Well, you can tell that they were going in the pop direction before Steve left. If you go listen to Wind and Wurthering, there are a few songs that sound a lot like the songs on Duke. Steve leaving just excelerated the process. If you really don’t like Genesis after Steve left (I personally am a fan of both 70s and 80s Genesis), I would suggest substituting Steve’s first four albums. They are close enough to pass as Genesis albums.

He's been one of my all time favourites for many years and I've seen him loads of times for the past 15 years and I went to see his Genesis Revisited / Spectral Mornings 40th show back in November 2019 in London was one of the best I have ever been to. Great interview Pete, thank you. I saw Genesis with Steve Hackett on 19th June 1977 at "Stadion am Bieberer Berg" in Offenbach, Germany. They where headlining a festival with Manfred Mann's Earthband, John Miles and German band Lake. AFTER the EARTHBAND and before Genesis there was heavy rain all over the place. During 'One for the Vine' from the beginning of the rhytmic/robotic part of the song, suddenly out of nowhere there was a big green laser in the nightsky, in some way for me it looked like big green spider moving on through the sky. Never seen something like that before. I will never forget this great Genesis show. It was just amazing spectacular. And Steve H. was there playing one of his last gigs for Genesis.

Great interview, Pete! Steve Hackett is one of my favorite musicians and personalities. He is a phenomenal guitarist, an amazing composer, and a kind gentleman. This is the first interview I have heard with Steve Hackett where he reveals the verbal "shakedown" he received from Genesis that he says caused him to leave. I could never understand or accept Steve Hackett's departure from Genesis after "Wind and Wuthering," a brilliant album, and the pinnacle of his career with Genesis, but now it makes sense. I never knew he was told not to expect to be able to expand his artistic ideas within their songwriting. It's amazing that Steve was comfortable enough with you to reveal this. This interview was a wonderful accomplishment and a highlight of your show. A job well done, Pete!!!

Pete..I’ve got to say that you are the best interviewer of musicians/vocalists I have ever enjoyed watching. Many of these type of interviews are almost painful to watch. Sometimes it’s so bad I just turn it off even if I’m a fan of the musician at hand, but Your questions are so great and you never interrupt the person you’re interviewing. It feels like everyone you’re questioning is a old friend. I watch just about everything you do and it’s all great but interviews are a talent that not many can do properly...so kudos to you.
