I live in Slovakia, eastern (central) Europe. Ever since I was little, my father would take me to the woods to ppick mushrooms. Mostly Boletus reticulatus, Leccinum albostipitatum, Suillus luteus and Cantharellus cibarius. Identifying and picking them has gradually become easy, guided by the experience of my father, and I have now ventured into the woods for mushrooming with my 4 year old daughter several times, even though she does not eat them yetr. Our regional cuisine regularly utilizes several types of mushrooms, and their taste is incomparably richer than anything you can buy in stores. I was surprised to find that there are not many contries in Europe (let alone USA) actually do this. I guess it is one of those skills that just disappear from the community once too many people stop practicing them. It makes me all the more grateful for the lessons from my dad.

great advice, Christian. waxpaper bags and tackle box-- check. i would add a little, stiff paintbrush for brushing dirt off those caps before bagging. i just started learning northern California mushrooms in earnest, and find the ebook version of your book very helpful in the field. keep up the great work and iNat curation.

Excellent video! After watching it, we went out and took a fungi walk. We spotted more mushrooms than I had expected we would in the winter time. Christian, my husband suggested you get a Moment macro lens for your phone to leave your hands free when photographing fungi.

Touching the most toxic ones can't do anything....totally get that. But I often read notes about mushroom "smells" or "odors" as being identifying factors. Once I smelled one that I believed to be toxic and that night I swear I had to most insanely vivid dreams - one after another. Is it possible that the spores, alone, could function in some sort of hallucinogenic way?

Not at all. Toxins are not found in spores. Some people identify magic mushrooms or toxic ones by tasting them and spitting them out. As long as you do not ingest it, nothing is going to happen to you.
