A particular O gauge B&O locomotive had alluded me for many years since about 2005 or so. There is a story behind my hunt for the locomotive that I recently found on Trainz.com that model railroaders may find interesting. Bill B.

Good morning, Randy. Thank you for your wonderful comment. There were some difficult elements to be overcome. The one thing I would say is that when the family health problem arose it very quickly made me recognize what things were truly important. Now that things are once again looking up, I have been able to ease up and reinvest in my hobby. In the big scheme of things as long as the health problem does not again raise its ugly head, life is better than before. I am a lucky guy! Bill B.

Hi BOBXFILES2374a, thank you for the "Congrats," it is much appreciated! You know, the locomotive was more expensive than some and less expensive than others, but certainly expensive enough. I believe there were only about 125 models made in 3-rail which explains at least in part why they are so hard to find in the market today. Hi Ron, glad you stopped by and watched the video. You know we sometimes do what it is we think is necessary for the right reason, but the action can also leave a little bit of an open wound. I'm an old Marine and can act pretty tough when I have to, lol, but I don't think I had ever been so scared as when we had to deal with that medical issue and to be honest while Mary is in remission, I still am aware of the risk. I sold my railroad to get things moving so I could sell the house and give her that new adventure she wanted. I'd do it again. But now that we have relocated, and the situation is looking up, I have quietly been picking up some of my most favorite locomotives and bringing them back home. And finding the 3rd Rail S-1a, "the Big Six" was icing on the cake. Glad you stopped by, Ron, and thank you for the comment. Happy railroading! Bill B.

@@tinytowntrainstv Well T4, you do have to remember that siting in that box was my holy grail. How long did you expect me to just let that box sit there unopened, lol. Essentially, my own desire to actually see the S-1a, compelled me to get going on the video once I had decided to make it. What made this video a little easier was that the story had already been written for me. I just had to figure out how best I could tell it. As far as views go, I really do not know what to expect. Did you see that for the first time I included an End Screen? I'm kind of proud about that. I finished the one structure I had been working on and may start the other one I have shortly. May also try my hand at making a video of the process. It would just about have to be a multi-part video. If left to my own natural tendencies I am sure I could turn the video into another one of my epic feature length films, lol. But I will try not too! Have a good rest of your weekend, T4. Bill

Hi Darin, great to hear from you. Yes, I am a pretty lucky fellow to find not only the B&O S-1a, but then also the Q-4b. The Q-4b, a little 2-8-2, was a B&O mainstay and the model of it was my first brass locomotive. As it turned out it was a great runner and a favorite in my collection. Interestingly enough, what I found after disposing of my collection and all, was that I was more attached to some of my locomotives in particular than I knew. So, over the course of time I have sought out a few of my favorites. I kind of look at it like, I may have had to sacrifice them for the mission at hand, but now, like a good old Marine, I did not forget and now I am bringing at least some of them back home. Yeah, I know I sound like an old sentimentalist and perhaps am, lol. But it is fun to have found a few of my old favorites like the Q-4b. I hope you are doing well. I do want to talk with you the next time we have a chance. Dennis has asked me to kind of be responsible for our club's FB page and I would like to talk with you a bit about that. Hi Hunter! thank you for your comment. I too enjoy the brass locomotives. My limited experience with them as been with those made by 3rd Rail. They are very nice indeed. I don't know that I really have much that is rare. Some of my pieces in my locomotive roster (mostly diesels) have a little age on them, but if you look around you can usually find them. Especially with the Lionel locomotives I find that some of the older model pieces frequently become available as folks part with them for newer versions of the same or similar locomotive. As 3rd Rail does not generally repeat production of their models, some of them can be tough to find so it is rewarding when you do indeed latch on to one. Thanks again. Bill

Hi Brendan's Trains! Yes, the S-1a is a very cool locomotive for sure. If you "google" 3rd Rail Division of Sunset Models you can check out their current and proposed future models. The one thing you have to be careful about 3rd Rail locomotives is to keep in mind that they often times require a wider radius curve than typical scale Lionel or MTH locomotives. They do make some very nice equipment though. Thank you for watching the video and for commenting! Bill B.

@@brendanstrains9725 Hi Brendan's Trains. No my train room is relatively small and I designed the OM&S to have the features I most wanted. One of the things I had to compromise on was the curve radii and I was and am okay with that. My last railroad as seen in the video had much broader curves and I was able to run much larger steam locomotives. The OM&S is set in the time frame of 1955-1975 and motive power is 1st and second generation diesels. I like the S-1a just as she is sitting on a top shelf where I can look at her everyday. I think perhaps when I do my next update I may include a brief tour of the railroad as it is right now and talk a bit about the setting for the railroad. Have a good day. Bill B.

I got my holy grail last year, its the ho scale brass KTM Trevithick locomotive. Only 200 where ever made, I had to battle for it in a online live auction, and I refused to back down until I was the winner as the price got higher and higher... Needed some re assembly and still needs some repairs to the paint work, but it runs well and is complete. I have hunted for it since 2013, I was 18. Over that time I only seen 4 come up for sale (that's including mine). You can find a running video of it, I plan to shoot a better one, but afaik, its the ONLY video available on the internet of this model, just getting pictures is limited as it is.

