I would like to thank you for making this retrospective. The Sly trilogy is a series that's extremely special to me, and you did the entire trilogy justice. You seemed to care as much about making a quality retrospective, as Sucker Punch cared about making a quality series. I especially appreciate you analysis of the music Peter McConnell composed, he really is excellent. That stuff was very interesting to me because I'm not the most educated when it comes to music.I think the Sly trilogy is flawed, as you stated. But nothing is ever so bad that it kills the experience. That and the highs in these games are extremely high. I hope we can get more platformers like Sly in the future, fun games to play with an emphasis on story and character. But as you said in you video; they don't make games like this anymore.

Murray in china dragging the old vaan is important because it's a parallel to sly 1 where you always used to cover murray in turret missions to get him out of trouble he caused out of clumsiness Now, as a different grown murray, he finds himself in the same situation but instead of clumsiness it's caused by his determination and willpower

I’m surprised we didn’t dissect the theme “Murray fights the hybrids.” There is a call back to Murray’s line “The Murray knows no song, but the triumphant horn section of his own triumph!" The horns are center stage in his final fight, showing all of his growth, and triumph.

1:27:23 this is why I like to headcanon that the guru is some, like danny devito esque character, who only told murray not to murder because it was convenient to him sending murray away on a "mission" for as long as possible, so he could finally get some alone time, he doesnt actually gaf might as well play with what the game gives ya, its comedic

I came across your retrospectives in my search for analyses that do this series justice and you blew all expectations out of the water! I’m so happy to see yourself and the comments filled with people as crazy about this underrated series as I am! I grew up playing them with my siblings and we’d spend countless hours replaying them. Our ps2 kicked the bucket so I’ve been replaying the series on an emulator for the first time in at least a decade and it holds up just as well in my late 20s as it did as a child! I also have the opportunity to introduce my friends to it who never tried it when they were younger!

I just marathoned your Sly retrospectives. You did a great job offering up a new perspective (your critiques of the music were very thought provoking and something I hadn't heard anyone else delve into). My one quibble is your statement that Penelope was the one who had to "learn about true love" and overcome her flaws to be with Bentley. I think putting the onus on Penelope for being "shallow" is unfair. Both Penelope AND Bentley lied about their appearances online. And, up until the latter part of the pirate level, Bentley acts like he's entitled to her affection just because he knew her first. Bentley had strong "Nice Guy" vibes (which scares women off like kryptonite). And Penelope didn't start seeing him as a potential love interest until he cut that nonsense out and started treating her like a person/friend instead of a trophy that he didn't want to let Sly take from him. It wasn't about "learning what true love means". It was about Bentley learning to respect her as a person and a teammate regardless of whether or not she chose to return his affections. Just some food for thought. :)
@IKGProductions
@IKGProductions 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliments, I’m glad you got so much out of the retrospectives. Your comments regarding Penelope and Bentley are really eye-opening. I am convinced I was looking at this from the wrong perspective this whole time. The lesson at the end of the day is truly about Bentley learning to love Penelope for who she is. The self-proclaimed “nice guy” stereotype is actually a really good metaphor for the kind of way Bentley was seeing things for quite some time. Perhaps in a sense, I failed to due justice to Penelope’s character with that aspect of the analysis. That kinda bums me out because I’m really passionate about this topic, but hey, you live and you learn! Again. I really appreciate your analysis of their character dynamics and the ensuing lesson at the end of it all.
@MsBrendalina
@MsBrendalina 3 жыл бұрын
@@IKGProductions I appreciate the reply. IMO, a lot of male fans don't pick up on the "Nice Guy" thing in Sly 3 because they never have to deal with it in real life. They just assume Penelope is shallow for liking Sly initially and don't examine Bentley's responsibility in why she wasn't interested in him romantically when they first met in person. As a girl who interacted with a lot of nerdy guys growing up (and eventually married one), I related to the Penelope/Bentley storyline a LOT.

@@IKGProductions Right? I did a 2.5 hour video on Sly 1, 4 hours on Sly 2, and 3.5 on Sly 3 with a similar video coming for Sly 4. It just is mind-blowing to me given it's a series that hasn't had a new entry in 8 years and isn't nearly as mainstream as some of these other games that are prominently featured in long format videos. I'll have to start with the Sly 1 video and move from through them. It'll be interesting to see what we agree/disagree with.

