An Issue with MXL Microphones

I'm describing some fit and finish issues with some of my MXL mics.

Great video with good honest info. Myself, despite their occasional QC issues, I've always been a big fan of Marshall mics. Not sure about now, but when they first came out I bought their MXL 2001 and a MXL 609 small diaphragm condenser mic. The MXL-2001 sounded fantastic and is still one of my favorite mics as it has a nice silky high-end and lovely lows. However I had a defective 609 mic. I called them up and they gave me the return number to send it back to them. Their U.S. office called me back and told me that they were sending me back not only a new one, but also a matched 2nd one. Sadly the gentleman that hooked me up (sadly I forget his name as it was long ago) went to go work for a rival mic company, but man that level of customer service made me a life-long fan of their mics. I do hope they fix their QC issues, but generally I'm pretty happy as long as they sound good. I think I'll be buying their 990 mic in the near future as it really sounds nice from all the recordings I've heard done with it including yours. Keep up the awesome reviews. You have a fantastic voice BTW. I can listen to you talk all day. Your voice is just very relaxing and easy on the ears.

I have an old MXL 2006 that's been stored since 2006. Works great for a cheap microphone. Great for vocals, podcasting, etc... The shock mount needs replacement, and there's a broken component piece just loose in the tube. I tried unscrewing it but no luck there, it's screwed on so tight. All in all, $70 mic, great buy. However, now you gotta get an interface. Idk how usb mics do as far as quality is concerned, that might be a better option for someone just looking to get started quickly. These mics have quite a good sound quality for their price. I understand disliking the build and QA quality but it's clear where they saved the money. Some other popular mics have amazing build and QC but the sound you get for the money is not the greatest.

Appreciate the honest review. I think one of the reasons these Chinese manufacturers can deliver a solid product at such bargain prices is because quality control is virtually non-existent. I've heard similar quality control complains with KZ brand in-ear monitors, where there's basically a 10% chance you receive a defective product or straight up dud, but the other 90% of the time it's a perfect functioning hi-fidelity pair of earbuds.

Great discussion. Your voice sounds rich at the bottom end on several of the mics. Rather flat on other mics. My 990 has the logos on the band holding the grille and lines up well. Fit and finish, IMO, is for others looking for a good looking mic. If it captures sound the way I want, that is my major goal.

I replaced the capsule on the MXL 990 to an RK47(If I'm remembering correctly. I also replaced the basket with on from microphone parts. It can hang with my expensive mics now. Sounds fantastic!

I've noticed the decal mis-alignment on my MXL V67 - at least the basket and the cardiod symbol on the ring align with the actual diaphragm. So I just need to make sure that when setting up my mic for recording I use that as reference instead of the decal on the body. Either way, it's pretty annoying to see such a manufacturing defect in a product, no matter the price. I can see on a cheap-o non-directional dynamic mic it not mattering as much, but for something they market as a "large diaphragm studio condenser" this detail needs to be better controlled during manufacturing. Mine is off by about 10 degrees...

I personally won't buy mxl products. I own a akg p420, p220, shure sm7b, electrovoice dynamic mic and rode ntg2. I personally like rode and shure when it comes to brands. Keep up the hard work. Always love watching your video.

It records way better than the H6's built in mics and it isn't so expensive that I'd worry about it getting dinged up in transit. I definitely understand your connection with your equipment! also have a problem with the MXL 770 Mic I picked up, think theres a loose connection somewhere causing a grounding issue, Mic hums and buzzes.

The dome are solded because the condenser mics needs a faraday shield to prevent noise, meybe glue together is not a best option to join this together again, I use a solder station set to 140º and use low temperature solder, the melt poin is about 110º and i had a gerat results doing that way, i make some repairs of this mics in Brasil and in most of the cases the problem is the capsule degraded by the humidity, the circuit board is ok in 90%, the principal problems is low gain and the sound goes down when you speak near the microphone. Your point is very good, because for the pryce you pay, the alingment must be perfect, and this is a build thing, simple to be checked on the line assembling.

I just ordered an MXL 990 because of the good reviews it receives, and it sounded so much better than the 770 on your other comparison video. I would hope China would improve the quality on these mic by listening to folks like you, and maybe they have. Basically this mic is a gamble with not too much to lose for the quality of the sound it records from narration.

Hello! The 990 will be excellent for narration. The 770 just has a slightly better diaphragm that let's it record instruments slightly better. I did replace the 990 in this video with another one and the quality is a lot better. Good luck with your projects!

