represents space. Silver is able to traverse through time, and Big is able to traverse, and as you said, teleport, through space. He is able to alter his environment, alter how he is perceived, alter how he communicates with others, etc. I also have the more ridiculous theory of Big originally being from the Sol dimension and being abandoned in Sonic's dimension, and further more, Big even being related to Blaze in some way (I'm thinking long-lost siblings), but that's way out of the ball park when it comes to reality. Again, wonderful video, can't wait to see what else you make!!

The idea of Big being related to Blaze is interesting. He is, of course, purple, which is a colour typically associated with royalty and nobility. I would pick Big's story over Amys any day. Amy's levels are way longer, and you can beat Big's story in like 20 minutes even with watching the cutscenes. You can seriously beat each level in even less time than it takes to go through hub worlds if you know what you're doing.