It's been a few years since I played these games but I distinctly remember loving how it controlled. The only 3D platformer I've played that is arguably handles better is a Hat in Time. I haven't got through the whole video yet but I was a little worried when a saw the timestamp I have to admit. Despite that though you seem to have a really tight grasp on pacing, I struggle to do that for a 30 minute video so for a 4 hour one really should be commended. In particular I appreciate you citing a lot of the inspirations behind characters, naming coventions etc. Stuff like that has always been super cool to me. Only bit of advice I can give is that in future I would avoid using full cutscenes, a lot of the audience for a 4 hour Sly video have likely played these games before, bits and pieces is fine, but in most cases we can infer whats going on with the accompanying visuals.

I actually recently did a marathon of the games myself, a great series of games, I actually just love the Holy Trinity (Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, and Jak and Daxter), they just represent the best of PS2 platforming games to me, as soon as they came out on PS3 I bought them straight away, now all of them have their own problems (most notably a lot of stuff in R&C), but I just love being able to play them on a more modern console, hell I even bought the PS4 version of the Jak and Daxter games, I mean don't get me wrong, when the first Jak and Daxter came out on PS4 there was a Power Cell that would crash the game, the one where you push the flut flut egg over the cliff, but that was soon patched and other than that it was smooth sailing, so it was worth it to me.

Fantastic job my friend! Once again you've provided an excellent analysis for this series, and once again despite there being some points of disagreements here or there, you've presented them in a very understandable manner. Really making it hard for me to come up with new things to say whenever I eventually get to this series, but I'll figure that out when the time comes ha ha. Don't really have much to argue with here, while I would be less harsh towards the sailing, I can't deny that it pretty much is the worst part of the trilogy. Any other disagreements would be so small they wouldn't really be worth mentioning. But, Sly 3, such an interesting game, it easily has the highest highs of the series, but unfortunately has some shortcommings that leave Sly 2 still overall the superior game. Not that it matters too much, Sly 2 is a masterpiece, and Sly 3 is only slightly lower than it, which still leaves us with 2 phenomenal games. I still haven't decided which game's story I prefer, it's so hard for me to choose. Once again, 3 has higher highs in the story, but there are some small flaws here and there, that while easily overlooked, still get in the way just a tiny bit. But those high highs, man, Dr M is easily my favorite villain in the series, and one of my favorite villains in general, not just in games either. Wish we could have gotten a little more of him, and I agree it was a missed opportunity that they didn't explore what Dr M would think of Clockwerk and the Fiendish Five. Does he even know that Sly's dad is dead? At the beginning when he catches you at the vault, he says "Cooper! No, you must be Sly Cooper" implying the thought you were Sly's dad at first glance. Also, the Panda King is with you, if only we could have seen him interact with Dr M, imagine that conversation. I love every bit of screen time Dr M has, only complaint is there wasn't more. Also, the gauntlet of the ancestors is my favorite part of the entire series, I don't think I need to elaborate as you summed it up quite nicely. But one thing I'll mention is when you get to Sly's dad's section, when I first played this I guess I didn't see the blue sparkles on the laser because I didn't get the idea you could slide on it. So I waited there trying to find out what I had to do, and if you wait, Sly will comment on the blue sparkles, and if you wait longer he'll figure out that he can slip on the laser. Every time I play this I wait for Sly to figure it out on his own. Gameplay wise, it does fall victim to having so many gameplay styles and not all of them are as fleshed out as they can be. It would be fine if it didn't affect the new playable characters, but only having 2 missions for the Panda King and Dimitri is a bit disappointing. At least they made good use out of the Guru, but I did rather like the Panda King even if he's pretty simple. That honestly is my biggest gripe with the game, but it doesn't detract much. I still love this game, even if not quite as much as 2, and that was the perfect ending for the trilogy. While I think there certainly is potential to expand the story past this, given what happened, it probably would have been best if it stayed ended. Once again, great work dude, proud of you for getting this out!

No matter how many games I’ve played through my life, my love for the Sly trilogy has thus far gone unparalleled. In the past I’ve chalked it up to nostalgia, but these videos have been eye-opening. I never really gave the writing and narrative nearly enough credit! Even though I love the games so much, I’ve always brushed it off as “childhood favourite fun! Nostalgia good!” Seems like I didn’t even give my own enjoyment enough credit! It’s such a shame that the Sanzaru repackage wasn’t exactly airtight for the new players to fully enjoy the experience, and such a shame Sly hasn’t seen the same nostalgic resurgence of other pop culture phenomenons in recent years. I’ve sung my praises up and down for these games forever but I haven’t managed to convince a single one of my friends to play them yet. In a way these videos were a much needed discussion that I’ve been missing out on all these years. I’m so glad I stumbled upon these. It pointed out the things I loved about Sly, but also articulated and validated the things I’ve had trouble with! (Like that horrendous pirate ship overworld. Ugh.) These must have taken forever to make! My sincerest thanks for the hours of indulgence you’ve given me. Normally I don’t have the attention span to sit down for a twenty minute video, but I binged all of these in less than 24 hours. I’m in the mood to create! Side note, looking at Sly’s silhouette always puts me in the mood to draw. What an amazing design! He really deserves to be held up the way other characters have been over the years. I’m grateful, though, that Sucker Punch knew to quit while they were ahead. It really speaks to their love and respect for video games as a means of art and storytelling. I’m also grateful that the remaining Sly fandom is collectively ignoring that Sly 4 ever existed. It’s not canon and I’ll take that to my grave!! 😤😤 holy cow I don’t think I’ve ever left such a long comment in my life. Pardon me! I hope you’re having good weather, wherever you are! You deserve it!

