I've been using MXL mics for over 20 years and I have never been disappointed yet, especially for the price! These mics more than hold their own against mics costing much more. This was a smart move Sweetwater!

MXL is a solid brand. Yes they are cheap, but the ones i have owned and heard sound great. I used to have a pair of MXL 603 small condensers and they served me well for years. Very happy that sweetwater now sells them.

I have the 770 and the R40 ribbon. I use them regularly for mid side room mics on drums and often pair the R40 with an SM57 on guitar cab. Great budget options that work well.

I've owned quite a few MXL mics over my years of production. Great mics, I wish they still made the 800 Series Mic Locker. But the CR line is incredible price point aside. I would highly recommend them to anyone!

I have a large array of some of the greatest sounding mics ever from SM57s to a Telefunken ELAM 251 and i have to say, the mics in the MXL 990 bundle (990 and 991) are my go-to's for recording acoustic sources like piano and acoustic guitar. I love the color and midrange detail that the 990 gives off on the body of an acoustic or on vocals and the silky smooth top end and luscious low end of the 991. I own many small diaphragm mics from sm57s to sm137s to AT PRO37s and KM184s and i have to say, ive probably used the 991 more than any other small diaphragm Condenser. The only thing id say about the 990 and 991 is that i wouldnt trust them in front of loud sources like drums or amps, but for acoustic sources, they are amazing.

They probably just put it in another body and gave it a different name. I’m aware of a few times MXL has done that. Doesnt seem like they do away with many products, but rather rebrand them. You may want to check their current offerings of ribbons to see if that’s the case. You might be able to get the same mic albeit a different body, which of course may change the sound minimally or drastically.
