Regarding this, how does Priestley present Mr Birling as a capitalist? Throughout the play, Priestley presents Mr Birling as a clear representation of the patriarchal upper class. This reflects a lack of social responsibility and justice in his character, and demonstrates Priestley's disdain for Capitalist beliefs and society. Similarly, what does Mr Birling represent? Mr Birling represents the greed, self-importance and stupidity of capitalism. It is symbolic that his first line - the opening line of the play - is an order to his servant regarding the serving of port. Similarly, it is asked, why does Priestley use Mr Birling? Priestley uses Mr Birling as a symbol to represent the selfishness and arrogance of capitalists in Edwardian society. Priestley wanted his audience to dislike Mr Birling and to see him as a fool. By rejecting the attitudes held by Mr Birling, Priestley's audience would lead a more responsible, socialist life. Why is Mr Birling important in an inspector calls? Mr Birling is a business man whose main concern is making money. This is what is most important to him and he comes across as being greedy. "we may look forward to the time when Crofts and Birlings are no longer competing but are working together - for lower costs and higher prices."

The videos based on set texts (like this one) will be useful whichever exam board someone is on. Not all boards examine context for each text though, so you’d need to check that.

The younger generation like Sheila and Eric, who are also rich as they are the children of Mr and Mrs Birling- would have shifted towards a socialist view as they are younger and more influential whereas the older generation are more stubborn and fixed in their backwards ways. If you think about it, the only way that change can be done is by having both money and a strong belief. Priestley knows he has the backing of the poor people, because the socialists view is to their advantage. What he needs, is the support of the younger generation who will soon take over, like Sheila and Eric, as they are the ones who actually have the power to make change and an impact. Priestley is counting on the rich, younger generation's empathy and moral principles to do what's right, and become a socialists as even though this doesn't directly influence them, Priestley's main theme throughout the whole play is the concept of social responsibility, which is emphasised through the inspector's lesson to the Birlings and Gerald

Mr Birling talks about political business in Act 1 to his daughter, son and future son-in-law and ends off by saying that they ‘don’t guess-’ they’ve ‘had experience-’ and they ‘know’. This is ironic because during his ‘speech’ he says that the ‘Germans don’t want war’ and that the ‘Titanic is absolutely unsinkable’. However, the audience and readers know that he’s imprecise and the Germans did contribute in both the latter wars and the Titanic did sink killing many people. During Act 1 Mr Birling talks to Gerald and Eric and Mr Birling mentions how clothes for a woman is ‘not only something to make ‘em look prettier- but- well, a sort of sign or token of self-respect’. Eric ‘eagerly’ claims that he remembers making both his father and Gerald a bit suspicious of him. Therefore, this could be a foreshadowing of Act 3 where he confesses that he had been drunk and consequently impregnating the unfortunate Eva Smith. From the time Inspector Goole is inquiring till the end where he leaves, it is noted that he knows what had happened to Eva Smith. Despite saying that he’d ‘like some information’ it was he, himself who had been giving all the information with the suspects to prove his points and to show the others that what he says is really the hard truth. Priestley here attempts to make all the characters confess and feel guilt in them. On the other hand, Mr Birling, Mrs Birling and Gerald Croft represent those who will not repent, and Mr Birling represents those who hide their mistakes from the public to make himself a ‘hard-headed practical man of business’. that is what i got from this thank you

Just watched the movie tonight, and "contrived" was the correct summation. Neither my wife or I figured Goole was who he said he was, though the supernatural explanation (Priestley's attempt at Dickens) was unsatisfactory. Him being her father would have made more sense. And the socialist preaching seems silly. If their needs to be preaching, the writer hasn't made the point through character and plot. Two out of five stars for the flicker.

Sheila is a lone character. We have no information about her family life- for all we know she could be an orphan. She's so helpless and vulnerable to the point where she literally placed her trust with a stranger (Gerald) because he protected her from a drunken man who was harassing her and offered her dinner...he protected her from one predator only to take advantage of her himself. The difference between Eric and Gerald's use of Eva is separated by a thin line of difference- because while Eric was only drunk and felt the need to fulfill his desires regardless of her consent- Gerald weaseled his way into her heart and manipulated her emotionally. He made her fall in love with him only to view her in a degrading manner since she is from the poorer, working class- and while she knew he'd never marry her; the fact that he speaks of himself as though he were a hero who came and saved the damsel in distress is disgusting- when in fact, Gerald and Mr Birling had arguably the worst impact on Eva Smith than the rest. When Eva smith asked for a slight pay rise to make ends meet, Mr Birling refused- even though he not only had the luxury to do so, but also, later on in the play Eric steals 50 pounds from his office to provide for Eva, and Birling is rich enough to not even notice that this large sum of money has been stolen. Mr Birling degraded Eva Smith and caused her to devalue herself as unworthy of a few extra 5 shillings, and fired her from employment- making matters even worse that they were to begin with. Shortly after, when Sheila's petty behavior and jealousy towards Eva Smith causes her to once again, be fired from her job- Eva Smith soon turns to prostitution. The main and first impact that led Eva Smith down that path was due to Mr Birling who made it clear that the poor are not worthy of life- let alone self respect and dignity. The highest form of violation and dominion of power than one human can enforce an another, is portrayed through rape. It is symbolic that a character as pathetic as Eric- a man who is an unstable alcoholic with a diluted sense of both morality and priciple- but is protected by material wealth and rich status- is the one to rape Eva Smith and force her to carry his bastard of a child. Eric's actions have forced Eva Smith to almost be infected by his evil, devolved and backwards nature and desires- as Priestley showcases that all the upper class does, is take advantage of the poor, working class. Any women could be Eva Smith, thats why she went by so many names such as Daisy Renton- what Priestley tried to show is that Capitalists will do anything they please in their power, even if it is to rape those who are at an disadvantage of their rights, simply because they can. The theme of social responsibility is emphasised throughout the whole play through the lesson taught by the inspector- who is Priestley's mouthpiece- in order to encourage and influence the younger generation to stop accepting the treatment of the Capitalists and be open to accept the new and open minded socialist movements; as a rebellion towards the older generation and causing an up rise of justice. Eva was taken advantage of and stripped off her right when she was underpaid at her first job under Mr Birling, and this idea is suggested in multiple ways by every character at some point in the play- topped off with Eric at last committing the violent crime of rape itself. Priestley purposely makes the character of Eva Smith suicide by chugging down bleach- of all other ways of comitting suicide- as it symbolises her attempt at cleansing herself of all this sin and poor life she has been living.
