The most obscure Sonic character in the games is Crucules, Knuckles's younger brother who replaces him in the Brazilian release of Sonic Triple Trouble/Sonic & Tails 2. He looks and acts exactly like Knuckles, but the manual lets players know it's actually Crucules. that is if "characters" that only exist in weird manual translations count

Oh, I know of some super extreme obscure Sonic characters. Like Eric the Echidna - the first official echidna character created for the franchise a year before Knuckles debuted, appearing in the novel “Sonic the Hedgehog in the Fourth Dimension” by Virgin Publishing. You also got Tails’ wife from a corrupted timeline Carrie the Coypu, and the Organizers - a team of time-traveling cops who patrol the timeline in search of anomalies that shouldn’t exist like dragons and such.

It's definitely Rankles the Otter. According to the UK version of Sega Magazine, he is a green otter with "outsize sparkly ankles" who served as Knuckles' sidekick in Sonic & Knuckles. The magazine promised £1,000,000 to the first person to send them an in-game photograph of Rankles.

Surprised you didn't brought up Betty Butterfly from the Archie Comics, who unlike Charmy Friend who died, was only for a single panel in the early days of the comic and never brought up again beyond a flashback in Issue 57. Since it seems like IDW is part of the mainline continuity, and the scrapped band members are in said comics, maybe the band could be recannonized in the game-verse. This could be where Sonic met Vector for the first time, and maybe the band broke up sometime after Sonic 1 as heroics became Sonic’s top priority. I even think the kids from Schoolhouse could exist as Cream’s classmates, there could even be a one-off story where Sonic ends up being a substitute teacher for Cream’s class as a nod to said game.

Very good points and interesting ideas! I think it’d be great to see, but I doubt Sega will go down that route as they have a particular idea regarding canon that they don’t seem to want to contradict. Would be amazing to see though, here’s hoping!

This reminded me that there is an obscure character named Jian the Tiger. She, at least from what I can gather, is the only character that is a White Tiger in all of Sonic. I am probably wrong about this but it seems to check out. Her design is interesting due to her tail having a cybernetic tip with a hidden blade built into it.

All good, don’t worry! Completely get the frustration considering how common it is haha. Thank you, I’m slowly making my way through the 600 odd issues they did, main series and spin offs so it’s probably not gonna be out for a good long while yet haha. Yeah, people have made fun of Penders over it for years and I wanted to give a more fair look at it and what it tries to do. It’s not perfect as I said, but you’ve gotta respect him for tackling a subject matter like that just like Stan Lee and other comic writers did at the time.

Also, realistically, I'd say the most obscure Sonic characters would be the ones exclusive to this series of German Sonic audio dramas from the early 90s. I don't think the dramas themselves are even mentioned anywhere on Sonic Wiki Zone, normally I would make pages for them myself but I don't know enough German to write anything substantial on them.
