Also nice to see a vulnerable female character actually ask for help instead of just being the girl boss with zero flaws and full Mary Sue omnipotence. Nami loses big time, gets realistically emotional about it, has a full blown mental breakdown, and in her desperation she asks for help. That's what real strength is: falling down and checking your ego enough to get somebody to help get you back on your feet again. You have to lose to make victory meaningful. But that requires weakness, and fear, and failure. Nami is the only _actual_ "strong female character" we've seen in ages from Hollywood. The ones they usually try to push on us aren't even people really. Nami actually makes mistakes, fails, and learns from her failure. Netflix probably wanted her to singlehandedly go beat up Arlong. That would definitely be how Disney would do it. I'm glad Eiichiro Oda has creative control instead of a bunch of Hollywood hacks. All this to say, this is where I started loving Nami. I loved Luffy pretty much from his very first scene in episode 1. His optimism is so infectious. Nami was a compelling character from the start, she's very entertaining and the mystery about her was intriguing. I started liking her more after she learned some lessons interacting with Kaya. But this arc is where she really became a fully 3-dimensional character who I care about and want to see succeed, because this is where we see that she is not always going to have an easy time. The easy path is the wrong path. If only the rest of Hollywood understood that! For Zoro, he needed to get almost killed fighting a much better swordsman. For Usopp, he needed to find his courage after his crying pirate almost got his best friend killed. For Sanji, he needed to voice his gratitude out loud to Zeff and actually set out on his own path instead of sticking around forever out of guilt to repay his debt. And Luffy needed to come to the understanding that a captain has to make tough decisions if he's going to take care of his crew. There's times when he must get very serious. This is great storytelling. More of this, please.

@fakecubed I think the problem is the corporatization and thus mass manufacturing of stories. Flanderization of archetypes is inevitable once you view media as a product. You can argue American media companies are foolish for becoming convinced that this female archetype is the most marketable. Fine. But once it did, it was inevitable that every female lead would become this archetype. If you were around in the 90's and early 2000's, it was the overstressed girl who was quirky and/or clumsy that was the main lead of basicly every romantic comedy. If you want to look at Manga, how many 'Nice Guy Gamers' go to another world on a girl collecting quest? I also think they did tweak Nami to make her more palatable to non manga fans. Her greed is muted. She is much braver. I think she has better chemistry with Zoro and Usopp. So there is influence there.

Arlong saying she's the best in the east blue even Fishman or human just shows how good she is. Arlong is a Fishman elitist and believes no human could ever compete with a Fishman in ANY way. So for him to say that bluntly, just shows how skilled she is.

This is one aspect of the live action that I really hated. They didn't have time to flesh out the character of Garp well and ended up making him seem way different than he actually is. In the manga, u never get even the slightest impression that he is corrupt. it's actually the opposite since he is one of the few high ranking marines with a moral compass.
@zackg8019
@zackg8019 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm not sure where he got the Garp is corrupt thing from. I can't think of anything he's done that suggests he's corrupt, other than do what he could to protect Luffy when he probably would not have for some rando. I think people have an urge to simplify the marines, in both manga and anima and live action, no matter how much Oda seems to very clearly indicate that Marines doesn't equal bad guys, people really try to make it that simple.

The actor for arlong was really good and I love how they wrote his scenes. obviously his way of dealing with what people did to the fishmen is wrong but that makes him a compelling villain because you understand where he's coming from. Instead of using it to excuse his bad actions, that made his actions even worse because he knows what it's like to be on the bad site of oppression yet his answer is to fight oppression with oppression which is never a good idea. That makes him a great antagonist for Luffy too because luffy's all thing is being free and allowing people to be free so they're complete opposite. Btw if you've read the manga you know who jinbei is so hearing his name then immediately the angry reaction from arlong made me go "WOOOO!!!".

This arc is usually the point in the story that changes watchers/readers from liking this story to falling in love with it. The live action did a great job of encapsulating the essence of this arc, though I don't think it outdoes the manga/anime in its storytelling. And this is NOT a diss to the live action show: there just isn't any way that a live action show can perform the same type of storytelling in seven hours that an animated series with almost twice that amount of screentime could. If anything, the fact that they were able to condense that much content into that little amount of runtime and not only make it watchable but actually good, impactful, and emotional to the point that it still brings me to fucking tears is unbelievable, to the point that I half believe that sorcery of some kind was required. My point, though, is this: there is a REASON why One Piece is now almost 11 hundred chapters long. It's incredible length allows it to tell incredibly complex stories that a would be next to impossible with a shorter length. This arc doesn't start until chapter 69 (nice) of the manga, and were introduced to Nami in chapter 8. This means that readers had spent over a year getting to know and learn about Nami, all of which was essentially build-up leading to the arc where we finally learn about her past, her present struggles, the incredibly selfless reason for why she's so money-hungry, and what her actual dreams are. It's just a taste to how incredibly adept Oda, the author, is at long-form storytelling and how to slowly build up to an incredibly powerful payoff story-wise.

