By the end of the film the characters of Neil and Todd had ‘switched places,’ and both were affected in their individual ways because Keating acted as catalyst for them. Neil began as very outgoing and was eventually driven inward (due in part to his father’s pressure) but Todd began inward and eventually came out of his shell by movie’s end.

Robert talking about channeling femininity in the acting *chef’s kiss* He is so pretty. Wouldn’t have been nearly as good if they had portrayed a ridiculous Harrison Ford masculine energy. Also, him talking about Neil not understanding death and therefore feeling that ending his life is his ultimate form of taking control is a very excellent way of stating why it was a scene that happened. Suicide is a loss for the living, but the logic of the person in the moment is not revolved around that. It’s not romanticizing it. It’s just a reality of what it is.

Neil is heroic, until his suicide. I didn't think the film made that act look heroic at all. I understand,the fear that it might. But, instead I think the film achieved it's goal of not making it heroic. Neil defying his father to be in the play, was his last heroic deed. Todd's was defending his Captain!
@Kristalaurene Жыл бұрын
Agree, it was depicted as a tragedy, as it is. I didnt think once it showed suicide as heroism. If anything, it showed how sad it was that he thought he had no way out.
@sashafishteyn Жыл бұрын
i agree. when watching the film i saw that neil was visibly scared to kill himself. that scene was incredibly powerful and emotional because he was so scared to do it. he knew it was wrong, but i understand that he was a teenage boy and that he felt that this was his only way out of escaping the life his father was forcing on him. of course there were other ways he could have handled the situation, but his inevitable decision was the one that came with the most consequences. people thinking the suicide is made to be heroic are wrong.

After many viewings of DPS and lots of thought and analysis I decided that Peter Weir had taken the ‘liberal teacher vs. conservative administration’ script and elevated the power and impact of the film much higher by means of foreshadowing and symbolism that’s especially focused upon the Neil/Todd pair of characters and on Neil especially. For example, Puck’s concluding epilogue BECOMES a statement of Neil’s real-life situation as he recites those lines. Also, Keating’s statement about the photos of long-dead former students is folllowed by a lingering shot of Neil shown last, as if to single him out. The most powerful example is Neil’s/Puck’s ‘final bow’ seen at Neil’s opened bedroom window, a true Peter Weir touch and moment which RSL did superbly well despite the scene’s simplicity. Since Robin Williams’ own subsequent suicide the film now has an additional and more bitterly sad context for me as well, though DPS remains my favorite film.

I saw the NY Broadway Play of “Born Yesterday” with James Belushi and Robert Sean Leonard 10 yrs ago. I bought a ticket JUST to see RS Leonard. I sat in the front row and HATED James Belushi--he yelled so loud that he spat saliva all over us! I went to the Back Stage Door to meet RSL. He came out first and I was the only one there to see HIM.The rest were Belushi fans and had all this stuff for him to autograph. I was closest to the door and just quietly talked to him. I said I loved him in DPS, House, and the play. Then Belushi threw open the door and strode to HIS fans who gushed all over him. We stood there watching Belushi and his sycophants. I turned and said to RSL “Man he’s a REAL A-Hole!!” RSL, ever the gentleman, just smiled slightly and quietly said “Oh yeah!” He said good bye, hoped I would enjoy NY, then quietly walked past the throngs of fans into Times Square.. He knew who he was...and didn’t NEED the fans the way Belushi did. I think Jim Belushi KNEW he would never be better than his brother John Belushi who died WAY too young at age 32. It was an honor to meet Robert Sean Leonard and I wish everyone could meet him one day!

My father took me to the cinema to watch this movie when I was 16. Later he asked me which character I liked most and was surprised when I said I liked Todd. He had thought I'd be impressed by Neil but I thought he was a coward for not fighting for his independence and just give up his life, not thinking at all about what that would mean for the people he loved. Instead I felt Todd had taken all his strength to stand up for the people he cared for and was willing to make sacrifices to help others instead of only thinking about what made him happy. The actors are right,this film touched many in my generation. For me it meant I understood how restricted the world was, my parents had grown up in as kids and how much society had changed since. And also that I didn't want to allow others to define who I am.

This movie was exquisite and completely changed my life. It softened my heart and I continue to enjoy poetry for all that it represents: Romance, passion, love! It’s what makes us human and feel alive.

I searched for them after watching "Dead Poets Society" ......it feels different when I saw teenager boys becoming Senior Citizen.....so I searched for this interview where I can relate .....I don't know other movies and shows of them but from now I will watch them....I watched an interview of Todd means Ethan Hawke.....it was fascinating.....my favourite person in the movie was Neil....I admire him....

I read that the studio wanted named actors to play the boys such as those from St. Elmos Fire and the John Hughes movies. But Weir wanted fresh un named actors. Get this ...both Matt Damon and Ben Afflect auditioned for roles in this movie but obviously didn’t make the cut. Laura Flynn Boyle is in the end credits of the film but none of her scenes made the final movie. You see her in the directors cut.

i'm actually kinda glad that matt and ben didn't get the roles of the poets because i think the current cast of DPS is the appropriate choice and they really fit their characters as well i really can't imagine if matt and ben got landed the parts it would've been different...

This movie is such an inspiration for all of us, in all meanings, life, literature, for example, i did two weeks ago a presentation about DPS for my French class ( I am French so it’s like in the movie you know haha ), all about the literature in the movie. It’s my fav movie of all time, each actor is amazing, and If one of them sees this comment, let me tell you thank you. I am only 16 but you can’t know how much this movie ( so you as well ) helps and inspires me everyday! Hope to meet you one day.
