An Introduction to Mealy’s
0.30 Officially the business (was) started in 1934 by my late father.
0.35 1949 is the earliest auctioneers license we can find.
0.41 We found newspaper cuttings of an auction he advertised locally in 1934.
0.51 Why I joined the business, I grew up in it probably and I was always attracted to antiques, fine art and especially guns and silver.
1.03 We grew up around it.
1.08 My speciality would be probably period paintings, silver and Georgian furniture.
1.14 I love Irish furniture.
1.17 I love everything Irish to be honest.
1.32 Of course the Mealy name is synonymous with Irish country house sales.
1.36 We’ve conducted over 60, more than any other Irish firm.
1.43 We were honoured to be associated with Luggala for the Right Honourable Gareth Browne; the Murnaghan Collection on the instructions of the late Alice Murnaghan;
1.53 Abbeyleix House on the instructions of the Viscount of Vesci; Dunbrody Park on the instructions of the Lord and Lady Donegal;
2.02 And probably the most important recent one was Mount Congreve in Waterford in association with Christie’s, which yielded over 2 and a half million (euros) on the hammer.
2.23 Approximately 8 years ago, my 2 sons joined me in the business and together we designed a state of the art, modern, custom built auction gallery.
2.32 It’s very spacious, we have 2 floors, we have lifts, a modern cafe, an enormous car park, wheelchair access, confidentiality rooms, strong rooms, forklift access and many other facilities.
2.49 I’m in this business over 40 years and I’m still addicted to the buzz.
2.56 It’s a continuous process of discovery and surprises come every day and I love it.
