But a good tip for getting a good grade in inspector calls is using prologue (stage directions) for each character as it will boost up your grade. Eg for Eric you can use the stage direction “half shy, half assertive” which basically suggests that Eric Doesn’t like to express his emotions so therefore he represses them.

"half shy, half assertive" - prologue (stage directions-describing Eric) "shy" - adjective, connotes uncertainty and indecisiveness - suggests lack of confidence and maturity "assertive" on the other hand contrasts with shy - furthermore suggesting confidence and dominance. To conclude - Priestly uses contrasting adjectives -view Eric pessimistically in order to show the capitalist patriarchal society is not trustworthy. - furthermore encourages the audience to reject the capitalist ideas that Eric appears to be representing. Hope this helps :)

I had this thought that maybe Mr Birling and Mrs Birling could represent Adam and Eve. They are the older generation and have committed sins ( the deadly sins). They do not accept responsibility and therefore will be sent out of their heaven which is their wealth and social class. Because they have committed this sin, perhaps original sin, will affect the next generations to come which it does. The younger generation, Shiela and Eric are affected by the original sin and therefore also commit sins. However, they have learnt to accept responsibility and therefore will be forgiven by perhaps Inspector Goole- a god like character- and consequently will achieve paradise: wealth and remain high or even higher in the class system. I don't know what I just wrote lol but it seems to make sense in my head...

Another thing about Edna. In the play you never really hear the lower classes talking and defending themselves like you never hear Eva talk. But having Edna on stage dutifully following the orders of her social superiors provides a visual aid for the audience and they can clearly see and understand themselves that the lower classes aren't treated well.

When he says “The Germans don’t want war”, there is no heightening of the irony. This is done as an ominous and solemn reminder to the people (Most of who at the time would know someone who fought in ww1 or ww2 - especially in the USSR where it was first performed as well as back home in the UK) of how absolutely wrong he is, as well as how devastating men such as he would be when ww1 did come around. They left men to their fates in a war they were certain the other side didn’t want. This expertly gets the same point across as with the titanic, but uses the context to its advantage to not need emphasis to do this.

Need help on a character analysis of Mr birling? Regarding this, how does Priestley present Mr Birling as a capitalist? Throughout the play, Priestley presents Mr Birling as a clear representation of the patriarchal upper class. This reflects a lack of social responsibility and justice in his character, and demonstrates Priestley's disdain for Capitalist beliefs and society. Similarly, what does Mr Birling represent? Mr Birling represents the greed, self-importance and stupidity of capitalism. It is symbolic that his first line - the opening line of the play - is an order to his servant regarding the serving of port. Similarly, it is asked, why does Priestley use Mr Birling? Priestley uses Mr Birling as a symbol to represent the selfishness and arrogance of capitalists in Edwardian society. Priestley wanted his audience to dislike Mr Birling and to see him as a fool. By rejecting the attitudes held by Mr Birling, Priestley's audience would lead a more responsible, socialist life. Why is Mr Birling important in an inspector calls? Mr Birling is a business man whose main concern is making money. This is what is most important to him and he comes across as being greedy. "we may look forward to the time when Crofts and Birlings are no longer competing but are working together - for lower costs and higher prices."

Soon after his entrance, the audience start to realise that the Inspector's investigation focuses on the surprising links between different events and people. The Inspector initiates this idea of connections through anadiplosis; by repeating 'what happened to her afterwards' at the end of one clause and the beginning of the next, the sentence structure itself cleverly emphasises how the content of these statements is inextricably connected and leads on from one another. Next, he memorably summarises this concept with the metaphorical image of ‘A chain of events'. The concrete noun ‘chain' refers to an object that embodies physical linking. Even more so that that, however, it connotes heaviness and imprisonment, perhaps inferring that the links between various 'events' involving the Birlings and Eva Smith could be what weighs down the entire family. If anyone needs it

Great video. At 14:20, the fact that [Birling stops to listen] to the doorbell is an example of irony as he doesn't have the patience or the sense to listen to any of the other characters. This further elevates Priestley's campaign for a socialist mindset.

I would recommend people read brave new world by Aldous Huxley as an allegory for what might happen if the inspector's ideology goes to far - 'everyone belongs to everyone else' is a motif within brave new world. Often in analysis of AIC, the inspector is seen as being completely right and good - and as a proxy for Priestley this is understandable; but it must be remembered all things are best in balance.

22:34 Mr Birling has a similar attitude towards edna as he does in the first act, showing how he has not changed throughout the play in his attitudes because he still treats the working class with the same harshness and condescendation as he did at the start of the play.

I hope it’s Edna. Because Edna is bae. Edna fan club.

Also she’s the only character without a last name implying less respect, even Eva has a last name, showing that even though they may be invisible in one way or another they are still there and they are still people. The stage directions show her milling around serving the Birlings implicitly suggesting to the audience that the capitalist middle class, like it or not, are reliant on the working class for their ‘cheap labour’ meaning they are reliant on theses people and so must be responsible for them as their benefit is for the benefit of everyone. Etc

thank you...This may present as a bit off topic, but i am thinking of writing a mass open letter to many in the regulatory / justice / police system - all of whom i have contacted in relation to fraud and theft by professional executors from my fathers estate. The mass disinterest, non action (or even protectionism) by those responsible in the so-called 'justice system' for calling (thieving) 'professional executors' to account brings this wonderful play to mind often. I may title the email to all those who have responsibilities but have done nothing 'An inspector Calls' !
