UPDATE August 27, 2021: The five years have gone by in a flash due to my own personal life issues. During this time, Tony has cycled in and out of being incarcerated two or three times. One incident was at a half-way house where he became paranoid about the manager and left on bad terms, violating his terms of probation. He is currently back in, after he took a joy ride in a mini-cooper he saw idling and double parked in Westwood. He drove it around West LA and Hollywood then parked it at a 7/11 and turned it off not realizing he did not have the electronic key to turn it back on. He asked the 7/11 operators to all the police which they did not do. So he slept a while in the car then in the morning flagged down some police. This was during 2020. He is still awaiting a court hearing and is currently at Norwalk Metropolitan Hospital being "restored to competency to stand trial". I'll post another update here sometime before the end of 2021.

Thank you for your thoughts Lacy Kate Wilkinson. This video was made long ago but yet, I did take my brother to lunch afterwards. In the weeks following he became very delusional and ended up vandalizing some property. He has been incarcerated twice since then and is now in a psychiatric hospital. He is very coherent (on meds) and stable but a bit manic. He may be released back to freedom in a few weeks or months. I'll post an update soon to a blog I wrote about his situation (see: goo.gl/dPyTBN).

My brother-in-law is very similar in talking and evading questions. He’s never had an official diagnosis or taken any meds. He swears there is nothing wrong, that everyone else has it wrong about him. The CIA are everywhere and he is the Target! So far as we know, he’s not a danger to himself or others. We hope it stays that way in his best interests and for others sakes as well!

My question is very specific and I so need an answer. For those who know this diagnosis personally.... What is the foundation or cornerstone of this diagnosis? Do you believe his speech and thought is disorganised? Does your brother have a self care deficit and if so in what way? Can he prepare food and feed self on daily basis? Think ahead for food and hygiene? I have no one else to ask.

I feel schizophrenia is like being emotionally excrutiatingly sensitive of everything and having real troubles in discerning between things. Mixed up. But their sensitivity is a gift to themselves and the world if one learns (with help when needed) to heal oneself (without medication) as schizophrenics are natural rebels towards authrorities as they sense the dishonesty in current established authorities who are insensitive to them and also describe medication that hinders their ability to heal themselves.
@dennisallard120

e3ovuziotica My brother becomes completely unable to function when off his meds. I agree he is excrutiatingly sensitive of the ills of society, but that alone does not get anywhere near explaining his thought processes and behavior.

Dennis, I would have to agree here just because when the situation is acute (uncontrollable) so meds can be useful on critical situations. Their long term effects (side-effects, changing brain chemistry all the time by changing the meds. I would think the amount matters a lot too. Fewer the better) are not good at all and alternative information about this would be wise to research. It is a lot of work. Waning off the drugs is difficult and surely dangerous when not done properly. Being in nature is good, somewhere where there are no other people and machines. Animals too. All the best, my original comment was a bit too emotional as each situation and individual is different (and delicate).

I work on the psychiatric unit of a nursing facility, and the majority of the residents have a schizophrenia diagnosis. I am very curious as to why medication refusal is so common with this population. Most of the residents who become well enough to return to the community eventually end up back at the nursing home because they stopped taking their meds. We even have issues with some long term residents. I am really curious as to why that is so common.

As someone who is a Paranoid Schizophrenic. I could tell you there are many reasons people stop taking there medications. For me the longest i have gone with out taking my medication since i finally accepted that I am a schizophrenic is barley 10 days and that was because I ran out of pills. As of lately I have been wanting to stop taking my medication because the medication has side effects i have been on many type of anti psychotics and they all have side effects mainly for me is I sleep 12 to 16 hours a day and I forget alot of things and at times I dont feel like im really me anymore. when i recently went 10 days with out my medication I felt free agian free to think how i want to and free to be me agian. I know there are many other reasons people don't take there med's such as Paranoia and lack of understanding about there illness. I recently watched a documentary on recovering with out medication and it is possible to recover with out medication. So it's something I am looking in to. I hope this helps understand.

I got prescribed Abilify, it made me so uncomfortable like the boundaries of my skin dissolved into bugs or something... It made me feel 5x more fucked up than without them. It was for OCD and it just made my addictions worse. Also though as someone who is developing signs of schizophrenia, and after looking at this guy (so sample size of 2), it seems like I share a common feeling of victimization with this guy, like nothing is his responsibility (paying for lunch/meds, respecting his brother), and I deceive my self a lot which it seems like this guy does too. I could totally see his issue being that he is so grandiose in order to deny his inner truth to people. As for medication it would make sense that they could deny it because they know deep down they don't really need it, they just don't want to take responsibility for that truth so they become a victim. I.e. "i'm too messed up I'll never survive out there waahhh pick me up mommy". I don't know what other schizophrenics are like so maybe just ignore this.