Though not all fishmans have the same treat for humans like Arlong, Jimbei for example. But Arlong think about them like traitors and hate them too, that's why he was pissed off. And one more thing: in OP world unfortunately not only fishmans was and can be enslave, mermaids, humans too any kind. But fishmans went through hell for sure.

I have seen the "help me" moment in three different languages, in multiple re-releases,have read it and watched it multiple times, have seen it in the live action in three languages too and it's been perfect in every version of it. Now for the trivia. The "Help Me" moment is iconic in the anime. In my opinion it's the moment these five teenagers became a real pirate crew. Also Garp's full name is Monkey D. Garp. He's known to the public as Garp the Fist, the Hero of the Marines. But people who are familiar with Garp know his full name, like Mihawk and Zeff and they realize he's related to Luffy. Zeff probably put two and two together the moment Luffy signed his name on that bill in episode 5.

If you're not a hack, and you actually know how to write, you can layer a lot of meaning into every scene, fill your stories with subtext and important recurring themes. Your dialogue can reveal so much about characters without being really explicit. You can show, instead of tell. Thank goodness this isn't being made by hacks. I'd never even heard of Eiichiro Oda until quite recently when I first got into this live action show, but he's definitely a great storyteller. I'm glad he has creative control and isn't letting a bunch of Hollywood hacks destroy his IP. All too often people will be lazy and say "oh, it's just for kids, we don't really need to try very hard", or "oh, it's just some silly story, who cares if it's full of plot holes and stupid characters." This series definitely doesn't treat its audience like idiots. Even if the source material is perhaps aimed at a younger audience, that doesn't mean it has to be bad. It can be good. It can be really, really good. Kids deserve good stories too.

Bet One Piece is not what you thought it was going be like? The story gets way deeper as you go on. Yes OP is camp but its also a very serious story. Its about slavery, oppression, fear, but hope and freedom. Also Garp's family name is not mention in the LA but it's Monkey D Garp, so being a famous super strong vice admiral in this world, people can put two and two together whenever Luffy says his full name as Monkey D Luffy that they must be family. Luffy is 17 at start of story and 7 as a kid. Also the "help me" scene is the hook for many OP fans.

It depends on your definition of corrupt. If your definition is any deviation from the law, then yes he is. If your definition is not trying to do the most good to your own judgment, then no - he isn’t. Garp is a genuine hero, and he wants to reform the marines. He believes that the marines are the way he can help the most people. He wanted to raise Luffy and now Koby to be the best marine in history - so strong that he could change the rules for good. Even as powerful as Garp is, he feels like he’s doing all he can.

Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Corrupt is relative in this world, I mean pirates as a whole are not good guys and they don't live safe happy lives very often, Garp witnessed the best pirate in the entire world still end up executed. I can't help but see Garps pov, his impulsive, unable to swim or even float in seawater, grandson is going to travel the most dangerous stretch of ocean in the entire world, to essentially compete against entire crews of people who sometimes murder on a whim... how can someone not worry, is he excessive, absolutely, but that seems more of a family trait of being kinda extra 😂
@MalkuthSephira
@MalkuthSephira 11 ай бұрын
It's 100% a family trait yeah. And yeah, corrupt isn't the right word for Garp, who's generally struggling pretty hard to actually help people who need it and doesn't hesitate to take in other marines if he sees them being legit corrupt. The World Government is majorly screwed up, Garp is just trying to navigate a pretty morally complicated world while protecting average people as much as possible. And dammit, just like his grandson, he's gonna be The Most while he does it!

neat catch on the blonde boy in the scene of gold roger's death. He's indeed someone you haven't met yet XP I mean you only seen one warlord of seven, its hard to say at this point if any of them are like mihawk at all, especially in regards to how they obey the marines. IS Garp corrupt, or is he just scared about Luffy's safety? And as for people knowing who he is: it's nit like his identity is some big secret. People know who he is, his superiors and peers know his full name, and its not lie either he or luffy are intentionally keeping their conenctiona secret, it'sjsut not a huge deal for them
@Aviertje
@Aviertje 11 ай бұрын
In regards to the iconic stabbing... Do not forget that Fishman have very thick skin. Someone like Mihawk? Maybe you can get lucky by slitting his throat while he's asleep. Arlong? Good luck reaching his heart or jugular, especially for a very (strength-)ordinary person like Nami. She's wanted to see the dude dead for the longest time, but all she can do is bottle it up and hope to buy her peoples freedom, since Arlong even has the Marines bought off to the point where tattling on him would just get everyone killed. The only possible place she can 'harm' him is by the tattoo imprinted on her own flesh, which she does, because she's basically having a mental breakdown at that point because she is about to lose everyone she cares for. She doesn't even want to risk Luffy's life at first, putting up a last bit of resistance when he interferes with the stabbing until his genuine desire to help her finally breaks down the walls that keep her from sharing her burden with him. Btw, the anime version is even more epic, especially the very original one. There's been a couple of refreshed animations over the years as they retell the early stories with newer animation, and while they are better visually, the moment is at its most epic in the original anime adaptation and easily blows the live action out of the water. The so-called 'walk to Arlong Park' is a legendary capstone on the emotionally destructive typhoon that is Nami's vulnerability during her darkest times.

