when i first played final fantasy 7 as a kid, i knew absolutely nothing about the game, everything was a surprise. i remember getting to the shinra building and seeing red 13 and thinking he looked so cool, but expected him to be a boss fight. then he joined the party and i was i just thought he was coolest character ever. then at cosmo canyon i thought he left the party, and spent hours in the area trying to find a way to get him back, i was mortified..then as i was leaving he rejoins the party i just thought yes! this is the coolest character ever! then aeris died and i cried.

He's one of the characters I use the most, and I love how he's really supportive, friendly and loyal to Cloud. His style is also really cool, I always love those animal-like characters in most RPG games, they are always so unique, and the way he attacks is also really awesome, actually his animation for magic and summons are also one of my faves. And I was really disappointed there wasn't more of him in Advent Children.

I didn't know there were FF VII books, so thanks for that info. Nanaki is easily my favourite character in the game; I remember wandering around Cosmo Canyon or just standing idle while doing other things to listen to the theme. I know it's cheesy for statues to cry, but finding Seto petrified knowing Nanaki's history still gets me to do the same. Great vid, thank you.

When you said Aeris wrong it was a mindfulness learning moment for me. My first thought was to be upset that I would have to continue listening to it, but then I let that thought go and realized how many words I'd mispronounced in my life because I only read them and never heard other people say them and felt like I should forgive the transgression. Also I never noticed the thing about the floor tiles and stuff not matching with the Aeris death scene so that was cool to learn also.

Nanaki was one of my favorite characters from FF VII. Partially because he is such a well-rounded character in game play (he's the quintessential red mage in the style of Frog from Chrono Trigger or Celes from FF VI) and also because his story is so amazing. I know this is borderline blasphemy, but Red XIII finding out about his father was actually a more tear-jerking scene for me than Aeris's death. I could relate to Nanaki on some levels. I was adopted, and the reason for that was that my birth mother couldn't take care of me because the man who knocked her up ran away before I was born. Having a cowardly birth father was something I could relate to. If I ever found out that my father was actually brave, it would be very emotional for me. Sometimes you wonder if you could ever do better than your birth parents.

When I were a kid, I had a huge soft spot for dogs (Still do), so of course I instantly started liking the dog-like character. Sadly I have to agree that he's incredibly underutilized in the game's story, but what he does add are some of the best in my opinion. I LOVE the party's first visitation to Cosmo Canyon. I love the introduction of Bugenhagen, who remains a great key support character until his death. And I Love the Seto's emotional backstory with the Gi tribe. And as you said, after he obtains his fathers weapon, he's easily one of the strongest attackers to use for a very long time.

I feel like Red doesn't get a whole lot of lines because he sort of became a stand-in for Nature as a concept. He's like the "druid" of the party who just wants the natural world to win, and that also is pretty much the entire plot overall which kind of makes his role almost redundant and accidentally relegates him to the sidelines because his whole role is taken up by every character as a result of the story.