Beautifully done, 🙂😁 I finally started playing sly 3 myself and I already am enjoying it more than sly 2 *I do enjoy 2 but I do have my fair share of quibbles, it doesn't ruin anything though, and sly 1 I generally say it's a simple but fun experience* it's interesting to see in how franchises start out as simple in their first respective outings to growing more in the sequels *especially when it comes to the typical 3 games in and we're giving everything we got* and I did read that sly comic when I was young, but sadly never played 3 at the time *ratchet: deadlocked got my attention* mind you as I said before in a few of the streams, especially j when he was playing mgs 4: I am playing the vita version of the collection, overall, you did really wonderful IKG, 😁

Despite being outperformed by her previous VA, Sly 3's Carmelita actually has a Spanish accent, and a good one at that. Still feels weird how she pretty much has none in the other 2 games despite specifically being of Hispanic heritage

I think Carmelita patroling around during the heist in Rumble Down Under is quite coherent. I mean, the miners were actually (probably) in their right (legally). So it seems logic they would have called the cops on the Gang, day one. It seems quite logical.

Personal Opinion on Sly 4: Like Monkey Island 4, it was a solid to fine or even good game... just a poor Sly/Monkey Island game. The three major issues I've had with it: 1) Imho it should've had more with Sly AND Carmelite and Sly's time at Interpol. AT THE VERY LEAST the intro should've explored that, and how Sly grew bored with it. Or a bonus story/comic for the game. 2) The cliffhanger ending. I think no explanation needed. 3) Penelope's heel turn. It's just unsatisfying and came basically outta nowhere. I PERSONALLY would've used it as a set up for Sly 5... IF SANZARU HAD ATTEMPTED TO FOLLOW UP ON SLY 4! I personally would've had her be hypnotized... by none other than Clockwerk. Reveal that Clockwerk uploaded his brain into the internet before Sly 1. Despite the destruction o fhte hate chip, Clockwerk's eye is still round in 4... Clockwerk sent a mail to Bentley, trying to get Bentley as tool for his revenge, but got Penelope instead. Hell, reveal that she didn't immediately murder Bentley etc. BECAUSE of her feelings for him. sure, It's not the most creative solution, but imho better than "Penelope always had been a sociopathic, gold digging schemer!" Bonus point: Carmelita's outfit. Her 2 and 3 outfit was awesome... the outfit in 4 with the mini skirt? Meh... (I also think that hers and Sly's aged designs didn't quite fit... they just look... off? I guess...)

I’ve said the SAME thing about TiT on Reddit. It’s a canonical/non-canonical take on what a “sly 4” would be since it’s a game based on Canon that Sanzaru didn’t create/write. It’s very nicely done as a game but not great as a continuation of the original canon games. I wish it was done differently or Sucker Punch worked in tandem with Sanzaru Games for them to make something closer to the trilogy, but with the same quality as it plays presently. Also, all of those plot points would’ve been great to see; I wish for a sly 4 they could make a game about the origins of Thiefnet and the Corruption at Interpol and some how tie both into storylines about Sly, The Gang, and Carmelita, and also introduce new cops and other international thieves.

@@crashingbasher7376 define "regular". Especially since 1) she works for (a fantasy version of) Interpol (with far greater jurisdiction) and 2) isn't some low level policewoman. In 3 she had the authority to hire mercenaries.

I'm surprised you didn't touch on how rushed the final chapter feels. It's essentially just a bunch of boss fights with a bit of normal gameplay sprinkled in between. The Cooper vault is great, but otherwise, definitely a rushed chapter. Also, the amount of damage Dr. M can take is insane. Feels a bit contrived, like it's written like that just to make the chapter have more stuff to do by nearly making him invincible. I mean, you fight him while he controls a monster on land, underwater, in the skies, with Bentley and Murray, and then finally with Sly, but he just takes all that damage like a champ. Even at the end cutscene, during Dr. M's final moments, he's beating his chest, full of vitality. All that felt a bit strange to me, like they were struggling to find things to do in that chapter. Just some analysis on my part.
