An introduction to the baroque flute, with reference to the renaissance flute and the classical flute, narrated by Kate Clark.
In this video, Kate talks about the flute that was used to play the music of Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Telemann, and many others, as well as the similarities and differences to the earlier renaissance flute and the later classical and modern flutes. I love the enthusiasm of the Dutch musicians on baroque music, especially played on historic instruments. The reasons she told in the video why I stuck on the recorder, and why I resisted as a child to practice the clarinet. I practiced even the "sharpy" clarinet etudes on my recorder instead of that reed instrument. Baroque woodwinds are simple as possible, only a few holes (7 +1 thumb for the recorder), no Boehm-system keys, which I was alwasys messed with on the clarinet. I also can play the pieces she played for demonstration. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to sound properly a flute, (I've tried it a few times) but I love the sound of the baroque one. The modern, Boehm-flute has a harsh, almost aggressive sound, which is good for the symphonic orchestra playing romantical or modern pieces, but I prefer that soft sound for baroque chamber music.

Thank you so much for these educational videos. I already knew a lot about the baroque flute, but I didn’t realize that this fingering system was the same for classical and early romantic era flutes as well. Such a shame that most people nowadays will never hear historical music played on period instruments, as the standard modern orchestra and modern instruments are used to play virtually all classical repertoire written for orchestra.

What fantastic acoustics in wherever she is. If I didn't know better, I'd almost think everything was put through a reverb pedal. It makes a nice sharp note. The modern flute is a little breathy. Which can be nice. Not necessarily a bad thing.
@AllanTheBanjo
@AllanTheBanjo 4 ай бұрын
Sounds to me too like they've added some reverb to the recording. It's not present when she speaks so I don't think it's the natural response of the building - but I could be wrong.

Thanks! I’m focusing on the Recorder right now. I wonder how the Baroque Flute would work for playing Folk music? I tried the Baroque Flute in the 90’s focusing on Baroque music. I wonder how it would work on English, Cape Breton and Irish Folk music? I want to have a little different sound for these other than the usual keyed wooden Flute. I’m also working on this music with the Violin. 😎

Can some one please explain what is the difference between Irish flute and Renaissance flute ?
@VoicesofMusic
@VoicesofMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Irish flute is more like a 19th century or late Classical flute. The bore is conical. Renaissance flute has no keys and the bore is nearly cylindrical. Some Irish flutes are made without keys, but typically the bore design is of a later style. There's lots of different types.
