Hi Syl, again, are you planning to talk further on the T sound? The most tricky one is a flap T sound for me. It looks like there are two kinds of flap T - one is in the word MATTER where the tongue moves INWARD. This is because it moves from A to UR. And another in the word like MURDER where the tongue moves from UR toward D i.e. OUTWARD (and maybe back again). Check this out. These two must sound a little differently. What do you think

You're welcome. Thanks for watching! It's worth mentioning, however, that although it does sound a lot like one, it is different from a glottal stop. A glottal stop is when the air stops at the glottis but here, the air doesn't stop at the glottis. It stops at the point where the tongue touches the palate, just as it does when you pronounce a "t". The only difference is that the tongue doesn't release before pronouncing the "n". They do sound similar though.

Hi Syl, before your video I would say LET'S MEET IN THE MALL with flap T in MEET joining together MEET and IN. Is this option correct as well? And in SIT IN THE BACK I would also pronounce T in SIT IN as a flap T. What would you say about this? Am I wrong? My native language is Russian.

Thanks for the video! Do you know if they also do this in British English?
@SlowEasyEnglish
@SlowEasyEnglish 4 жыл бұрын
I think they tend to release the 't' and pronounce it /bʌtən/ a lot more than Americans and Canadians but they might also pronounce it as /bʌtn/. I'm not sure if they do or not though and/or in what context.

@@anaislee1082 Hi there. In a neutral, modern Southern British accent, we would say /bʌtən/ (so pronouncing that schwa sound) when we are trying to speak slowly or clearly, but in fast, natural speech, it is really common to hear people say /bʌtn/ too. This also works with kitten and written, BUT we would not, say mountain in the same way, and this is one of the ways that the British and American accents can differ. It would sound like this: /maʊntɪn/ or moun/tin. I hope this helps. :)

Hi Valery, No, you are not wrong. In those cases, using a flap t is fine too!

in mountain do we have to pronounce both n ? MouNtainN or ignore the first one only pronounce the one at the end ? Thank you~

Both n's are always pronounced.

It's possible that there is a difference in sound, but nobody would ever hear the difference anyway so it doesn't really matter. Linguists don't generally distinguish between the two either. I think you should do whichever one feels more comfortable to you. No one will ever notice.

THANKS SO MUCH!!!! But why you use the stop T in for example "sit in" or "meet in"... "cut and"..... ?? And not the flap T between the vowel sound and the T?.... this is wrong? Thanks so much
@SlowEasyEnglish
@SlowEasyEnglish 8 жыл бұрын
+Sammy Daniela Robayo Barrios You can use a flap for "sit in" and "meet in". It's just that this video is focusing on where we often use an unreleased "t" before "n". Either way would be perfectly acceptable for these. However, for "cut and paste", I feel that the unreleased "t" is much more common than the flap "t". Sometimes there's more than one way to pronounce something.
