For the China one: First, all the signage is very standardized in all major airports in China, so that was instantly a domestic Chinese airport based on the signs for gates, exits, etc. Second, all the people you saw were Chinese. The hairstyle on the younger guy is very Chinese if you live here, and that old guy at the end, same. The fact there aren't actually any foreigners here is a giveaway the opposite of what you were thinking (non-major city). The real clue though was the multiple stores with Sichuan (四川) in the name, especially the one with the ladies out front. Those stores indicate that you're in that province and they are selling touristy stuff for people to buy to take home/give as gifts wherever they are flying to. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan and likely the only city that's going to have as modern an airport as you're seeing here. Very hard without knowing Chinese of course, but quite simple if you can. Also, side note that Shanghai does have two major airports if you're doing something like this again. Pudong (very east side of the city) is the bigger/major one, Hongqiao (more west, the one you picked) is also international but more domestic focused.
@agoston_fekete

Even if you can't read Chinese, the logo of Sichuan Airlines was visible on the flight information panel. Sichuan Airlines flight to Shenzen is likely to be in Chengdu - although Chengdu also got two major airports, and in this case, it was the older and less busy one.

The departure board also showed the flight number so if you allowed yourself to Google that, you'd see it was a Chengdu-Shenzhen flight. As someone who has lived in China in the past, for me the most interesting thing is how good Tom is at recognising random foliage but then it seemed to take him ages to realise he was in a Chinese airport in spite of all the clues - just goes to show how different we all are.

I didn’t play along but it was fun watching that last round. I used to live in Papua New Guinea, and when I saw that guy from above I thought he looked Melanesian and started suspecting PNG. Then I saw the Hevilift helicopter, which is one of the main ones they use there for mining and started being more sure. If you had zoomed in maybe it would have been possible to see the tail number that would have started with P2. But then you zoomed in on the beer advertisement and saw clear as day the bird of paradise. From there on it was just knowing that you were about to get completely wrecked.

Even without any knowledge of Chinese characters, it was clear given the near total lack of English signage that this airport was deep, deep inside China. No way in hell it was going to be Shanghai or Beijing fo example. That would've been enough for a decent guess, even checking major airports on the map for matching Chinese characters.

This is for sure one of my favorite type of maps. Managed to beat you for two of the rounds even, but did horribly in two of the ones you did good in. Round 1: Clocked the South Asian looking clothing but my gut feeling wasn't as sure on India or Pakistan for some reason. The landscape wasn't looking the part for me, so I went for the greener more mountainous northern parts of Iran, close to Tehran and got 1751 points. Round 2: Recognized the Chinese, clocked that it had to be an airport in a major city in Mainland China, and it had to be a relative distance away from Shenzhen, so it could not be Hong Kong or Guangzhou, and I was not picking up on any Beijing vibes. On a whim I decided on Chongqing Airport, which happens to be close enough to Chengdu to net me 4268 points. Round 3: Flubbered this one big time. I was convinced that mostly all of Europe has official coverage, including the East and there are no truly obscure Street View countries in Europe. So based on the Christian cross, small spread out towns and mountainous landscape, I just guessed it would have to be some obscure place in South America. I had never seen a Paraguay round so I decided on the mountainous parts of Paraguay. 13 points, big oof. Round 4: Easy, got it spot on. Went to Dili and found it within seconds. It helped here to know that "masjid" is just another word for mosque. Round 5: Had to guess completely based on vibes like you did, but my vibes sensor was picking up more on the South East Asia or Oceania looking foliage. Though instead of noticing the off-road cars clue which would point to somewhere less built up like PNG, I decided on Brunei as a wild guess. 569 points, so not a huge win on distance but at least I was roughly in the correct region of the world.

From the last one I could tell it wasn’t Caribbean. The cars and utes are very Australian, so to not travel too far they must be close to Australia. Also another reason as to why so much is in English. I have lived in Australia so that may be only something you would notice after living there but something to consider for future rounds. Sitting in my bedroom, I did actually call PNG. Reasons - the cars looked very Australian, Lots of Toyotas, and a ute. The crocodile in the pool said it was more likely in Australasia than the Caribbean to me. The Germans had a bit to do with the founding of PNG from a western perspective hence the Heineken bits. And lastly, the place had the look of accommodations for a mining camp rather than a tourist operation. Not sure if that's what it is but just gave me that vibe.

If you knew a bit of Chinese, the Chengdu airport would have been easier because the shop had 四川 = Sichuan province in the name. Also Papua New Guinea was my guess from a few videos I watched from the youtube channel "Missionary Bush Pilot." Transportation infrastructure there is almost non-existent so the helicopters, the barrels of aviation fuel, and the Australian vibe of the compound all suggested someplace like Papua New Guinea.

Timor Leste is only obscure if you're not portuguese since it was a former portuguese colony. "Leste" is a Portuguese word that means "east" and was adopted after the independence to distinguish the now independent country from the west side of the Timor island, which is still part of Indonesia. Also, the Santa Cruz cemetery massacre, executed by the occupying indonesian troups on the 12th of November 1991, was all over the news in many countries, not just in Portugal.

Papua New Guinea (the south of it specifically) makes a lot of sense for the last one. A mixed colonial vibe of Dutch and English with the Heineken and dare I say the closest helicopter had the old Dutch flag with the orange instead of red (huge stretch), meanwhile they speak English. At the same time, the people were dark skinned without looking African, matching the native Papuans.

Unfortunate that Tom did not spot it and go "no, they are not going to trick me with this" ;-)

As a boy from the West Midlands, it was funny that you ended with the Crossroads Hotel. 'That's right Miss Diane, but we're a Motel not a Hotel'. Peace All

I’ve commented it before but a straight line mission across Germany could be possible in the state Schleswig Holstein: Going from North Sea to Baltic Sea, mainly through fields and small villages

My guess is the PNG round will primarily be worker accommodation for fly-in fly-out mining or similar.

Fortunately I got the Lichtenstein-round after driving all along this highway just yesterday 😅! Timor was too easy. For the rest: I DID think it was Bavaria / Alps when actually it was in Pakistan, thinking these were Indien tourists … and the last one was definitely a military / peace force trainingscamp to me, the helicopters were mockups in my eyes, but I thought Kosovo, it’s near the Med, they might have palmtrees 😳😉🤣thx!

The obvious choice for next straight line country is Italy. A little north of the foot gives a width close to the England line and not very mountainous. Just do it with a native Italian speaker, in case of people 😅

I knew the last one had to be Oceania, the vibes were just there for Pacific island. I thought PNG right away but for some reason thought New Caledonia was also possible. I didn't see the English, else I'd have eliminated it. Quite close all things considered but islands can be punishing. Good game, you still beat me in the end

The only reason I knew it was Chengdu airport was the from the flight code-3U (Sichuan Airlines). I know that 3U departs to and from Chengdu, which is what made me realise it was that specific airport.

I had an absolutely awful score this game, partly because I forgot to look for the photo-taker names and I habitually play all five rounds before watching Tom's video rather than going back and forth. The fourth round, of course, was easy to get close. Amusingly, though, my guess for the first round turned out to be almost the exact spot where the third round was. Unfortunately my third round guess wasn't in the right country either. Thanks for the game!

Good idea for you - there's a map I made which is a bunch of photospheres from the top of scottish mountains and hills across the entire country. The maps called "Scottish Peaks" by bender2322. Never had a 25,000 but have come very close. Have fun!