I don't have SZ but I don't like how many of the side effects make me feel. I go from normal with some mania or depression, to being tired and hungry all the time. Also, some of the side effects can really do harm to your body. Also the medication I was taken could have killed me, maybe not but it warned against people with certain medical history to not take that medication. I didn't even know that till I got my perscription and read the side effects. It also took a couple days to get my diabetic diet fixed, by that time the stuff they gave me seemed like crap compared to what I was eating before that..Sometimes people do need to be on medication, sometimes not, some people should be on it all the time. I think doctors and staff need to listen to the patients more. Tho I do understand to a point, it can be hard to get people to open up or behave at times. I went in last time because of so much stress in my life, and when I came out I decided it was better than being in the hospital. I got a restraing order on my ex on my own, with some help, no one in the hospital would help me get away from my ext and even got on my case about it without hearing my side of the story. Someday I'd like to help those in the pych ward when I am ready to deal with people...

No, I'm not schizophrenic. However, LSD induces states of temporary psychosis which is a symptom of schizophrenia. Obviously I will never completely understand what it's like, but again someone who's tried large doses of LSD probably has experienced a state somewhat similar to it.
@Swurveitup
@Swurveitup 9 жыл бұрын
In my first and only trip, I took 4 tabs of LSD, and smoked some pot roughly 2 hours into the trip. After I smoked, the trip (which was already to the extreme) took a turn for the worst. I experienced some things (delusions, and hallucinations) that have changed me forever, definitely for the worst. I even momentarily depersonalized while gazing into the abyss of my own mind while staring in awe at my bathroom mirror. I heard a man in his 40s laughing, I saw a woman in the CIA standing outside of my window whistling in a tune that was sending me secret messages and rewiring my brain as a mind experiment being performed by a part of the intelligence community so secretive they're not even classed as part of the U.S. Government. I have been hearing footsteps behind me everytime i go outside, and the lady in the CIA consistently comes to my window to whistle the tunes that are sending me deeper into the abyss. My family is working for them (unknowingly), they are being manipulated and controlled, they blackout and spy on me at all times of the day. I know these are delusions and not real at this point in time, but there are times when I'm not so sure. Then there are the times when im 100% positive. For the past few weeks I've been trapped in a hell that is inexplicable, and I think it was more than likely induced by LSD, and heavy marijuanas use prior to that. I've not seen a doctor or told anyone, out of fear my last feeling of sanity will be stripped from me when they institutionalize me.

I realized this morning after a phone call with my brother that I have not updated the column where I write about his situation (goo.gl/dPyTBN) in nearly four years. Hence I should add a chapter that explains how my brother was convicted and incarcerated for keying a car and, subsequently, making threatening phone calls using a phone in the psychiatric hospital where he was being held while being "restored to competency to stand trial" for the vandalism case. I will add that chapter in the near future. For now... Briefly, my brother has been incarcerated now for almost four years after being convicted on charges of vandalism and criminal threats. He has never harmed a soul but he's a big guy and can be intimidating. He is in a special ward in the prison(s) where he is housed and receives meds and counseling. I communicate with him by phone from time to time so can gauge his state of mind. For many months he will be very stable, coherent, and seem able to discuss his own condition. Yet, at times over the past few years, he will digress and seem unable to perceive his situation. He was due to be released last week but was instead transferred up to Atascadero State Hospital (ASH). He called me this morning. From the phone conversation, I realize that he is currently somewhat manic and has very limited perception of his own condition. He was at ASH once before during a previous incarceration and when released back to liberty at that time, was very perceptive and insightful about his state of mind. I hold out some hope that that could happen again, but it's rough. I don't know where he'll end up if a way cannot be found to keep him taking his meds. He has two strikes. A future third felony strike (on simple vandalism charges) would send him up back prison for much of the rest of his life..

The brother is an AO. What you're doing is treating your brother as if he is "normal". They are NOT normal. Your questioning and implicating behavior does NOTHING to help them relax. The best thing for you to do? Become a "YES MAN", make sure he takes his meds and bring him food. It will help him relax.

