Ambrose Bierce a veteran of the Civil War, and writer of note, had a fascination with death, and PTSD as a result of his war experience. This short story is included in "The Works of Ambrose Bierce" where perhaps his most publicized short story, "An Incident at Owl Creek Bridge" is included. We meet the protagonist Peyton Farquahr with his neck in a noose on Owl Creek Bridge moments before his execution as a Confederate spy. We travel with him as he journeys back to his home, and his loved ones. Peyton Farquahr was a civilian who loved his family, and his state which had seceded from the union.
