An Indian's Question To Liberals On The Confederate Statue Issue!

Many prominent liberals like John Oliver, The Young Turks, and Hasan Minhaj have thrown their support behind taking down statues of Confederate Generals/Soldiers and Racist and Religious Bigots like Christopher Columbus in the United States. I also feel that while not all monuments should be targeted, the monuments celebrating the most egregious forms of bigotry, on taxpayer dollars, should definitely be taken down.
However, I ask these liberals that while they wholeheartedly support taking down the statues of racists and religious bigots in America, why do they attack Indians when they want to rename places named after blatant religious bigots and Islamic supremacists like Babur and Aurangzeb? Why do they call such demands "Saffronization" and "Hindutva fascism"?

Of course yes! It's nauseating. Both confederate slave owners and the exploitative Mughals need to be shown in their true colours. But, in my humble opinion, just tearing down their statues and renaming the places wouldn't change anything. People should be taught about the true nature. With Republicans retaining the Dixies for decades and totally enslaved INC and a toothless BJP, we can just dream about that. Note: As Iyervval said in your podcast, even if the NCERT history syllabi are changed, there would be no much difference or would even be worse.

We should, let history remain the way it was, removing statues and renaming buildings and roads will not change history. We should channel our outrage, anger and shame to create things which will create a better future, instead of bickering over who has been f**ked over the worst some 200 years back. History is just that, accept it, learn about it, make your peace with it, and understand that for better or worse, that is something that cannot be changed. We can either wallow in pity and stew in our outrage and call everyone aggressors and blame our failures on a street called Aurangzeb Marg where I have to go to work everyday, Or do look beyond history, focus on what I am supposed to do, do a good job, and build a better future for everyone. Unfortunately, people choose to address street names and statues first, losing time which they could have spent trying to better themselves, or trying to keep things quiet, so the others who are trying to make things better can do a better job. That my friend, is the world which we live in. A lot of people derive inspiration and motivation from the worst point in their lives. Slave owner statues weren’t put up because they were slave owners, they had done something good for the community or the society they lived in, and bringing their statues won’t negate things that have already happened. What will happen, is that a few generations later, no one will be able to claim victimhood due to slavery, because it will be wiped clean from the streets and history books too. I failed when I was in class 6. So now that I am a mid level manager in a privately held company. I will tear up my 6th class report card. That will change the fact that I failed in school. Bravo. Not being one to just tear down ideas, I will add, one can let everything stay, statues, street names and place a plaque below the statues and at the entrance of the streets, describing the person, after whom the street has been named. And as for other famous people, examples of whom you gave, the country can make newer landmarks, build newer streets and name them after lesser known freedom fighters and other current luminaries, instead of naming them after recent or even current political leaders.

American History is one of my favorite subjects. Thank you Sham chai for talking about this topic! In my opinion, I do not agree with tearing down all Confederate statues. Our founding fathers such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and ten other presidents were also slave owners as well. If we are going to erase history of the Confederacy, then that means we should also erase George Washington (our founding father) Thomas Jefferson, (our Declaration of Independence author), James Madison (our father of the Constitution), James Monroe (the man with the Monroe Doctrine) and James K.Polk (the President who helped the US win the Mexican-American war, and also adding California, Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and parts of Colorado and New Mexico), because all these presidents were slave owners as well.

The point is that it's not wrong to bring down confederate statues because of what the statues represent. Confederate statues are a direct representation of glorifying white supremacy. The statues of the founding fathers isn't that. It is a representation of what they did to build America. Although Thomas Jefferson and Washington owned slaves they still spoke up against it on multiple instances. "We hold these rights to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.." ; Jefferson was always for a free society. Why he owned slaves is still a question many historians ponder over. By the time Washington died he had freed all the slaves that he owned. It is kind of like how everyone speak up against fossil fuels and global warming but still own cars. We're reaping the benefits of what we speak against.

So normally wouldn't have bothered to reply or anything but actually did wonder about this recently. I do agree that a conversation about the removal of confederate statues is needed. And so when it comes to India yes I do believe that at least places like roads and stuff on Aurengazeb etc should be renamed to honour actually decent people especially people like Abdul Gaffar Khan. When it comes to monuments and these places there is one important difference, these statues weren't created during the confederacy but were constructed in Jim Crow and Civil Rights era to intimidate African-Americans' whereas any naming of Mughal names for places wasn't and Mughal architecture was actually just created by them. Anyway, I more or less completely agree with your view. Although you do mislead your audience in some aspects. The "saffronization" term on renaming places wasn't about just stuff like Aurengazeb Road but even more innocuous stuff like cities with Muslim sounding names like Allahabad. Also, man you're pretty much over-simplifying Babri Masjid if you claim it was just an event that was caused by people's voice is not heard being for years when that debate was in fact actually flared up by politicians in late 80s after the area being locked for decades by Supreme court's rulings. For renaming of cities like Allahabad etc you may or may not agree with doesn't really matter either way tbh, it is at the end of the day a matter of preference.