Just took a look at my MXL 990 and the diaphragm is hanging out of its holder inside the grill 😂 The diaphragm is also misaligned to the grill and decals, I would have never thought to check

The last budget mic I bought was a TLM 103 copy. It came with a Newman logo you could paste on the body. For those that need that logos to assured triple platinum, go for it. I've heard many pros diss both Mackie and bBhringer for the same or similar reasons. Why would it surprise me if a Chinese website offered logos of pretty near anything you want. I have put a few logos on gear and cases that has riled up more than one entry level gopher. It keeps 'em honest though when I ask them to clarify.

If you reach into the bump & ding bin for a deal, that's what you'll get; a deal on bumps & dings. I am 90% certain that mount was bent when the cheap mic stand somebody mounted it to was knocked over from jerking a cable. Then the reseller did a mediocre job of repair. As a stagehand I've seen it a million times. I've bought many MXL mics new with zero issues. You're getting a good deal on them new as it is. If you cheap out to save a buck, you'll pay for it. I know this video is 4 years old and NOWADAYS I probably would steer clear of MXL because MARSHALL, the parent of MXL, is on the down-slide after being acquired by a private equity firm. You know what THAT means...

I would like your opinion: I am about to get a mic, I will record mainly Saxophone, eventually vocal and another instruments, but no doubts mainly the saxophone. I don't think I really need a super top mic, can be something on a budget, but I would like to get good results... what do you think of AKG P420? I have been considering MXL 990, also Rode NT1A. Hello! All three mics will do just fine for recording a saxophone however the 990 with its smaller diaphragm wight give you a less rich/cheaper sound and is tailored towards vocals. The P420 will do better for vocals and instruments but unless you need multiple patterns, you'll be paying for an extra diaphragm on the mic that you won't use. The P220 uses the same diaphragm so you may consider that one instead. The NT1A is the best choice out of the three for recording a Sax and other instruments including voice. The NT1 and 1A are right at the boundary of professional level mics. You probably won't see a 990 or 420/220 in pro studios, but you will see some NT mics. The NT1A would work better for instruments, am I right? I was afraid it to be too bright on the beginning, but I was comparing the frequency response right now and the NT1A seems to be the most interesting out of all these budget mics. Hello! Sorry to hear about your 770. Right now the best budget mics in my collection are the MXL V67G, SE electronics X1A, and Audio Technica AT2020. I haven't had any technical problems with MXL mics only with fit and finish. Good luck with your projects!

Hello! I did a review of a new MXL 990 and it looks and sounds great. They do have a quality control problem but it may not be as bad as it looks. Right now for less than 99.00 the 990 and the 770 are excellent choices for podcasting.

Hi CaneMajor, I have a MXL 990 and a Shure beta 87a in my homestudio, in Sao Paulo with a lot of radio stations around in the neighborhood. I'm having issues with MXL, I hear a lot of radio frequency interferences (it doesn't happen with shure mic!). Once I saw someone in a video saying that it happens because of ink inside the mic, and the solution would be scrapping to remove the ink. What do you think about it? Any idea?

Hello! You could give it a try but you may do more damage trying to fix the problem. MXL seems to have a quality control issue. For the most part they do OK but they seem to have more issues than other mic brands. Good luck.

Good video. Thanks. I avoided mxl for a long time until I found a great mod guy to replace the guts. I buy them used off GC, used gear page, sometimes use CL, reverb or musicgoround, but mainly GC. So far, I have modded the mxl, 2001, and 920. Since the capsules and diaphragms are the same sizes, the 2001 circuitry is based on the U87 and the 920 is based on the Shoeps. I also had a Cad 2200, oktava 319, and a AKG pencil mic modded. My main mic is the RODE NTK with upgraded tube and capsule. Then there's the karma k10's, Bluebird Blue, A/T 2035. Yes, most my locker is filled with under $100 mics, but most are modded and ALL but the mxl 920 ($50 GC) were purchased used. I would put any of them up against mid-level mics ($500-999) and maybe some top line. The mods worked magic. I would encourage you to do some pre/post reviews of those mxl mics before and after having mods performed. I can send you the email of the guy I use. That would make a nice video. I think you'll be surprised.

I have a couple v69m mics that have their moments of being the best sounding option for a task. I picked up the duel dynamic dx-2 on a whim (it was on sale) and it's interesting. I think it could be a much better design and build. It's the weak point in my mxl adventures. Recently, I've picked up a pair of the r144 ribbon mics and I'm really pleased with those. I'm looking into transformer replacement options for them to hopefully make them even more pleasing. You keep calling all of these large diaphragm mics small diaphragm for some reason, but I enjoyed the vid all the same. 👍

As a rule of "thumb" 1 " 25.4 mm or larger is large. 3/8" to one inch medium. Less than 3/8" small. Each has a useful function and price point. I have noted that many mics do not spec in the diaphram size. I've measured them with a digital micrometer and it seems the actual number quoted may be the O.D. of the capsule holder, the OD on the capsule or the diameter of the capsule surface.

