I recommend you the spanish poet Federico García Lorca. He's not from the "Siglo de oro", but from the "Generación del 27", and his poems are beautiful, specially, the "Pequeño vals vienés". Leonard Cohen wrote a song based on that poem, "Take this waltz", which is also beautiful ♥

I love seeing people from other parts of the world so interested in our Spanish culture, so many things have happened in our history that not even us remember everything at this point, lol. Most people tend to remember only the bad things about Spain, which is sad because the good ones were and still are much more numerous. We have centuries of history and that included a million things happening at once both positive and negative. In the positive side, there were amazing women in our history that not many people know much about. Also there were lot of very important writers, painters, sculptors, architects, you name it, and we even had our own Nobel prize winners (both in literature and scientific areas like medicine). Also we had our fair share of amazing inventors that changed our modern world forever (creators of things like the first helicopter, first submarine, first spacial suit, first cable car, first mop, first lollipop and so much more) and the sad part is that most people don’t know nothing about that. Very cool that you love it so much.

Some corrections to some things: La Reconquista: Literally the reconquest of Spain which had been 95% invaded by the Muslims, the latter found resistance from the very beginning and the Reconquest started immediately. Jews were eventually expelled in 1492 because they were a threat and a temptation for the new Catholic jews who could/were reverting back to Judaism. No religion tolerated switching religion anywhere in Europe. The Inquisition targeted Catholics and those that left Catholicism specifically, they didn't target non-Catholics, that is very common mainstream misconception. As for the Spanish Golden Age, it has to start in 1478 with the merging of the two main kingdoms (Castile and Aragon) and the first language grammar from Antonio de Nebrija which is then followed by the play/novel "La Celestina. So, the Golden Age is between 1478-1700. Ends with Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz as stated in the video, 100% agreed, a proto-feminist clearly, great writer. Spain had huge writers, artists, inventors, check this out: a. Playwrights: Lope de Vega, Calderon de la Barca, Tirso de Molina and even Cervantes. The first two are considerably more prolific than Shakespeare with a ton of masterpieces. b. Novelists: Francisco de Rojas (La Celestina), Anonymous novel (Lazarillo de Tormes), Miguel de Cervantes (Don Quijote, La Galatea, First Short Stories, etc...) c. Inventors: Several but will note Jeronimo de Ayanz who was the inventor in the 16th century of the first underwater suit, first air conditioning system used in mines and his house, first submarine, and first steam engine machine (operational but underestimated). d. Explorers: Discovery of the American Continent plus the sea routes to go and come back, Discovery of the Pacific and most of its island and sea routes back to the Americas, discovery of Australia (Pedro de Quiros and Luis Vaez de Torres 1605, and discovery of the Antarctic (Gabriel de Castilla in the early 17th century). Also the first 3 circumnavigations of the globe, Drake's was the 4th. e. Artists: El Greco, Zurbaran, Murillo, Cano, Velazquez, etc... It should be said that it is the greatest golden age of any nation in history, I challenge anyone that disagrees. Obviously, I fell short in listing everything. A few more: over 30,000 plays written (women were allowed to act), the first women university professors and the first Black university professor and painter (it's true, there were many free blacks in the Spanish empire too, the painter was a disciple of Velazquez), the invention of the modern chess, the first declaration of human rights, the freeing of Indian slaves in 1542 that causes a civil war, the invention of the classical guitar, fencing, the invention of the 5 day work week with 2 non-work day weekends and current calendar that we use, the first court system with defending lawyers of the accused, the discovery of the Aztec, Mayan and Inca empires and documentation of their legacies/literature with translations and creation of those culture's first written forms and grammars for their languages (some of them preceding the first English grammar), etc....

Juan Latino (born Juan de Sessa; Ethiopia c. 1518 - Granada, c. 1594/1597) was a Spanish professor of Ethiopian descent at the University of Granada during the sixteenth century. He could be considered the first African who studied at a European university and who reached a professorship on Grammar and Latin Language at the University of Granada.

Nice video, I love how passionate you are about the subject matter. May I ask how you spell 'arudai' 'eruday'? I'm a native English speaker, but I'm not familiar with that word. Hi Eve! . My name is Juan and I from Madrid (Spain). I'm a music teacher and I would like to correct a small mistake in his video. All your explanations are great, but the denominación of golden age in Spanish literature receta to writers such as Calderón, Lope de Vega... and begining with Cervantes of course. However, the literature belongin to San Juan de la Cruz, Santa Teresa...is clasified within the Misticsm literature. During the 16th century, Spain was the golden age un música with remarkable composers such as Cristobal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero y Tomás Luis de Victoria. I Hope you will found this information useful. Greetings!

Learned a lot here. The video would have been better if it covered more topics outside of the literary works. I would title this video the literature of the Spanish Golden Age and make another one that covers what happened. What happened is covered here but very briefly and not in depth. I’d pull that out as the intro and maybe add more info.

All the countries of Europe had expelled their jews from their countries since decades by the time Spain expelled her jews. By the way, Spain was looked down on by other Europeans for being tolerant with other religions and other races, for being mixed, etc. One example is Erasmus of Rotherdam that didn't want to visit Spain for being "a country of jews and moors". Also, other countries of Europe had their inquisition, that was even more vicious than in Spain.

Eve, thanks for this wonderful video. I'd like you to have a look to this page of the wiki because te term "reconquista" is the traditional term used in education but many people think is not correct. es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reconquista I wonder if you have seen the Spanish series El Ministerio del tiempo. It has a lot of episodes dedicated to el siglo de oro. I think we Spaniards prefer "la generación del 27" to "el siglo de oro writers". We feel them much closer to us and we study them when we are more mature.
