I have never thought a little dash could mean so much and have so much visual power! Now that I am thinking about it, a lot of writers that I read usually use the dash to make an ironic remark and I think that's really interesting too. I really liked this unusual piece of knowledge! I will dive into Dickinson's work for sure!

Ruby! Have you ever read the poem ‘The Dash’ by Linda Ellis. It makes one think about the dash in a different light. I love it. THE DASH the poem by Linda Ellis I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstone from the beginning... to the end. He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own, the cars... the house... the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard; are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left that still can be rearranged. To be less quick to anger and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we've never loved before. If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile... remembering that this special dash might only last a little while. So when your eulogy is being read, with your life's actions to rehash, would you be proud of the things they say about how you lived your dash? ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

As someone who is a huge ✨typography nerd✨, I feel compelled to say that, typically, typewriters use monospaced fonts, meaning that each letter has the same width. The em and en dash did get their names after the widths of those letters, but as far as I can tell it has absolutely nothing to do with typewriters. Also I believe it used to be common practice to not have an em dash on typewriters at all, and people were used to just typing two shorter dashes one after the other to create a longer line.

There is a German book called "Die Marquise von O..." ("The marquise of O...") in which a dash represents the period of time in which the main character gets raped or seduced (it is still argued which one it is). I had to study it and I can recommend it if you're interested in looking at the way punctuation can be used in prose. (I feel like such a nerd too right now, but I kind of love it aswell :D ) Thanks for the video Ruby! It's so interesting to get a look into different topics on this channel

Please read 🙏🏻 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son for whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. -For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. -For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; -I am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but by Me. -Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. -For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. -From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

I love using dashes to create subordinate clauses and also before a rhetorical question which then ends a sentence! Try it in creative writing! I think the dash - when not over used - (see what I did there 😂) really adds a nice pace to a work and especially when used in writing which is first person makes the work feel much more personal!

I read the novella "The Marquise of O" by Heinrich von Kleist a few years ago and it contains "the most famous dash in history" according to some. *SPOILER AND TRIGGER WARNING* One dash in there represents the whole process of a man raping a woman and getting her pregnant, which the reader finds out about only in the end. Don't worry though, the book is really great and not as brutal as it seems by my description. I think it's beautiful how the dash is used in such a unique way and contains so much meaning :)

More examples of how the dash is used--besides Emily Dickinson--would be nice. I also wish someone would explain to me why publishers can use long dashes, but the only dash available on keyboards is a very short one that just doesn't do it for me.
