I’m smiling the whole interview. I discovered Steve and the Dixie Dregs in ‘81 and was an instant and lifetime fan of them and of Steve. He deserves every success he’s earned. Steve is a GIANT, and one of the best players, composers and writers in rock. Great interview Pete.

I heard them play that year in college in the quadrangle. Boy were they good! They didn't just play their instruments. In their hands the instruments entered into a lengthy and measured conversation and spoke great truths in many dialects. I know they didn't do songs with lyrics--and we know how biased radio was in those days. Too bad, so sad. I always wanted a Kansas/Dregs concert in the same venue.

I have to say that the most impressive thing about Steve Morse isn't his considerable musical vocabulary and massive knowledge of the guitar, but the honesty, integrity and humility he brings to the guitarist role. Steve Morse is the gentlemen of guitarists--very much like Steve Hackett in that regard. Deep Purple has had more than their share of great guitar players--but never one like this. He's not just a craftsman. He's a true artist in every respect. In fact Morse was the primary reason I joined the Purple train in the first place. I didn't realize until after he joined how great these musicians really were because of their off-stage antics in their early history--and the Blackmore wars with the band. It's amazing how one player can take a group of gifted musicians--and help them step up to the next level. For a band who was once great, this band is now incredible!

Interesting comment, but I disagree that SM helped Purple 'step up to the next level.' The legend, reputation and name of the band was made when Blackmore and Lord were members. The fact that most of the live set is still from the Mark 2 era endorses this.
@vincentbrightling1686
@vincentbrightling1686 4 жыл бұрын
@@grobbler1 I would make the point that Morse was the catalyst that allowed Purple to scale the musical heights once again. They were definitely deteriorating in the latter Blackmore days, which was a terrible shame. Yes, their reputation comes primarily from the Lord/Blackmore '70's period, but Morse's contribution has been incalculable since '94.
@grobbler1
@grobbler1 4 жыл бұрын
@@vincentbrightling1686 Whether studio recordings or live performances, again I disagree. In the latter Blackmore days - particularly the 1993 live shows - the performances were amongst the best of the reunion, due to the improvisation and sheer dynamics displayed night after night. Since Jon Lord left, the live shows lack improvisation and are effectively just the same show each night, albeit to a high standard. Steve Morse is a fine guitarist for his genre and apparently a genuinely nice guy, but he will always be just a 'replacement' for RB, as his roots are not the same as the original DP.

What a wonderful man Steve is! No ego, very articulate, and a gentleman. No swearing and quick to give others credit. And Pete, you're a great interviewer. You ask good questions and stay quiet, allowing your guest to fully answer the questions without interruption. Not many can do that. But of course, being such a Kansas nut, I was hoping that you'd ask him about his time with them. Thank you Steve for showing the rock world that you don't have to be foul-mouthed to be cool. I really respect that.

Yeah, I have a Dregs of the Earth promo poster that Steve, Rod and T Lavitz signed for me, as well as a very rare original vinyl copy of "The Great Spectacular", the band's class project for extra points at the Univ of Miami, that they signed (only a thousand or so were pressed, and Rod Morgenstein told me that the unsold records were stored in his sister's garage and got destroyed in a flood). Nice people, each and every one. RIP, T Lavitz.

Yes, they are! 'Power' gets more attention than the latter--which is very sad. IMHO, 'In the Spirit of Things' has a couple of filler songs, but the great material more than compensates. One of my favorite unknown gems from the whole catalog is "Ghosts"--which segues into "One Big Sky", another killer tune. I wished Steve (Morse) could have remained with Kansas longer. The later Dregs album with John Goodman is top shelf material--hinting at what Kansas could have been if Walsh could have exorcised his demons early enough.

I was part of the back stage crew at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan when he came through with Kansas as part of the 1st Airborne Rock and Roll Division USO tour. A cooler, more level headed, slicker sum-bitch has yet to be created. I was doing backstage security as well as assisting the sound guy, Merle, and was completely full of myself with no reason to be. I noticed him hanging out- long hair and all- and puffed up my chest to tell him I didn't think he was supposed to be there, and that I felt it was best he leave. Instead of telling me who he was and going all "rock star" on me, he simply said, "no problem" and wandered off to the theater office. When hd came back out with the manager, and I was introduced, he acted like not a thing had happened, and treated me with more respect than he had received. Truly a class act

The day I turned 18 back in october 1983 I attended a Mclaughlin/Delucia/Di Meola show with front row center seats and this guy, Steve Morse, opened up for the show. I was completely blown away by Mr. Morse and by the other 3 also of course. That night I managed to get backstage and meet all 4 of them. Mr. Morse was so nice and very accessible. He told me about the Dixie Dregs and the next day I took the bus all around the city of Montreal to find and buy all the Dixie Dregs albums I could find (they were kind of hard to find). Mr Morse is the most amazing and complete guitarist that I've ever heard. He can do anything on a guitar from classical to rock and progressive rock and country at the highest level. A true guitar legend. Thanks for the interview. That was a hell of an 18th birthday.
