As someone from the Nordic regions I am very grateful for his work. He's treated the viking era and traditions with way more respect and understanding than 99% of the viking media that comes out from even my own country. Rather than just exploring stereotypes, he brings in a breath of humanity to the characters and world. The story made me consider the nature of love, and when it is and isn't appropriate to act violently, but also the important of having violence as an option when absolutely necessary. A great man with a great work.

"It didn't work out well" - only because Planetes had more ideas than it had pages. Despite the many themes and ideas it contains, despite being the hardest sci-fi ever to be put into pictures (certainly back then, and only Space Brothers has come close since despite it having been twenty years), it has left a grand total of only 27, twenty-seven, chapters. The anime, while going in a bit of a different direction, had the space to let its themes breathe and simmer. To hear that the creator of Planetes wants to go back to the future excites me like almost nothing else in all of fiction.

@RecordToDeathToBoredom
@RecordToDeathToBoredom Жыл бұрын
This man is so cool. He tries to get his philosophical message through via manga. That was very powerful, around 13:00. He's trying so hard to tell people just how stupid war is and that it's completely preventable. And it's true. He cares so much about us as people. I'm so glad someone like this guy got a lot of recognition. @ 24:40 he thinks it was a mistake to not hold back with how brutal he was in the manga, but it was probably the biggest reason it's so successful overseas. However, I do understand that feeling. There are a lot of people that still didn't get the message. Those who go "Season 2 is so boring, I want more fights like in season 1". They get spoiled by S1's brutal battles and probably the brutality of S1 in general. The way he goes about making his manga doesn't feel like a mangaka doing what they love. It feels like a politician that got into politics even though he hated politics. Yet he got into it BECAUSE he hated politics and wanted to make a change for the better. "I draw a lot of guts and gore, yet I like cute things" this tends to be the case when it comes to doing something for a long time. He draws it so much that he became affectionate to the opposite because it's such a refresher. Even using mangaka as the example, his hobbies are fishing and camping, both of which, takes you out of society and into tranquil quiet, doing almost nothing. While mangaka you're always working, always drawing, always planning, always writing. Work just never ends. When the balance isn't there, people tend to sway the other way in order to rebalance themself. This was an awesome interview. I stopped watching Vinland Saga after about 3 episodes because I felt so done with the violence. There was so much violence and I didn't like Thorfinn. Thors was a great father and people at the time put him down; especially with how Askeladd took the stage. I already knew where the story has been going through osmosis of reading comments on the subreddit. People always talked about Vinland Saga on the weekly popularity ranking. For me, that was good enough. This interview though, makes me want to watch it now, ngl. Knowing how great of a person this guy is, I can't help but want to support him somehow.

This is amazing content, honestly the most I've enjoyed an interview in years. Makoto Yukimura has made one of my all time favourite shows and hearing him talk about his process is fascinating. We need more stories like Vinland Saga, where thematic content is elevated, where form (art, audio, setting and attention to detail) and function (character development, plot and themes) are at such a high level and given in equal measures. Well done Makoto Yukimura, please keep it up🙌🏼😁

I'm so incredibly glad you got this chance to interview the GOAT himself. I absolutely love this man and his work. I will read anything he'll write about in the future. He has mine and many other's trust to write another amazing world, story and with deep fulfilling characters. Makoto Yukimura, thank you

Thank you Gigguk! It's rare in life to meet your heroes/someone you don't know but hold in high regard, and for them to be even greater than how you envision them. Yukimura is one such person. This made my week! Vinland Saga is a masterpiece, one of my favorite stories in manga and anime, and I'm so thankful to be alive right now as Yukimura is concluding it.