I have two 990's and after looking at this video I looked closely at one of them and the grill is a little woomy-jawed to the lower body and the two logos don't quite square up. One is at church for the preacher so I'll look at it also. They look great and sound even better ! I do Piano at church and toy around with recording our singers. (audio engineer wanna-bee.)

@@CaneMajor Thanks for reply, Just tried last Sun. a pair of Rode M5's on the 6 foot grand. Muy Bueno. Used a AT 4040 for lead singer but it picks up too much piano on back side so I replaced with an MXL 606 pencil mic to try next Sun. The AT 4040 worked great with a digital because of better isolation with cables. The grand throws sound everywhere.

Hello! The V63M is a much better mic. Try putting the mic close to the instrument and pointed away from where the outside noise is coming from.

I bought a 990 and sent it back. It was said to be a LDC but it isn't. The little capsule sits in a big dummy ring so it looks big though the grill. Mine sounded thin and tinny. It is a waste of money and something of a poser.

Hello! For vocals and some instruments the 990 will work just fine in your home studio. But I recommend the 770 over the 990 because it does a little better with bass than the 990. Good luck!

Wouldn't it be ironic to discover that the misalignment is an intentionally calibrated, beneficial feature? 😉 Like, if testing revealed that by centering your voice towards the logo, it actually offsets the diaphragm at a very specific elliptical angle, painstakingly calculated to reduce plosives and maximize the performance of the capsule? 🙃

Very true. I have found the structure of the mic screen is almost always in good alignment with the diaphram. However, I don't use a pop filter so I test the best off axis and distance prior to tracking. 23 degrees and 8-10 off diaphram seem to be a good place to start. Oddly enough 23 degrees is approximately the same angle satellite tv dishes are lined up to where I live. So for those keeping score 23 is a very special number. For another day.

a lot of times. with lower cost mics you will occasionally get these issues. especially with cheap priced from the beginning such as a 200 dollar mic. Not insulting your intelligence but I don't expect the best in quality control on products that are way cheaper than more vintage competitors. companies like Behringer as an example. AKG 414 as an example is definitively going to be way better as far as quality. BUT I do like MXL mics because they sound really good especially for there price point. I think you would have to agree because not only did you buy one but you bought four.. Sure.....they had build issues but If I am not mistaken, they were used and it sound like the previous owners just handle those mics poorly. I have the MXL 990. MXL 2006, MXL 440, and a MXL R80 ribbon mic. They all sound really good and have no problems recording records with them, BUT my best mic I like to use is my RODE NT2A. its just a overall better mic.

Hello! To correct you, I have five MXL mics now. I bought another 990 to see if it had any fit and trim issues and made a video about it as well. I started this channel ten years ago and one of the first things I noticed is people are very particular about their mic brands and loyalty and can feel almost insulted if you say anything bad about theirs. This video was to point out an issue with MXL mics. I have plenty of other mics in my collection from other brands and yes some of the have slight issues, but in my circle of producers and artists MXL has THE bad reputation. And I bought these mics to see for myself. And to point something out from my video that you seem to have missed. The V250 which regularly sells for 200.00 was brand new when I bought it. Which means the decal and mount issue were direct from the factory. And the 990 that came apart in my hand most likely DID come apart due to the previous owner's handling but that was due to it being soldered incorrectly from the factory and when i reassembled it using it's original solder locations, It was misaligned. You may not expect the best quality from a low cost competitor however people that are new to recording might. I've reviewed and compared many mics, most are in the low cost/beginner category. This video was just pointing out an issue with MXL mics in particular. As far as better mics, my AKG P220 is my number one mic for my projects but I have a C214 that I only bring out for special occasions. I have a few Rode mics in the collection as well. One is a 249.00 boat anchor I did a quick video about it as well. Cheers!

Bruh.... If i got that mic for less than half price, the misalignment thing wouldn't bother me as long as it worked fine! But then again... you're a mic collector for aesthetics as well. Mxl 4000 and genesis 1...never tried genesis 2. Those products for me were amazing for me. For a raspy vocal mxl 4000 is stunning if willing to eq and learn it a little. Idk why but on my voice that mic had a unique bite and analog near 80s sound too it. All their mics even if babied do have an issue with their diaprhams like a wear and tear that occurs. Mics will begin to have a hiss or extended high frequency appear. Mxl 4000 and genesis are their best built feeling mics. And if we talk mxl 4000 blizzard amazing windscreen thick comes with it almost makes it worth purchase fully compatible with blue yeti and many other mics.

Hello! I just took that 990 apart. From looking at the few I have in the collection all of them have rather flimsy mic clips but they lock up ok. I expect they would fail after a few years of heavy use. Their case and grills are on the cheap side too but the electronics look good. Not sure how long they are going to last but that 990 seemed to be very old when I got it apart. Cheers!
