No quarterback can succeed with Riley’s play calling unless they are scrambling Heisman level player . Lincoln Riley has never run the ball three times in a row - never- so many times opponents can safely assume it’s a pass rush 3 drop cover two back deep and or crash both ends . Heltons teams were worse undisciplined etc but even Ted tollnerceasntbyhisbpstgetic a play caller.

We didn't see that multi-option base play thing with the jet sweep + RB handoff + QB keeper. Instead, we saw the reversion to the standard RPO and except for a handful of plays, a very limited playbook, as if he were calling plays for Moss. Thanks, Marc, for the instant reaction show! I think Mason Murphy committed both of our penalties…the second a block in the back (more of a love tap?) on a screen to the right. There is SO much to unpack in this game. The problem with the refs allowing more hand fighting and Jersey tugs, they sucked on the non-call when the defender grabbed Makai with BOTH hands on a key 3rd and long in the second half. I’m thinking maybe calling PI more closely is better than trying to determine where the FLUID “line”is on when to throw the flag or not.🤔

Good thing USC stuck to just running the football.... Not. Not the sharpest take here. For starters, SC, after a slew of big losses, thrillingly came back late to win its second game in a row with its new QB, who looked improved from his first start - and, crucially, Came Through in the clutch (and all night, really) in spectacular fashion. SC's Defense - despite lapses - also got Critical stops. The club fought through a teamwide flu outbreak, and Overcame. UCLA's no powerhouse - but, as is well known, all bets are off in this rivalry (and this year, especially, we've seen all kinds of crazy upsets in college football). With the win SC has a restored sense of Mission and Morale, as well as a tested new Leader. The victory not only gives USC a boost ahead of facing ND, it makes the season-ending matchup Meaningful (playing for a bowl berth). Etcetera. This game was, in fact, a Classic. To come away from a game like tonight's with merely a simplistic, ho-hum, negative take simply shows one isn't paying attention. In any event, getting back to the Trojans ... Someone needs to say it: Maiava is Caleb Williams. What the hell was Moss doing starting for 3/4 of the season? THIS was Riley's Real failing this season - giving Moss too many chances to come around; it was Not the fact that he didn't call more Run plays (A. He DID call plenty of run plays; B. He's had highly successful offenses for 20 years; he might know a thing or two about coaching games). Tonight, the Entire Winning Drive was passes - including the excellent (and inexcusably underused) trick-play double-pass to set up Maiava's Williamsesque scramble-and-throw to a toe-tapping, last-possible-second-ball-securing Ja'Kobi Lane - who redeemed himself (briefly) for a costly miss earlier (later he'd botch an attempted one-hander that could have been caught in the end zone - SC's FOURTH missed would-be TD on the evening). It's rather negligent, for a reporter (like the Times' Ryan Kartje, for instance), to simply say the Trojans came up short on three trips to the red zone without observing WHY they walked away with only field goals. Maiava had TWO Sure TD passes go right through receivers' hands, another one wiped out by uncalled pass interference, and a third-down conversion slip through Lane's hands (as referenced above). Yes, these things are Ugly - but nothing New with these Trojans, and at least the Cause of the ugliness isn't obscure, as it has been to many this season who looked to play-calling as the culprit - when the Real reason was staring them in the face. Not only did the pass play-calls work (as usual), the Passes (UNusual for USC this season) were executed well. That's all Riley's been asking for - that players run his plays properly. The coach deserves credit for taking all the heat this season from frothing critics (who've somehow been unable to see what's before their eyes), never throwing players (QBs, pass-catchers) under the bus - when the whole time it's been Moss and butter-fingered receivers screwing things up. But never Makai Lemon - who showed once again that he's the Trojans Receiver Room MVP. He seems to have caught every pass thrown his way this season - and even some that Weren't; and now he's shown the Irish a new wrinkle they'll have to deal with: Sometimes he might Catch-and-Throw!
@PhatLvis2 күн бұрын
*It was actually a FOURTH-down (not 3rd-) would-be conversion Lane missed. Which brings up another nice aspect of last night's contest: Riley's finally getting some chutzpah (going for it on fourth-downs, calling trick plays), though he needs to protest Bad or Non-Calls more. The whole offense looked quite good - nice protection from the line (and a QB who could Improvise - not force a panicked throw, or take an unneccessary sack - when that protection broke down); more good run-blocking (except on 3rd-down in the red zone), etc. And the continued missed catches (easily SC's most persistent foible this season - aside from Branch's curious and vexing sophomore season no-show) at least weren't happening on passes right in the numbers.

I will agree on your opening statement, as of "now" Jayden is not the answer. We need a high end QB in the portal, MM is probably gone, Maiava is erratic and we cant gamble on Longstreet being a Freshman starter, I want him to be, but we need insurance. Great win, Marc. SC and OU became bowl eligible on the same night. I am NOT among Sooner fans who hope to play SC in a bowl game. Trojans have the better team this year. Boomer.

I hate to say you were right. Riley is a jellyfish. Did not try to power one in when in the red zone. Couldn’t stand it turned off the game. Like watching 7 on7 football. Notre Dame 40 SC 3.

Couple holding plays on usc in the end zone that were not called ! 2 of them ! Possibly 3 !
@chadwilcox69102 күн бұрын
A couple? There was holding all over the place and at least 4 PIs not called. The Big10 refs make this impossible to watch. It’s not football

Hey old man, Jayden Maiava is the future of USC. He'll be QB1 next season. He's just warming up in his second game. Miller Moss loses us the last 2 games if he played. Get used to pronouncing his name Mai-ah-vah

JM will be qb1 if there isn't a true qb competition. He's not the answer.

Miller would have put up more points O lines blocking was not very good overall..

I remember when Moss led us to 3 points in first half lol

Miller deserved a chance to keep his job. To miss the starts against UCLA and Notre Dame is really unjust. Against a really lackluster Bruins squad, it’s clear Moss was not the problem and he was scapegoated by a failing head coach.

19-13 win over an unranked UCLA....😂 While Oklahoma handles and destroys #7 Alabama and cripples their playoff hopes and dreams. #CrimsonClash #LOWTIDE! #USCISWASHED. Where are the little west coast liberals who wanted to talk last week? 😂 because im still here!
@DontbeahaterbeaHatton2 күн бұрын
I'm not a West Coast liberal but I'll give you the point that Oklahoma finally looked good on offense and put together a complete game under vulnerable Venebles. Congratulations, we have the same record this year. #500=500. #NOPLAYOFFS. #OWNTHATMEDIOCRITY

@DontbeahaterbeaHatton I Love knowing some of you aren't Liberal knowing Mark isn't one either. USC is just not even in the same comparison with OU when it comes to our strength of schedules. And on top of the injuries we have, Oklahoma is something else when it comes to mediocrity 🤣

@local.okc.gymrat Agreed. Who we play, matters. We all know Riley is not the guy. He's only another bad season away from being given his long walk off the Santa Monica pier.

Riley is the worst OC. Called predictable generic plays over and over. Easy to defend. He ran the same three exact plays in the red zone that were horrible, predictable and failed. He got away from the run, never ran Maiava, never ran RPO, etc. Does not know how to call plays to his players’ strengths. It’s ridiculous! It’s worse than Helton! wtf is wrong with this guy! He is a huge liability!