He is unable to do that now since Internet access is not available to patients who are incarcerated at ASH. He also would like to do a follow up interview which will also be done sometime in the summer of 2015.

I am sorry to see or read tell your brother has been incarcerated. as one woman said my heart also goes out to you. i to suffer with a brother who suffers more from the brain disorder schizophrenia. please forgive me in the fact that I quickly judged your interaction with your brother as being rude and not very understanding or empathetic. I apologize for this because for further looking into this and reading your update I realize you are frustrated and trying to protect him and wake him up into reality. I remember those days. now sometimes I lose his reality with him my brother as if it's real and we live in harmony that's more than before. I realize I can do this now because he is not violent or dangerous to himself or others as he was before The Amazing drugs clozaril. but changed my brother's life like night and day. my brother has knocked me tooth out, threatened to kill me and hated me when he became symptom Matic of schizophrenia. it was painful to see and it was also scary for me. it was quite scary for him for us to see him and wonder if he might not end up n jail or prison I think God yes not so far and I do not think he will as I used to worry. we can live together now in harmony for the last 10 years. change is due to clozaril it gave him his personality and life back. So many people don't know about this pharmaceutical drug or how to get this pharmaceutical drugs without someone advocating for them. it helps a massive amount of people who suffer from schizophrenia. my heart truly goes out to you and I pray for you and your brother. as I'm sure you sound like a caring man and I apologize for my quick judgement and I actually flag you listening to your video. I am so sorry please forgive me my only suggestion is to write the judge a few times to try and enlighten him and assume he knows nothing of the disorder schizophrenia. Does medication completely fix him? After not being able to answer the question straight, he finally admitted to not taking his pills when he was locked up. He clearly needs supervision and needs to have his tongue thoroughly checked for hiding pills so he doesn't spit them out like he admitted. Is there anyway you guys can perhaps mix the drugs in pudding or ice cream? We did that with my grandmother who suffered from dementia.

Yea... Medicate someone without their knowledge . Are you aware of the side effects these drugs can cause ? Many people who suffer from schizophrenia stop taking these " meds ". Perhaps they have good reasons .
@dennisallard120
@dennisallard120 3 жыл бұрын
Chandler, no medication does not "completely fix him". According to my brother, even when he is on meds, he still has some delusions and paranoia, although at a much reduced level. There is no known cure of his condition. Also, one one of the reasons my brother Tony does not like meds is that, as he puts it, it dulls his thinking. And,, drugs like Haldol cause him to have tremors in his hands. Not fun being afflicted by whatever it is that happened to my brother 35 years ago now. Tony is currently incarcerated for somewhat minor offense involving taking a car that was not his for a joy ride. Due to his repeat offenses, ,he ends up being arrested and staying a jail or a mental institution frequently. I talk with him quite a bit by phone, every week or two. On meds his is completely coherent and cogent and does not go into raves like he does when off meds. The next time he is release back to society I still hope he will consider doing a follow up to this interview of 2009, kind of a 12 years later thing.

Yepp, this will happen if they refuse to take their meds. At least he's in a place where he is forced to take his meds. Someone like him should have always been on a monthly shot. I'd talk to the court to get him either monthly shots or long term implanted medication.

In the past my ability to "talk to the court" as you suggest has been nearly non-existant. You can't just go to a judge and talk to the judge. You have to go to the DA or the Public Defender and that only during a trial. I will try to contact his parole officer when he gets out though.

Why don't you ask your brother's Psychiatrist about the monthly injection he can get? He won't have to worry about meds for a whole month...
@dennisallard120
@dennisallard120 10 жыл бұрын
He normally does not give permission for me to speak with his psychiatrists. However, since he has just been transferred to ASH and a recent phone call with him tells me he is decompensating, I am going to make an effort to communicate with them (as I have sometimes been able to do in the past). As for injections, I believe that requires a court order. In any case, he has seen over 50 different psychiatrists over the years. I assume that most of them are competent. Personally, I think that when someone such as my brother gets to the state he is in, there should be legal means to require them to receive medication. That is harsh but I have been driven to that belief by the events involving my brother over the past 25 years.

My brother is OK with this being public and if you wish to write to him at Atascadero State Hospital, I will forward his address to you with my brother's permission. He has stated that he would like to correspond with anyone interested.

this man is on to something meds can be shit. However abilify is the best one. So hes on to something. Abilify is way better than the other meds. Its unreal. It hits on dopamine and serotonin receptors. And its a partial agonist. So its supposed to combat negative symptoms. More so than other ones. I also think it has alpha 1 antagonist properties to help regulate mood. The other meds can offer something different though.........everyones unique.

