The FBI does a lot of good that doesn’t get covered much at all, seemingly only the bad things nowadays make the news. It’s actually kinda sad… here they are working in the background helping police agencies across the country find criminals (like murderers), foiling plots, and saving lives… yet a good chunk of the country resents their very existence.

NGL, there was a small part of me that was hoping the FBI agent would turn out to be Frank Doyle, the guy who would help supply the Mythbusters with some of the craziest explosives, including hundreds of pounds of ANFO to just blow shit up for funsies. The Unabomber case was one of the ones high up on his list of achievements when he started working with them.

Evidence: b0mbs are made of metal FBI: maybe he’s a machinist! Evidence: tries blowing up plane FBI: maybe he’s an airline mechanic! I wonder if he wrote an address in crayon if they’d have thought he was a kindergarten teacher. I thought the FBI was supposed to be S-tier profilers.
@twenty-fifth42011 ай бұрын
These are not inherently illogical guesses. The first is obvious, you can make a bomb easier if you have stuff like welding irons, can work with fuses and electricity. The second is a little more blurry, but if you try to blow up a plane, ideally you should know the vulnerable parts of the plane and place it where it would avoid detection.
@Kovac2211 ай бұрын
I mean, it wasn't because it was metal, it was because of the skill required. And they logically assumed a plane mechanic would have A. experience with tools and B. a grudge with airlines.
@firefly983811 ай бұрын
You'd be shocked how stupid some of these investigators are. Remember we don't actually live in a meritocracy. Lots of people get federal jobs because of who they know, or some requirement on a piece of paper or "degree" that says oh this person is suppose to be smart.
@Buerfrumhell11 ай бұрын
I mean, if you leave out key information then of course these assumptions will sound stupid. Hindsight is 20/20 man. It wasnt just "These bombs are metal". The bombs actually included wood, and were made entirely by hand, Ted didnt buy vital pieces from department stores, he welded them himself. Its actually a quite logical thinking process to believe these literally home made bombs were created by an intelligent machinist. Your second point is so illogical. They believed he was an airline mechanic for many reasons. I mean, if a dude is sending bombs to Airlines multiple times in a row, wouldnt the logical assumption be he has some type of grudge with that airline? Or that airline has done him wrong in some way? Not just any person could create a bomb as well made as Ted, someone with relative machine intelligence had to be behind these bombings, an airline mechanic is a perfectly reasonable assumption. Especially when you consider how LITTLE leads they had to go from. Investigations start somehere, and when youre dealing with a 170 iq person, investigations get much more difficult. This is also before modern technology, ligten the fuck up bro. Like god damn, at least we aint scared to open packages in the modern day lmfao.@@firefly9838
@heyspookyboogie64411 ай бұрын
@@Buerfrumhell making things by hand and doing home woodworking, welding, etc was extremely common in that timespan. And just because the internet wasn’t much of a thing doesn’t mean normal, non-genius people didn’t have access to adequate information. If anything they had better access. Libraries with books on how to make your own machine tools, etc have been around for a very long time and don’t require modern tech/ special materials. And many materials he could have used were far less regulated (and far cheaper) than they are today. I don’t think it’s illogical to see a pattern of someone attacking one target and assuming there’s a personal connection to that particular target. My comment was about the trend step after step of making contradictory or unrelated assumptions, or assumptions based on things that were common, for the same reason and not even considering it could be something more symbolic even if they couldn’t possibly know what. If someone attacks someone with a 2x4 you don’t just assume they’re a carpenter and start investigating carpenters. Yes, Ted was very intelligent, but nothing he did was particularly intelligent aside from spacing things out.
