Same thing here. Only reason why I even gave the show a chance was because of the promotional material with the actors. The one with Oda and Luffy's actor was one of the highlights for me. Not to mention that the female actors were not spouting feminist talking points with each breath, which is incredibly rare nowadays. They all looked like they had a good time with the production and were humble by wanting to represent the source material in an authentic manner. As a long time reader of One Piece, this really helped put my mind at ease before watching it.

However, my fiance got me to watch this with her as soon as it came out. We binged it over a couple of days. It's freaking awesome. I was very pleasantly surprised. I knew nothing about One Piece except that there's a lifetime's worth of source material and anyone would need to make it a full time job to get caught up on it today. I didn't even know it was a pirate adventure story, really, though I'm vaguely certain I had heard that it was, once long ago, and forgot. Hearing Gary talk about it on a recent Open Bar with Drinker and MauLer, I got very interested. Not that Gary's recommendations hold a huge amount of weight with me, nor anyone else's, but just his enthusiasm for the show came through particularly strongly and that got my attention. And he talked a bit about it not being a bunch of girlbosses. Then MauLer said that the story structure was "normal", and the characters motivations were clear, and that it just had really ordinary, normal, non-subversive writing. Wow, have I wanted that again. So I gave it a shot, going in blind, and Gary is completely right about this. MauLer too (though he didn't give quite as strong a recommendation as Gary). This is fun entertainment, that doesn't try to do anything but be entertaining and leave you happy and satisfied. There's no agendas in it, it's *normal*. The stories just make sense. It's genuine, you can't help but like the characters. Even the villains are quite charismatic. I was never a Brony, but I remember when MLP:FIM was going on, there were a lot of people talking about why all these random adults, and a lot of adult men, were interested in this little cartoon show for young girls. And the explanation that made the most sense to me was that it was part of the New Sincerity movement. Basically, a reaction to the postmodern, cynical garbage being shoved down everyone's throats everywhere else in culture. People want stories that are familiar in structure, featuring characters that are good and honest and trying to do the right thing, with approachable and colorful aesthetics, and a positive moral message. That's it. Nothing more deeper or complicated than that. People want stuff that looks good, feels good and aspirational, and makes them happy as they go about their lives. While most of Hollywood is trying to push depressing grays and deconstructions of every hero and villain until you can't tell the two apart. One Piece seems to fit in perfectly with that New Sincerity movement. To be unashamedly in pursuit of one's dreams, and to help one's friends to achieve theirs as well, that's awesome. This show won me over almost immediately by how seriously it took itself, and how colorful and lively it was. The situations are ridiculous, the world is bizarre, but who cares because it's fun and it has a positive, optimistic outlook. And I am so hungry for stories like that again, from when I was young and not so cynical myself, and Hollywood still put out optimistic and normal stories. More of this please.

I also love the lore that Sanji's "Black Leg" fighting style was inherited from Zeff. The idea was that Zeff only used his hands for cooking, not fighting. Hence his nickname "Red Leg". Because all the blood of his enemies would end up there. So not only did he sacrificed his main mode of attack to save young Sanji, but he even taught him how to use his techniques to make sure he can hold his own against anyone.
@mikeb5067
@mikeb5067 8 ай бұрын
I never thought of that. Like the impact when jax girl got her hand slammed in a car door when she was a baby heart surgeon in Sons of Anarchy. I can see them doing something with that, using his hands in a fight when he doesn't have a choice and fucking up his cooking - his passion and purpose. (Also was done well in the first Dr strange movie)

@@ot7biasedmashups But again, Zeff did make sure another kick-fighting chef would take his place and live long enough to see the All Blue, that being Sanji. In a way, Zeff is what Garp wanted to be for Luffy. The only difference is that Garp tore Luffy's dream down every chance he gets (mostly because it's not in-line with his principles). But Zeff was lucky enough to meet someone just like him. And he did it all to keep Sanji's dream alive. Even at the cost of his own. I knew my father would do the same, rest his soul. Speaks volumes on what a good father figure can do.

