Nice and simple message.. The compassion and the awareness of our ignorance torwads the light of Consciousness is really the most powerful forces in a human being!! I have a simple question here.. Compassion and forgiveness can only feel some people, closed in monastery, or it's birthright of everyone? And more important is, if can share your compassion with a thief, with the Monks are so afraid of WOMEN, and they don't allow them into their lives? Does a simple women can be help and transformed? Why they never tried to teach and help a woman? This is real Religious Compassion, to see everyone like a human being, without any discrimination at all!! Blessings and love!!

The story is about compassion. Despite the motivations, the compassion moved the traveler, as he was a traveler, and it's his nature to move. It means that just like compassion changed the thief, it also changed the traveler, and the light warmed his heart as well. If we wanna get specific, we could say the traveler lied out of some resentment, or we could say the thief succumbed in a moment of weakness, but either way, we come to the same conclusion. Even if the thief succumbed, a single item is easier to forgive, and a relapse is the moment that needs forgiveness the most, to prevent a downward spiral. Even if the traveler lied, or was mistaken, it takes great courage to retract that sort of accusation, especially if it gets out of hand like it did. How embarrassing it must have been, had he lied; how compassionate and forgiving he must have been, had he not. This story was simple compared to the one about the Monk who thought he was a mountain or a stream, that one took some searching and I still probably need to go back and journal about it, this one, even if you poke holes in it it still has logic.

I don't get it. A traveler accused the reformed thief of stealing from him but dropped the charges after seeing how much the monks believed in him. I know it doesn't affect the lesson of the story but why the heck is the traveler accusing the reformed thief? Is he lying or is the thief still really up to his ways and getting away with it because people believe in him now?

The thief stole from the traveler before meeting the monks, the traveler realized that the man who stole from him had changed and was no longer a threat, so forgave him.
