John not knowing that MG is both magic attack and magic defense hurts, and it's gonna make him a major target for field spells as things go along.

Even just having a magic defence spell makes most the difference, as they're percentage based damage reduction (or complete blocks/repels as you get late game). High speed should mean less chance of being hit by field magic, but it doesn't get lower than 20% so still being hit by 1 on 5 spells (although magic mirror or other field magic blockers will bring down to 0% hit)

Interesting note on krav maga, if taught properly you should be pressure testing the shit out of everything. There are still limits of course, but krav's goal is survival, so running away is often just as valid as incapacitating the attacker. Even for the more dangerous moves, there's usually some technique that goes with it that can be safely used in sparring (like how juijitsu can teach you to snap someone's wrist, but the set up is just as important)

In actual Israel military, it is just a two-week course to teach not even the basic hand-to-hand combat, but to instil an aggressive mind-set into new recruits to make them go to the danger, "to be the danger".
