Indeed, shall we never forget that the longest trade route in the world was between Acapulco and Manila, part of the New Spain, for 300 years.

@@fighter500mx3 Indigenous men also married spanish women. But it wasn't that common because the first settlers were pretty much men only. But eventually Spanish women arrived and they also married indigenous men

the Aztecs were defeated by the Tlaxcaltecas, not the Spaniards.

@@smarthistory-art-history Hernán Cortés first defeated several peoples, Tlaxtecs and others. So they became allies of Spain. It is a process very similar to the Romanization in Hispania, Britain or the Gauls, with Julius Caesar. The native peoples of Europe and the Americas were attracted by the technical, religious, and cultural innovations of the Roman and Spanish civilization in the Americas. The indigenous people were intelligent people, and then the alliance was easier, which put an end to human sacrifices. The Celts also had human sacrifices. The Spanish army in America was second rate, except for a few veterans of the Italian wars. Most of the Spanish army was at war in Europe, against France, England, Protestant Germany, the Netherlands and the Turkish Empire, simultaneously in the 16th-17th centuries. But the Spanish in America built ships to invade the Aztec capital, across the lagoon, and they had firearms, like cannons. Hernán Cortés had 1,500 Europeans in the conquest of Mexico, but there were another 40,000 Spaniards in the Caribbean. And at the end of the 17th century there were 600,000.

The tlaxcaltecas were unable to liberate themselves from the hunting Aztecs made regularly upon them in the called "guerras floridas". They were just preys inside a confined territory sourrounded by the Aztec empire, a territory which served as a source of victims for human sacrifice in Tenochtitlan. During the siege of Tenochtitlan spaniards had to demand to its tlaxcaltecas allies to keep out of battle and out of the cuauseways that lead into the city, where the fights frequently took place, because the gruesome tlaxcalteca army was more a burden tha a relief. Bernal diaz, at several points of his account, tells how they had to ask the tlaxcaltecas to stay away from battle in order not to collapse the place, for the spaniards to gain more room and mobility in the battle. After the enemies lines were open tlaxcaltecas were called, only then their tactics of combating were of use and the could collect the booty. Moreover, it was the mastery of the lagoon by the spaniards and its bergantines -boats- that really changed the game after the 28th april 1521. And even with the boats, things started to go really well only when the spanish float learned how to liberate itself of the traps and palisades put in the shallow waters by the enemies, to contraint the navigation. The "amigos tlaxcaltecas" were and still are really appreciated for its help, though

@@Gloriaimperial1 Please don´t compare the spanish conquerors who destroyed brilliant civilizations in America and stealed to the indians everything they could find (even clothes, according to spanish primary sources!) to Rome's conquests. Rome found in Hispania, Britain and Gaul poor small villages of rude tribus of shepperds and peasants who got atonished with roman cities and roman commerce; the bunch of rude greedy spanish conquerors found in America great empires, and got atonished with well planned wonderful cities, larger and more beautiful than those they could find in Spain or anywhere in Europe. They had nothing in their civilization (cultural, religious or technical - except maybe iron and powder guns) who could attract the peoples of America. Roman civilization was civilized because romans were tolerant. They didn't impose their culture, their way of life or religion. They were so civilized that they even could appreciate civilizations more elaborate than theirs and adopt them, as they did when they concquered Greece, for example; spanish conquerors were ignorant, greedy and brutally intolerant: they destroyed everything, learned nothing for the more advanced techniques they found and imposed their culture and way of life by killing most of the population. They were so ignorant that they burned all the books and melted every delicate wonderful work of art of jewelry in gold they received or stole from the natives. Don't talk with disdain of pre colombian human sacrifices: the spanish catholicism was intolerant, cruel and had terrible human sacrifices; they tortured, humiliated publicly and then murdered innocent people by roasting them at the stake in "autos de fe" - this was the practice of Spanish Inquisition. Catholic spanish practiced other human sacrifices: slavery and forced labour and genocide. So it is not true that spanish put an end to human sacrifices in America: they made them massive. Final note: "romanization" doesn´t mean Roman conquest.

We appreciate that you took time to comment on our video. In response we want to point out that we specifically call out the violent destruction of the indigenous culture of the Mexica, the destruction of their most sacred sites, the impact of disease, and the Spanish motivations of taking natural and human resources (we mention enslavement), and forced religious conversion with very graphic images and we do all this within a video that is less then 5 minutes in length. We also do this despite the need to explain the political entity and trade systems of New Spain (which is the focus of the video). Perhaps because we went out of our way to represent the suffering of the indigenous population we inadvertently gave the impression that that was the focus of this short video. Please refer to the title of the video for clarification. Further, we treat with seriousness and respect, the destruction of populations by colonial powers in dozens of videos that focus on the art made by indigenous peoples in North and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. In fact, both scholars and learners have told us that Smarthistory's treatment of the destructive impact of colonial history is both thoughtful and appreciated. This is an important issue for us and we are disappointed by your perspective.

Did you make this video because of a comment I made a few months back when I call out the need to recognize "New Spain" as a part of Mexican history? You even deleted that video and uploaded again a couple of weeks after that.
