Hear Raphael's life story told by 'The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Raphael' curator Matthias Wivel.
In his brief career, spanning just two decades, Raphael shaped the course of Western culture like few artists before or since.
This exhibition, one of the first ever to explore Raphael's complete career, looks at his celebrated paintings and drawings as well as his work in architecture, poetry, and design for sculpture, tapestry and prints.
The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Raphael
9 April - 31 July 2022

I saw similar exhibition in Madrid EL Prado, summer 2010, it’s superb. The description in this video is equally superb and enticing. I wish I could see it too.

For some reason I never put it together that Raphael was working on his frescoes in the papal apartments at the same time that Michelangelo was working on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. These two areas are very close to one another, I wonder if they ever shared assistants or anything like that. Did Mike and Rafe ever just 'hang out'?

I disagree that his legacy endures to this day. To me he stands out as the only Old Master whose status has actually declined. His work is no longer discussed in the same regard it held as late as Walter Pater's era, and yet he was once mentioned in the same breath as DaVinci and Michelangelo, with his paintings possibly the most copied in French Academy training. How, when and why this decline in rep. occurred I have no idea, and hope the National Gallery show addresses it. That said, I'm so excited for this show, think of Raphael as a GoAT of composition, especially within individual figure groupings. When you look at the paintings in terms of passages (vs overall), each choice within a sequence (in terms of shape, value, hue, opacity vs transp., etc.) appears elegant and inspired. And such a light touch with edges, those painted contours are just insanely gorgeous.
