Thuirt an gobha fuirighidh mi
'S thuirt an gobha falbhaidh mi
'S thuirt an gobha leis an othail
A bh' air an dòrus an t-sàbhail
Gu rachadh e a shuirghe
'S a gheala nam botham nam botham
‘bothan a bh' aig Fionnghuala
Bheirinn fead air fulmairean
Liuthannan beaga na mara
Bheireamaid greis air an tarrainn
Na maireadh na duirgh dhuinn
Cha d'thuirt an dadan a' seo
Bheireamaid greis air an tarrainn
Na maireadh na duirgh dhuinn
The blacksmith said let us wait
The blacksmith said let us go
The blacksmith said to his grandchild
standing at the door of the barn
that he was going to go courting.
Island of bothies, of bothies
Fionnghuala’s bothies.
I'd knock spots off the birds
I'd knock spots off the hakes [fish]
little lythes [flat fish] of the sea.
We would take a while hauling them in
if our hand lines last.
We got nothing here
except noises of the hand lines.
If only carp would come
If only carp would come
or razor fish or flounder
that would take the hooks from the seaweed
if our hand lines last.

Tastefully done, well done to all involved! The video is so cleverly edited, even down to the splashes of the waves fitting in so perfectly! And of course wonderful singing. I was just wondering what John saw in the audience at 0:57. Maybe a friend fell off their chair or something?

+ANÚNA Yes, doing great thanks Michael! In August I went to Scotland (beautiful, and surprisingly sunny!) where I learned some songs in Scottish Gaelic, and now back home making good progress on my classical harp. Come to South Africa please! :)

I really like this remix. It feels a bit darker than the original, but it also seems like it has more depth. Maybe because I hear more of the bass line. A lot of intrigue. Very well done!

I love this new remix! There's a storm front bearing down on us right now, and this perfectly matches the excitement and raw power of an approaching storm in my mind.

Didn't think this could have been improved upon - I was wrong. Don't want to say best version yet as enjoy listening to the different Anuna recordings of this song but it will be hard to beat.

it's actually a gaidhlig (scottish gaelic) song from the isle of barra in scotland, about huts on an island they are seeing, hence the lyrics 'eilean nam bothan' (island of the huts), in the song they are hauling in hand lines with herring and talking about the sea birds they are seeing.

Was that a sea lion cameo? I love you guys - hilarious. FWIW, I watch your original live version of Fionnghuala daily - more than once a day usually. Really. It might be my favorite vid on youtube. :)

Is this Scottish or Irish gaelic? I first heard it on the Eir commercial, but I'm really happy to have this version to listen to instead! Wonderful and atmospheric!!
@anunachoir
@anunachoir 9 жыл бұрын
+Colleen Jones I believe the Eir commercial is a translation from its original Scots Gaelic to Irish. Personally I don't see why anyone would do that other than to try and give it an "Irish" relevance, as in its original form its pretty much perfect. But luckily Anúna don't get into such nonsense :-)

+ANÚNA Thanks! I'd read on different sites that it was Scottish and then I read it was "Ulster" Gaelic then Irish Gaelic, so I wasn't sure. Yes, the original Scottish is cool!

The men's chorale at my school is currently rehearsing Dulaman, using your rendition of it as a reference to the right notes and pronunciations, and I love all of it. These productions are simply fantastic and I can't wait to hear more. :)

My director chose this song for our Madrigal choir, any advice on how to sing that solo?
@anunachoir
@anunachoir 7 жыл бұрын
This pronunciation isn't the same as the sheet music - best to base it off the track on Spotify from the album Illumination Aidan. That has the correct pronunciation.

A fantastic stretch of a fantastic tradition. Mícheál Ó Domhnaill lives larger than life and thanks to wonderful developments like this. Knocking spots off the birds, 's cinnte sin.
@anunachoir
@anunachoir 8 жыл бұрын
+Denis Brown I'm glad you think that this is a development, but its not really a development of Irish music at all as you note, in the same way that the singular brilliance of The Bothy Band's version isn't either. Its a part rather of the Port a Bueil tradition of Scotland and the music of chorally rich countries such as Georgia and Britain. Anúna remains separate from Irish music, rather ignored at home [unfairly] and, to be honest, we've probably been better off.

Yes indeed- the book of Kells shows influence of the Picts in Scotland long long ago. You have claimed this song as your own, with many good influences also hinted from (dare I say it in my ignorance) barber shop quartets and the Beach boys as well as the Scots and the Bothies. But it is absolutely unique what you do. The remix adds nice dynamics (but it was all still there in the voices before the remix). Kudos!
