Thank you for bringing this product information to a mass audience. I am located in Omaha, NE and 90% of houses built are still on concrete block. While I possess a knowledge of the building process I find this product fascinating. Mike Holmes in Canada has a TV show “Holmes on Homes” and over his 10th season and has rocked the building community, contractors, inspectors and introduce suggested laws in Canadian government to increase minimum building standards and your block is a building material highly recommended by him. He built the “Ultimate Garage” off the grid for environmental reasons as easy of use, ability to add rebar, use strong adhesives during construction and added rigid extruded polystyrene inside the block. Adding “Sealing Water Barriers and unsalted 2” (50mm) board attached to the outside. This increases “R” values but done right, allows for a cement board horizontal siding and Stucco! His ultimate garage is on my bucket list. The possibilities are almost endless. I am curious regarding locations where the product is manufactured. Omaha is 2,500 miles from either coast in the middle with rail access and interstate East, West, North to South to Kansas City, Topeka KS, Wichita to Oklahoma City into Dallas / Fort Worth. North-East Nebraska is covered in trees and millions of tons of premier wood pulp is free due to almost annual winds to exceed 110 MPH. People stack it into 5 locations for the taking. Free building material for these blocks. Thanks kindly for the information provided in this video. I want some for my backyard garage! Be well and safe my friend. DK, Omaha

I’m really considering using this material ok two of my projects, one being a 12unit apartment complex and the other being a duplex. Do you know the lifespan of this material and general cost difference from stick frame?

How does it do with prolonged freezes? For example, during temperatures ranging from 0C to -39C for periods of 6 months.

Durisol in Canada have done some studies on this. There is research showing submerged freeze thaw cycle analysis which is particularly aggressive and the product fared perfectly well. There are also acoustic barriers in places like Canada which have been up for 40 years plus, fully exposed to the temperatures you describe as well as salt spray etc that freeway environments present.

How about some U numbers? Also, you mentioned it could be exposed so I guess it is UV stable?

Thanks for the question. U values are published in the Technical Manual and thermal conductivities in the BBA certificate should you wish to model your own configurations. Suffice to say U values below 0.2 can easily be achieved. It is worth pointing out that U values modelled in software fail to take into account thermal mass effects. They also assume a steady state of heat transfer and in the UK's temperate climate, the temperature is almost constantly moving which undermines the models somewhat. Peer reviewed papers studying real Durisol builds in the UK are available upon request showing the real energy demand (or lack thereof) of Durisol structures. And yes, the woodcrete is UV stable and is commonly used in acoustic panels which are permanently exposed structures. In any case, at Durisol UK we manufacture units for construction and the end product is usually covered.