The interviewer being the brother doesnt really understand his brother, and is stuck within his own ideas about how a person should respond and behave. The fact is he is irritating this man. This man is perfectly fine and appears to be of no threat to anyone, and clearly understands his constitutional rights to answer questions he wants and elude questions he doesn't. He's not under any obligation to this man and his responses are all within his rights. You cant force someone to take medication, it's fucked up. ya he's a little quirky, but think about this he's not pestering you, he's not trying to force you to take medication, I have no doubt that you don't understand what the medication is or what it actually does to him. Nobody is forcing you to take meds. Getting off powerful medications like these is difficult. all the while people trying to force you to act/behave a certain way. You can't expect someone to be normal. There are major adjustment periods inbetween getting on, adjusting to, and getting off of meds. And once you've been experienced the level of malnutrition this man has from being in jail for so long. there becomes almost no hope that anyone will ever help you to regenerate. You are a fucking asshole for treating this man the way. You could have taken a different approach to helping your brother. imo you're just a crazy as you think he is. This is a good man, who's being and been violated by an unjust system, that will never allow him to recover. you dont fucking know what goes on behind those bars. and this is outrageous. I dont care what "vandalistic" charges this man has. He's acting out because no-one is paying him any kind of decency.

cleanhippy suggests that I do not "really understand" my brother. Yeah, right. I am one of the only people who has stuck by my brother for over 30 years since he had his break down. When off his meds he has threatened the lives of people and done enormous amounts of property damage, in addition to being nearly impossible to be around. Please read the blog associated with this post which includea excerpts of my brother's own writing and extensive summaries of what he and those close to him have been through all caused by his mental condition. The medicines he has taken off and on over the years have been the only thing that has enabled him to function in society. He is currently iincarcerated at Atascadero State Mental hospital on parole after having served four years on a second strike felony conviction of vandalism and criminal threats. He is now stable, on meds, and says he plans to continue taking the meds once he is released which may happen later this year.

See the URL posted above with this video (goo.gl/ExZQKm), read those blog posts, including writing by my own brother (goo.gl/Ev0RAA) and then you might understand better what we've tried and how little change there is that he will ever be "normal".

OK FORGET YOU JUST WATCHED THIS, you just finished downloading this new movie. you start to watch this movie, it is set in a parallel universe to our own around about the same time we live in. It is based largely on a guy that is trying to live and survive with the struggles of modern society but is also torn between his ideological beliefs and the world he born to. This is a world of deceit, post world war two the Zionists and the Freemasons had set about a 'new world order.' this wasn't about world domination it wasnt about controlling the hearts and minds of people world wide. It split the world into factions those 'who arent' , 'those who arent but know' , and those who 'are.' The Zionist and Freemasons had created a form of duel communication known as the game, where they spoke in two languages one of the verbal and one of the body. the guy is sitting there talking to his brother who he suspects of being a mason who is sent to spy on him. the masons label people' who aren't but know' about 'the game' as schizophrenic which the people 'who aren't' believe they have a mental illness when really they know about the biggest cover up in human history. 'THE GAME ,AND THE DUAL LANGUAGE'. now with that characters scenario in mind compare his reality to yours and imagine trying to have a conversation and him thinking you were a freemason.

Dennis Allard I wish i could film you, and then force you to take his meds for 3 months and then film you again and see how different you feel. At least he is being himself despite the paranoid delusion that you are a Freemason sending him signals though body language, you probably associate him with those anti capitalistic and communistic beliefs or thoughts he has as delusions when they are very real thoughts and feelings to him possibly. On the other hand i do see your perspective as i have bipolar 1 (thats with that occasional manic symptoms for the dummies) and some traits of schizo-effective disorder (which is symptoms which are close to schizophrenia but not as extreme) ; when im unwell im almost exactly like that and at the drop of a hat ill put my fists through the wall. It gets scary though when im like that because i cant make sense of whats going on you feel like im being persecuted, followed, watched, people can hear your thoughts etc. makes horror films look like the tali tubes. its your worst night mare come true and your frightened, intimidated and scared and the feelings thoughts dont stop/; you cant sleep because your so paranoid till the point you loose touch with all reality. and then you will either end up killing yourself if your not already dead or heavily sedated in a psychiatric hospital.