22:28 I keep thinking about the scene of Nami asking Luffy for help. Oda really didn't hold back in his writing. Throughout the season we had been introduced to this strong female character, only to find out that beneath the surface she was barely holding together. For years she had been carrying the burden of trying to save her loved-ones by first being enslaved and working herself to the ground, then stealing and betraying everyone she met, making her unable to form any real friendships. Then she finds out that it was all for nothing and there was never any hope to begin with. She is broken mentally and even starts stabbing herself in her desperation and lashes out against Luffy when he tries to stop her. Her last resolve was to at least ensure the Strawhats wouldn't be dragged down with her, but Luffy sees right through her. Then as she hits rock-bottom she can finally be true to herself: "Luffy, help me!" Luffy doesn't answer right away, but instead places his hat on her head. The hat, which we have learned, is his greatest treasure and represents his dream of becoming the king of the pirates. "Of course I will." From now on I will be much more invested in both Luffy and Nami as characters and this scene of Nami showing weakness has in fact strengthened both of them! Hollywood writers need to look at this and take note of how to write compelling characters. After seeing them broken down, it is much more satisfying when we see them overcome their past weakness - simple but effective.

My wife and I watched this on a lark..."lol another Netflix Anime adaptation?! Let's see how bad it is!" Having absolutely no background on One Piece we came away feeling...overjoyed at how GOOD the show is! You could tell just how much the cast was invested and loved what they were doing. This is incredible and could be one of the best things ever created for Television. So, after enjoying it so much, I decided to go online and find out what "real" fans thought of it, thinking that perhaps we only enjoyed it because we didn't know the lore...lo and behold, nearly everyone saying that it was faithful to the original content and they were loving it, too! I can't express how happy that made me, knowing so many real fans out there were happy with this live action! It also made me a bit sad, knowing the franchises I truly loved as a 'real' fan were butchered by Netflix (Witcher, Cowboy Bebop, etc.) and I lamented what could have been. I truly, TRULY hope that Hollywood and Netflix and all studios see this and pay attention and start treating IP's with as much love and care as was done with One Piece. Love, Two brand new OnePiece superfans.

You are 100% right, respecting the source material is part of why this show was so good. The other was the fact they only used CG for impossible effects like the rubber, Buggy, etc. They built almost all of the ships and sets in the show. And it just makes everything more believable. Seeing a real Going Merry just draws you into the world.

eeeee, Usopp represents African countries in canon. it was literally stated by Oda. You can say he's mixed, because of his mother, but that doesn't change that he would be african in our world. Luffy f.e. would be brazilian (so mexic is close enough). If someone is a bit tan in manga, it usually means he's black. That's just a stylistic choice, so really no race swaps. I wouldn't be surprised if in the auditions they put them all together to see who had chemistry and picked the best group even if there might have been better individual actors (not saying the acting was bad, quite the opposite) in each part. That's something Hollywood used to do, and fell out of favor with studios going for name recognition above all else.

I didn’t think anyone knew how to make TV like this anymore, this is the classic cartoon world where all the physics are turned around. I always love good world building. I haven’t seen such great character development in sooo long. Giving the origin story of each character was so well done, you just had to be engaged. Hey, my wife and I call him Zoro too. That first name is a tongue twister. I turned to my wife and said damn good dialogue when the girl boss told Zoro how nature will favor him, no matter how much she trains. I bet that sent thousand blue hair Karen’s to the ER over that, but it was so brilliantly written, my jaw hung the floor. All of the dialogue is expertly written. Some of the best I’ve heard in a long time. I really hope they don’t ruin this great show, going for the Grand Line alone seems exciting. My wife loved this show. She literally laughed and cried and was engaged throughout the entire season. She was literally brought to tears several times and she’s not one to go to tears as quickly as most women. Wednesday was also,pretty good. Not as good as One Piece, but at least it was watchable and better than everything being made today. So far, the writers of Cobra Kai haven’t ruined that property. Who would have thought the writers could go six season based off of a 1980s movie? I thought the last season of Cobra Kai was the best except for the first season. Since it’s hard for any show to have one of it’s best season in the fifth season, they did a good job. Bringing Chozen back was brilliant. His character was great. My wife and I both felt that the fight choreography in One Piece was the best we’ e seen in a long time, certainly millions of times better than Rey and Kylo’s fight with Snoke’s Imperial Guards… by a mile. She really loved the character of Dracule Mihawk, who is very awesome. Not just his crazy sword skills, but his attitude is unlike most badass heavies in movies today. He has an air of class about him and fairness. It’s a great show and if you’ve been looking for something good to watch on streaming, watched Once pIece and you won’t regret it. No matter how weird and silly it seems, it will grab your heart and not let go. This is how characters should be developed and interact with one another. What a great show, especially considering what else there is to watch. There is not a weak character in the cast, seriously.