I say Wow, yourself, Mark, that is a wonderful comment! Where to start? Mark, I agree with you that one would think they would hate to sell their trains, but when a loved one is involved in a life and death situation what really matters takes on a deeper meaning. I did not know at the time what direction things were going to go. What I did know was that I wanted to give my wife at least one new adventure. I have though, and my wife understands, that after the fact, it has at times been painful and at times, I experienced bouts of grief. I learned that in a sense my railroad and the trains had always been a part of the family as funny as that might sound. I will also tell you that since that time I have replaced a few of my past favorite locomotives. I never dreamed I would actually come across the B&O S-1a 2-10-2 and then it happened. I about fell out of my seat. Sunset 3rd Rail really did do a great job with the S-1a, but they typically do. I love Lionel trains, but I came to really appreciate the work of Scott Mann and 3rd Rail. Yes, Mark, all of the model railroad footage is of the old railroad. If I remember correctly, it was 13' x 43' with a small "L" at one end. It was a very nice space. Except for a couple spur tracks the minimum radius for curves and switches was O72. And I too really enjoy Trainz! Thank you again Mark for the thoughtful comment. I appreciate you! Oh, and about being in the mood for trains and video making, I absolutely understand. I think I mentioned in the video that I was burning out, losing steam is how I may have put it. Something I have learned over time is that I have to work to keep things in balance. It is good to push once in a while, but you do not want to make your hobby work. After I retired I kind of did that (turned the hobby into work) and at first it was just fine, I made a lot of progress, but after a while it was detrimental to both my enjoyment of the hobby and to me, I believe. Enjoy the hobby and don't feel bad if you feel you need to slow down or step back for a bit. That's how I feel about it now. Bill B.

Hi Bryan, I may have misspoken as I was building my former railroad when 3rd Rail introduced the S-1a and I was unable to latch on to one at that time (around 2005 or so). There were only about 125 3-rail models made. What I wanted to communicate was that the S-1a being a 2-10-2 would not negotiate the O36 curves on my current railroad, the Ozark Midland & Southern. It requires a O54 minimum radius curve. It is for that reason that the S-1a is currently displayed on my bookcase. The other locomotive in the box was a 3rd Rail B&O Q-4b which I did have on the former railroad and subsequently sold. It was a favorite so now that we have relocated to our new home, I bought another one. I guess you could say I missed it. Thanks, Bryan, for watching the video and asking the questions. I do hope you will continue to stay tune for future developments. Bill B.

Good morning, Ricky! Sorry I have not responded sooner to your comment. I spent much of yesterday finishing up on my Trainapalooza video that will publish later today. Thank you, for the congratulations. I had been looking for the S1a model for a number of years when the B&O was a prime interest. Never did find it at the time. There were only I believe 175 3-rail models made so generally speaking they do not show up in the 2nd hand market very often. So, years later, after I have relocated and begun work on a new smaller railroad, I am finally able to pick one up. Well as you know I am still tickled to have it. I'd not run it since buying it so knowing the size of Jason's railroad, I took it with me and sure enough thanks to Jason, it got some good run time. My Mid Atlantic Railway System (MARS), was featured in the January 2015 CTT. The cover shot was also taken on the layout by Dennis Brennan after we (primarily Dennis) modified the scene to a winter scene specifically for the cover of that issue. Working with Dennis was another model train highlight for me. He is both a model craftsman and a photographer. Real good guy. With regard to the MTH MKT SD40-2, just keep looking, if it is out there, I bet you will find one. Take care. Bill B.

He turned around and saw a headlight getting brighter and the tracks started to rumble. He got off the tracks and hid behind a bush.Whst came into view was a B&O big six.Train stopped the crew had a ghostly blue glow to them. One got off and looked like he throwing a switch.Man got back on the train.Fireman opened the firebox.Whst he heard were screams. What sounded like people being burned alive.Train started moving again and just disappeared.Young man filled with terror ran back home. When he got back home the family could see.He was so upset and scared. They asked him what was wrong with him.He just kept it to him self.

Hi Frank, good morning! Well. it wasn't quite that bad, lol, but I agree it was not easy. That is why I asked some friends to do it for me. I just posted a couple of photos of the old railroad just this morning on the Channel's "Community" page that you might enjoy seeing. The OM&S has now filled the void. Have a nice weekend. Bill

Hi John, I'm glad you enjoyed it. By in large it was a fun video to make. It did have a happy ending. I enjoy building things too. I am not a scratch builder or a real craftsman, but I do enjoy building kits. I just finished building one structure and have another one in the hopper. I may try to do a video(s) as I build this next kit. It does seem that our hobby really is all about building. I hope your day is a good one. Bill B.

holy grail tell the story

Hi, Bubba HoTep. Honestly, I believe the story is told in the video although perhaps in a disjointed way. I tried to make the video interesting as I told the story. Well anyway, in short, the “Big Six” locomotive was a mainstay of the B&O during the steam era. The B&O was one of the roads I modeled on my previous railroad. A model of the “Big Six” was produced in very small quantity by Sunset 3rd Rail and I missed purchasing when the model was released. Over the years I search high and low for one of the models without success. Because the model had alluded me for so long it became my collector’s holy grail. So years later, after the railroad had been sold and disassembled sure enough I came across one. As you could see in the video I was ecstatic. I hope that helps to answer your inquiry. Bill
