Nice discovery but I would be too worried about BlueLink failing, not just because of reception. I have had it not work for hours in an area with perfect reception, probably because of some server issue.

Taking the metal key out of the fob to lock fob & phone in the car, then lock it with the metal key leads to similar results. The alarm isn’t active when you do that, however.

I have heard that metal key can be used to lock the car even in utility mode (so you should be able to run appliances from inner socket).

​@@martinjedlak it can. When I had to leave the dog in the car I leave it in utility mode with the driver's window open. Lean in, lock the doors and then roll the window up. When coming back I have to use the metal key to open up the car.

So I used to do this method when I first purchased my '22 Limited but stopped since Bluelink was so unreliable, even in areas with "good service". They also will take the service down for unannounced maintenance breaks. I'm sure it's gotten better since then but I'm not willing to risk it anymore. There is the NFC card option that I didn't see mentioned which should be immune to Bluelink outages.

Yeah unfortunately my 22 SEL can’t use any NFC key. In my personal experience, bluelink has been pretty reliable throughout 2023.

Hi ionic guy I'm reaching out to you for help with my Hyundai ionic five 2022 SE for the last three months I'm unable to use the voice command to open the charging port door. This was after I did a map update I redid the map update and the problem still persists the first time I did the map update. It gave me a code, but with the second map update that code disappear. I have been in contact with Blue Link throughout this whole period of time, and even though though I wrote them specifically what the problem was including, setting them a screenshot of the code that appeared. Originally they still continue to ask me the same questions over and over and have not been able to rectify my problem. I wonder what I could do to have this situation remedied please, if you could help, I would really appreciate it as my mobility is not as good as it should be, and I need this feature thank you in advance for your help

Not only does phone as key not work for iPhone but with as reliable as BlueLink is I would never trust this even in areas with good reception. I really miss the Ford keypad, I had that on three different Ford products and loved it. You could also program mine for longer passcodes to make random guesses almost impossible.

Interesting that this works. I'll have to test this with my Kia EV6 and the Kia Access app to see if it is the same. Relying on cell service and the app to work is a bit concerning though. So as you said, definitely not for remote areas. Out here in the West that's almost all hiking areas.

Great tip but what i really want to do is retro fit “phone as key” to my ‘22 SEL. Does anyone know if that is at all possible? Can dealers add whatever hardware is needed? Or is there a straight up software lock?

Actually, Ford introduced it's Keyless Entry Keypad system on the 1980 Lincoln Continental. I remember seeing one when I was in college. So it's been around for 44 years now! Also, I discovered this hack when I accidentally locked the keys in the car the first week after I bought it!

I use the NFC card key for this purpose. Purchased online for like $30. Though i believe that also requires the car to have a connection as well :/

If the Hyundai servers go down you are in the same situation as no signal. So if you trust that also will not happen, go for it.

As often as this app goes down, I would have zero trust that it's available when I need it to. Also reception will work fine some days and others not in the same physical location. I would buy the keycard and use that.

That seems risky to me. If someone sees you toss the keys in the car, then they can smash the window, hop in, and drive away. The police and your insurance company might not have much sympathy when they hear that the key was in the car. Also, if your phone dies while you're hiking, then you're out of luck. When I take my Ioniq 5 to go trail-running, I carry the NFC key card, which doesn't rely on cell service, and I usually have my phone as a backup..

God I wish we got Digital key in the UK, so many other brands do it but Hyundai and Kia refuse to bring it here. My wife's BMW has it and it's great.

I guess this works if you didn't expect to not want your keys with you. But if you have the Digital Key option then I would just leave my physical key at home and use my phone to enter/turn on the car. 🤷‍♂️

You can also lock and unlock the doors from an Apple Watch connected to an iPhone. I don’t know if it works without the phone if you have a watch with cellular service.

I would never recommend doing this even in area with good service. What if blue link service is down? This happens regularly. What if you service provider has a glitch. You might end up locking yourself out.

This is nice until the Bluelink app freezes and doesn’t let you do anything like it did for my wife. Thankfully we were home and had the spare key. We had to go into the cars systems setting to refresh the app. Still a cool feature when it works.

@@TheIoniqGuy The app on your phone that allows you to connect to the your car has a monthly subscription cost that kicks in after a couple of years or so. I'm not sure how long that is. But most of us haven't got to that limit yet.

I believe it’ll be $13 per month but 2024 and newer Hyundai cars it’ll be free for the entire ownership. I’m sure that $13 month will change between now and the time ours expires as well

Add me to the list of people who finds Blue Link to be completely unreliable. If anything, I just wish they could make a more reliable utility mode that didn't require work arounds to be able to leave the car with it running.

Put the car in utility mode. Get out and manually lock the doors with the key.

Turn the car into utility mode. Open the driver's window. Get out of the car (don't forget your keys). Lean in and press the lock all doors button. Press the window close and remove your hand quickly. Car is now locked with the aircon on for as long as you like. You can unlock the door again using the metal key.

It’s 20 per day indeed. Limit was set to avoid killing the 12v battery.

When I go biking I have my phone mounted on my handlebar for data so if I don’t need my keys, I’d rather leave them behind. I think most people are apt to bring their phone with them wherever they go. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t like my keys jangling in my pocket.

You can purchase and program the NFC card. It's still something to carry, but card sized instead of phone sized.