Another aspect I absolutely love about the One Piece Live Action is how they used the wanted posters to depict scale. The big glowing bounty numbers literally in-your-face telling you how dangerous certain enemies are. When the crew struggles with $15M Buggy, then $16M Kuro shows up, you immediately get a sense of his threat level before any fighting has even happened. The payoff of this is Mihawk being noticeably (BOUNTY CANCELLED) just before he cuts a ship in half. For new viewers, this becomes a "how big is that jump? $30M? $300M?" Finally, Mihawk toying with Zoro without breaking a sweat sets a gut-wrenching realization that these $15-20M bounties are child's play in the broader world. This is the kiddie's wading pool that Luffy and the Strawhats are currently in. ((Season 2 spoilers below)) Season 1 hasn't even finished the _prologue_ yet. The East Blue saga isn't even Chapter 1 - it's the setup _before_ Chapter 1 can even start proper. The Grand Line map isn't pointing them to the final destination. It's pointing them to the STARTING LINE.

@dragonbretheren
@dragonbretheren 8 ай бұрын
@@superspies32 My theory regarding your spoiler: My guess is Laughtale is just the backside of Reverse Mountain and therefore technically _is_ on the map, but not how people expect. If you think about it, that's where the "furthest destination" along the Grand Line/New World would be (because that's how circles work). Also, the Red Line and Grand Line form a convenient X on the planet marking the spot (knowing that they are at 45 degree angles, and not the equator/prime meridian respectively). Also also, it would make sense that all of the "destination" dreams on the Straw Hat crew take them back to Reverse Mountain: It's technically the point where all four oceans meet (a.k.a. All Blue), it's where Laboon is waiting, and if it's also where Laughtale is, then it would be the perfect "laughing tale" to cap off the journey. It's also the furthest point on the planet from the seat of the World Government (on the other intersection of RL/GL, on the opposite side of the planet), so it would make thematic sense that that's where the seed of "freedom" waits.

You think Sanji’s backstory is great now? (It is, but oh boy does it go even harder later) There are three big things that I think really made this work. First, and most impactful, Oda sat over this show like a goalie, keeping it true to his story. Second, so many of the people working on it are huge fans of the story they’re telling. Last, whatever could be done with practical effects was. They built the ships. Zoro and Sanji can actually fight. They ground the show in reality, and that let them be believably fantastical. I needed more when we got done, so I read the manga 😅 my partner started a rewatch of the anime. I’m watching the live action for a third time with our kid. I’m really glad it broke the live action curse

One of the many things I appreciate about One Piece is how they managed to pull off the live action pirate aesthetic. It reminded me of Pirates of the Caribbean at times, but with an added flare of Oda's ship, charm, writing and character designs. I'm glad Gary got the chance to binge this show because yeah, it really *is* the best show of 2023. Words cannot describe how HAPPY I am to become a fan.😁

As a kid from California who grew up weird because i watched anime, this was always the show that i could never manage to pick up. I had to have tried at least 10 times before i just conceded. When i saw how much praise and excitement this show was getting and the OG creator's input in the show, I was hoping this would help me feel compelled. After watching it, I dove into the world building and immediately got obsessed. Needless to say, I've fully caught up with the anime (taking the manga slowly) and it has begun to contest my favorite animes of all time. Such an inspirational; nearly perfect story.

Literally the exact same thing for me. I watched like a hundred episodes about. 7 years or so ago, and was like eh on it. Then seeing the hype for the live action got me back into the anime, and watched it up through the beginning Thriller Bark, where I then picked up manga, and am now caught up reading weekly. Although, when I did catch up it was the first chapter of the Kuma flashback so it was literal despair for those first 7 or so chapters I read caught up. 😂

It’s wild especially about boys vs girls when it came to zoro and kuina . In the anime a few months ago , zoro at his current peak power faced a opponent who kept saying he is a genetic superior to zoro. Zoro told him “that’s the kind of excuse I hate the most” it is a subtle call back to kuina . Zoro beat him . Proving to kuina even now that there is no disadvantage that can’t be overcome. Kuina , had she lived could have possibly been just as strong especially when there a few strong women in one piece even in the top 4 tier

True, but that being said One Piece does not follow real world logic. If you have a frail and weaker body, you can train your Haki (The one piece version of aura, ki, chakra, etc...) and use it to make yourself faster/stronger. Is what Shanks used to drive away the sea monster btw. And Zoro has one of the highest levels of Haki in the series, so even opponents physically stronger (not many, but they exist) can be beaten. As a bonus, imbuing yourself in haki makes it possible to nullify the devil fruit users invulnerability, meaning even a guy that can turn into smoke can be wounded by a haki user.

