Rachel: The symbol for the alveolar flap is ɾ. It is always voiced in American English. The reason an r-like symbol is used is that it is the same sound as that which is indicated by a single “r” in Latin-scripted languages where it is a phoneme: in Spanish, Italian, and some varieties of Portuguese, for example.

Can't thank you enough for this awesome video! I remember reducing the "what did you" combination in that video you made with Tom. It was lovely to hear you saying "Tom, what did you do today?", flapping the T in today and reducing the WDY combination. Then I realized how people would say "what did you say?", for example. But it was fantastic to a video on that. Good job, Rachel! These videos help us all to not only sound better in English, but to understand native speakers. Wish there were a channel like that for French. As my friend's friend said once, "English should not be taken for granted". The more I think I know about AmE, the more I find out interesting things such as reductions and ways to smooth out my speech. Such a lesson of humbleness as well.

Hi Rachel, Thanks for this amazing video! 🙏🙏🙏 I had a question about past perfect, Does it go through the same reduction? What had had he done? -> Whadee done What had I done? -> Whadai done? What had she done? -> Whad she done? Can you please think of any more reduction videos for this playlist? Sometimes it's really painful to understand native speakers, and your videos does help a lot!
@rachelsenglishАй бұрын
For these, I would add an extra syllable (schwa+D) to represent the extra "had". For example, "What had she done?" would become "Whadud she done?" More on dropping H in reductions like HAS and HAD here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKaxgKaIi72DnNksi=XaImLU4Wbmx77Rts

@kara__kats48659 жыл бұрын
Anas Abdulwahhab You should not reduce "what do". You should reduce "what did". The reason is that "did" has a "d" sound at the end, but "do" does not.

Hello , Rachel . I wanna thank u from my bottom of my heart for ur effort , and I wanna ask what is the difference between What did and What do when they are reduced , do they have the same sound ?
@rachelsenglish3 жыл бұрын
Hi! There is a slight difference in the final sound. Because 'did' ends with a D - you will hear that D either as a True D or an Unreleased D - you can learn the difference here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5erf5V5qd1nmac The 'do' will end with a schwa sound - that is how you can tell the difference (though it is subtle)!
