Cooool like this really helped me make a connection. I also realized that it goes perfectly with the fretboard beadgcf Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles Father. The 2 amd 5 of the target note are always the two notes before in beadgcf. Target B, the 2 is c and the 5 is F. Target D and the 2 is e and the 5 is A. They are also in line on the fretboard beadgcf shift when going from g string to b string

Man, I kind of stumbled across this video just a few minutes ago and it just so happens that I’m in the middle of a bit of a nice buzz… Most of the time this stuff, while it resonates it still kind of goes over my head when I try to put it into action. For some reason, I don’t know if you have a little buzz too but I feel connected and it’s kind of making sense like gangbusters…lol Hopefully all of this will stick and when I wake up tomorrow I can have some fun with it…🎉😊. II-V-I can also be thought of as V/V(five of five)-V-I. It can also be altered to a dominant 7th, borrowing from the V chord's key. this makes the resolution to V, and the following resolution to I, very powerful.

Hi Sean. I am new to guitar, I tried it many years ago; learnt some 1st position chords and a couple of songs and played around until i got bored of my limited understanding (those were pre youtube days) In recent years, I have learnt to play the piano and I understand music theory on the piano and a regular practice that I do is finding all the chords in each scale. Since picking up the guitar again 2 weeks ago; I am really trying to figure out where all the chords of each scale is and I'm struggling to find videos that go through this. This is the closest one that I have found to what I'm looking for. I don't want to spend months and months trawling through youtube videos as I have done with piano so the next thing I was planning on doing is drawing the fretboard out on a big sheet of paper and placing the notes on there. I can figure out where each note is based from the name of the string and how many steps there are to each note. I figure that if I do this I will then see the scale and chord patters emerging. It's only two weeks ago that I discovered that the guitar had both horizontal and vertical scales lol, anyway. I enjoy your videos, they are a little fast for me but I get what you're trying to teach and I really enjoy understanding the guitar beyond first position chords. I'm hoping that I'll grasp it all soon!!! All the best from Wales 🙂

I am obsessed with 251 and I just needed to hear what I heard tonight how you could move and change the focus or the asset or don’t remember now what you called it and when you changed and transposed a 251 to another chord in the scale. You literally made my day and if there is anything that you teach on your Udemy courses that resemble this lesson, please please reply to me …. Another good lesson from SD. I know there's a name/term for jumping keys while 2-5-1-ing it. Since I consider my guitar skills to be at the lower end of the Intermediate Level, I get a pass for not knowing what to call it. What really helps me to understand this concept is having a "Nashville Number System Chord Chart" tacked to the wall in front of me. A quick look at the chart is faster than counting notes on my fingers (and I don't keep dropping my pick).

Yes but a dim or half dim chord is so much more colourful, like a dominant 7 on steroids. Really useful in blues or jazz and country music, strongly pulls to resolve to the 1 chord, great ending for a big outro.

Thanks for the lesson. When going to a 2-5-1, how do you decide if it should be a minor or a major?
@seaneverett75765 ай бұрын
In a major key, the "guide" is 1-4-5 is major, 2-3-6 is minor and 7 is diminished. (C, Dmin, Emin, F, G, Am, Bdim) You dive a bit deeper like major7 key, now 1-4 is maj7, 5 is dom7, 2-3-6 is min7 and 7 is min7b5. (CMaj7, Dmin7, Emin7, FMaj7, G7, Amin7, Bmin7b5). The "guide" changes yet again if you're talking a minor key. I won't break that one down just to avoid a long novel for a reply lol. You gotta remember the step pattern of the major scale "w-w-h-w-w-w-h" when making these, the key of C was chosen because no #/b within C following the scale so super easy, just letters. So something like key of E Major, you have E, gotta go a whole step (two half steps, 1 half step is F, another is F#, repeat...) You wind up with E (1: start), F#min (2: whole), G#min (3: whole), A (4: half), B (5: whole), C#min (6: whole), D#Dim (7: whole) Back to E (1: half).

Great video! Thanks for reminding me how almost intermedium I am, this really explains well how to use a ii-V-I without too much jazzy cork sniffing. However, because i’m feeling pedantic, when going to the Am you chose Bdim (ok that’s part of C major) but then you play a E7 (not in C major)? I get Bdim to Em(7) to Am to stay within C major or Bm to E7 to Am to keep the ii-V vibe but.. mixing it up, is that legal! Is the chord voicing choice just artistic license or i’m missing something? I loved this video i’m even shopping for a new watch now.
@krystilynn34035 ай бұрын
I think he changed the tonal centre with Am. Bdim is the second degree of Am and E is the fifth degree of Am.
@iforget87165 ай бұрын
@@krystilynn3403 I might just be thick but wouldn’t the V of a the natural minor chord (in this case Am) be a minor chord as well (Em)?
@singlespeed5 ай бұрын
You can use EM7 but it doesn't have the same pull back to the one. There is some simple theory to help understand why it work. Basically, some notes of the chords walk toward the next chord chromatically. When your ear hears the G# it really really wants to hear the A follow it. G to A won't have quite the same pull. You can also look at the movement of all the other notes between the chords that are the same or move a half step or a whole step. You can also skip the 2 and just do a V-I which is good to mix in if you are trying to change your tone center several times.

The numbers system just slows me down ... because its already in my head... if I try to think of numbers its simply just an extra process it takes for my brain to compute.. bit then again, I have always played by ear .. and I know where I'm starting , where I'm going, and where it's naturally going to end ... I've studied the circle of fifths enough to know that .. and practiced enough changing keys of every song I try ... Number system to me is like learning morse code by having to look at the dots and dashes written down .. Learn it by sound and you simply skip the process of converting those dots and dashes in your head... and it breaks the speed barrier and the rythm becomes the letter.. Take the time to learn the circle of 5ths , practice it .. and you'll get better without boggling your brain... I dont think of anything music theory wise .. I forget what key I'm in sometimes because I just naturally go there ...and spend my time working out how I'm going to start my solo in my head .. the solos the same way .. no thinking about notes , chord progression, ect ... Yes , the Nashville number system is a quick way to learn a song .. but if you want to be able to burn up the fretboard without even having to think about it...don't learn the number system.. because it's so hard to unlearn something that you already have learned... Now it you just want to be an intermediate player like he said he was shooting for.. .. yes take the quick fix and learn the number system... which is ok for a person who is more interested in vocals than playing..