Garp? Corrupt? Interesting take. He stated (or well, almost admitted) why he doesn't want Luffy to be a pirate in this episode. If telling a kid the stove is hot to prevent burns is corrupt then I guess Garp would be corrupt. Pirates are criminals, ill or "well" intentioned. If Luffy was just sailing around having adventures, he'd be a sailor, not a pirate. (An example would be Jack Sparrow. As the protagonist he's the "good guy" but really he's still a criminal, and nobody would expect him to not be executed if caught.) Also, I don't think it would be so simple as to say that the fishman Warlord would just do anything the government says. I mean, the only example of Warlord here so far is Mihawk, and that should give you a good indication of these Warlords. They were ALL pirates prior to their titles. And when Arlong says, "Jimbei is a fool" idk how much I'd trust his word. As an extremist, his pov is no doubt biased.

Garp is literally, one of the, if not the best Marine to ever wear the uniform. The way they portrayed him in the live action really doesn't do him justice. He never called up Mihawk or any warlord to do his bidding in the actual manga/anime. He's actually a really loving Grandpa that wanted the best for Luffy, he just didn't know how to express himself the right way. He doesn't even show up until way later in the manga/anime and it's supposed to be a huge reveal. This was the biggest change they made in the story for the LA.
@MalkuthSephira

I don't think they're entirely trying to do Garp the same way, which I have complicated feelings about, but I honestly find this approach to be really interesting. I wouldn't say it's better here, but it's unexpectedly fun to get a bit of a different take on the character. Though I also wouldn't blame anyone who doesn't enjoy it because it absolutely is the biggest change. Personally I felt like ep 8 does pretty well at establishing that Garp does care and is just kind of nuts (though not necessarily nuts in a bad way, at the least in a very complicated way) and Mihawk (who was told to bring him in alive, too) getting in Luffy's way would be a pretty powerful example of the brutal reality of the Grand Line and how dangerous it is there compared to the other seas, especially the East Blue. So it's definitely a very different approach to the whole concept of Garp, but it worked surprisingly well for me and slotted in nicely to the vibe of the live action, while a more directly faithful take might have felt a little too slapstick in that medium. Though again, these just my opinions, which are not more valid than anyone else's.

They made it clear that garp is legit in the last episode anyway so yeah all good.

Garp is not corrupt, I don't know where you are getting that idea. He's not like Nezumi, Garp can't be bought off by pirates. Would you rather have pirates just run around free without consequence? The marines keep the world safe from pirates like Kuro and Buggy, they can't make exceptions just because Luffy hasn't done anything wrong. It'd be like having a police officer faced with a killer and a simple shop lifter. The natural thing is to bring both in, it doesn't matter what they did. Call yourself a pirate in this world and there will be consequences. Garp's entire ship are marines who are doing the right thing so the people of the world can be safe. Luffy was born 5 years after Roger was executed so no, they are not related.

41:28 I don't think this is considered a spoiler but Garp was meant to be introduced way later in the series after Luffy, pretty much have most of his crew minus the shipwright and the Musician. As for the reason why everyone can reckon a guess why Luffy and Garp is related is due to their family name being the same, Monkey D. Luffy and Monkey D. Garp so it's not the hardest connection to be established. Luffy's dad though, thats a totally different story.

The crazy part is that none of this nuanced, complex socio-political commentary was added by the live action: it is present in the original text (though, to be fair, the oppression of the fishmen is hinted at this early in the original series and is further explored later in the story). But yeah, One Piece tackles some VERY real issues. One Piece is INCREDIBLY deceptive when it comes to the depth and complexity of its storytelling. For a show that is incredibly goofy and absurd and has very cartoony art and animation, it covers some incredibly dark and complex themes. It is NOT a kid's show, or at least not one as the west would consider it.

@jeffreymeehan3567 11 ай бұрын
@sarafontanini7051 there is no singular "big bad" in One Piece ... and something as big as the World Government isn't monolithically "bad." Oh, its systems are corrupt and often downright oppressive as fuck, its hierarchy elevates what are arguably some of the worst, least deserving people to positions of absolute authority, and its goals are primarily concerned with maintaining the status quo and its own power and the power of those that run it / it props up. But it still has genuinely good people in it that are a part of it for genuinely good reasons. And the World Government, despite its flaws, does do some genuinely good things, albeit usually as a side-effect of its primary goals and never when such would conflict with said primary goals (so, basically, like any actual real-world government). But it also brings up the question of whether that is worse than being at the utter mercy of murderous, lawless pirates and self-styled warlords.