Zoro facing King a genetic superior to him , fighting in wano the homeland of their ancestors was a nice bow to that original story

It’s by far the best version of an intro into the series out there, head and shoulders above the anime and manga when it comes to getting immersed quickly. But, like so many other fans, I wish that they’d had the budget and/or time to draw it out a little bit more in order to properly introduce the straw hats. I only watched some clips of the anime years ago and I just found it different than any other animes in terms of the artstyle and never was interested to watch because I am more into shorter animes like Dr. Stone Then last year, One Piece got so much hype due to some specific things in the latest episodes that time (I won't spoil it but if you know then you know). That made me wanna watch One Piece but still too scared to start because I didn't continue some other long shounen animes like Naruto or Bleach (not because I don't like it but I don't really have time) so I was scared that the same thing might happen to One Piece. Then this live action came, and after watching it, I finally started. And here we are, I am all caught up in the anime lol (not manga) and seeing some new Netflix videos about incoming OPLA season 2, it just takes me back hahaha. Nami became my most favorite character after the live action, and she still is even in the anime. One of the latest arcs showed some wonderful Nami moments which showed how much she grew since Arlong Park, and those details for my favorite character also showed me how much the Strawhat crew grew throughout the episodes🥹 I can't wait for the season 2 of OPLA after seeing recent Netflix videos announcing Season 2, one with Usopp's actor (on April Fool's Day which is also Usopp's birthday), and another is with Luffy's actor (on May 5 which is also Luffy's birthday)

@@jmutube61191 Yes that's true. I've watched some interviews/reviews regarding the changes and I find the changes understandable. Even the author Oda said that he understands if some fans are disappointed of the changes and he just then positively replied that those feelings of these fans came from a place of love (this is one thing I liked about Oda). But despite the changes, there were some cool Easter eggs or manga details that they adapted. Like example, the scene where Nami stole a ship from the two pirates in the LA Episode 1, her outfit there is her outfit of her early concept style drew by Oda (her early concept also included a metal arm and a weapon battle axe) which was changed to the Nami we knew currently in the manga/anime. Another example is the scene between Zeff and Garp at episode 7 where Zeff told some stories regarding the Jaya arc which the Strawhat crew went to after Alabasta. Speaking of stories, in the LA, they also hinted about Noland the Liar when Nami is reading a story to an unconscious Zoro after his fight with Mihawk. And there are other Easter eggs that are included, whether it was the Revolutionary Army mentioned at a newspaper that Kaya was reading at episode 8, or the Yohohoho song being played in the background during Luffy's backstory, they did their best👍

Skypiea is also infamously one of the slower arcs. The next one is a lot of people’s favorites. @@chrisgsayshello

The actor who plays luffy is so wholesome with how enthusiastic he is about his job

he really seemed to be luffy in real life. minus the stretching i assume.... part of what makes what is initially a really annoying character become very likable pretty quickly. the enthusiasm luffy has on screen looks legit because it looks like it is 100% legit. whod have thought casting people excited to play a character they like would be better than casting grumpy turds who have never heard of the character and hate everything they know about that character? such a mystery, cant believe it was ever solved.

another great thing yall wil notice is the passing on of dreams to the next person. garp > koby zeff > sanjii Kuina > zoro and some other really really cool examples i wont spoil. The story is generational honoring all ages

Never knew what One Piece was until the Netflix series. I don’t watch anime and knew it had been around for a long time but didn’t give it the time of day. The Netflix series made me obsessed with the series, the cast, and the story. I can’t get enough.

When you get through the Amazon Lily - end of Marineford set of chapters. I've read comics for my whole life, it's a truly incredible continuous run of chapters. It's like reading a new The Iliad or Odyssey and knowing it's gonna be immortalized once it gets to the masses. The story hits those mythological beats and things that resonate with people no matter where you are from.

Im an old school Anime nerd. Im in my 40's now, I grew up on Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Robotech etc. One Piece isnt a show I ever really watched, just not something I ever really was interest in since it came a bit past my time as it were, but damn Im so proud to see this show succeed. Just the fact that they care, and have so much respect for the source material is heartening.
