Loved this video, Tristan, and I love Gold Butte. I've been several times, starting before it was a National Monument. I think it is worthy of National Park status, but would hate to see it overrun. I camped in my motor home at Whitney Pocket and went to most of the key features, but never the town of Gold Butte. That region of Nevada has many little known places worth visiting. If you haven't already, check out the following: Buffington Pocket near Valley of Fire; the Fire Bowl near Lake Mead; Owl Canyon near Lake Mead; Grapevine Canyon; Upper and Lower Arrow Canyon (separated by a dam) for neat petroglyphs; St. Thomas, an old Mormon town once covered by Lake Mead, where the Powell Expedition ended back in the day.

See. Now this is why I find your channel so fascinating. This, where you are now and how you got there, is ALMOST exactly how myself and a group of acquaintances discovered Lake Powell. We were exploring some desert trails slash roads believing we were going deeper and deeper into the desert, when we came upon an oasis, at first, then realized it was Lake Powell. But that first moment we came upon a similar cove and we couldn't see the water extending into the lake, we assumed otherwise. We felt like, The First People, or just had that feeling of discovery, if you will. We'd come upon a paradise, and then camped out there for a few days, exploring the surroundings by foot. Until then had always poo-pooed the desert as being unremarkable. However, it was Spring and the desert was alive with all sorts of color with everything blooming. It was one helluva wonderful time! (and discovered how easy it was to get stuck in the sand, that was near the lake)

I'm visited a fair amount of this part of the world, Lake Mead, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, the usual stuff. What I love about your videos is that you go to corners I'll never visit, it provides so much context. Great stuff.

Used to go out here all the time about 20 years ago. Not as much now. Sometimes, when someone comes into Vegas who doesn't want to do Vegas things. After they made it a national monument, they blocked off areas I used to go, and it attracted more visitors. The trip down to the lake can get a little sketchy , especially after some heavy rains.

@@SUVRVing Regarding shoe wear: If the rubber is a bit sticky then the softer rubber is going to wear more quickly, there's no getting around it... but that's a worthwhile trade-off for more secure footing, especially in slick-rock country. Thx for the recommendation.

What an interesting place to break in your new shoes. And "Of course, you're the only one there"... that's why I enjoy your channel so much. All my other bookmarks are for Overlanders, which, at 71 years of age, I have become. And even though my modified 4Runner has replaced my legs for the most part in my adventures, my FEET still need attention. After watching a previous video back in September when you mentioned those shoes, we did a lot of hiking on our October trip and upon coming back, I ordered a pair of those La Sportiva Wildcats. They are the most amazing shoes I've ever owned. I also purchased your book Hiking Arches National Park. This may sound "opinionated", but I'm sure I'll be wearing those shoes the next time I visit Arches. Thank you for your dedication in bring all of us these adventures.

I have resided in Vegas for over 45 years but my family has many, many wonderful camping trips on both Lake Mead and Mt. Charleston. Although Lake Mead is brutally hot in the summer, fall, winter and spring provides enjoyable weather for camping, fishing and lots of wildlife sightings. And of course, boating. Wonderful video!

Gold Butte N.M. is a very cool place , if it is ever turned in to a Park it would take away some of the wonder of the place. The lack of people and the vastness with the historic nature both native and white-man will bring me back, we were there in 2018 and watching this shows me there is more signage and more designated parking spots then our prior visit. I would have to agree, "WOW" I love the idea of anticipating your future generations following in your foot steps through the summit logs, do you keep a diary of sorts to provide them with a list of targets? What were the animals crossing the road at 33:25? I always appreciate the extra "miles" you go in filming your hikes. Placing and moving the camera must double your effort but, it is truly appreciated.

Wow!!! Tristan, did you see the incredible large face on the rock at 26:13-18? Center right, maybe 10 ft high. Really full lips. A nose above the lips and two eyes! Incredible!! Blew me away! I love all your posts. Been watching for a couple years. I’m a big fan. I love rock art so this episode is a favorite. Kudos to you: I’ve seen dozens of petroglyphs videos on other channels and seen hundreds of “goat” etchings but you are the first to say they must be Rocky Mountain Bighorns, which is what I’ve known to be true just because of the shape of the animals and their horns. Go take a look at that face and thanks so very much for each of your videos over the years.

Valley of Fire. I had a short drive thru in 2019 as the sun was setting. The antelope eating by the side of the road & didn't care about the passing cars. They were starving & eating madly. Covid ruined my visiting parts of NV. Also those horrid fires in CA that came into NV. Really brought me to a stop.

I enjoyed your video very much, I've been to some of the places you were at. We camped at Gold Butte a dozen times or more. We rode mostly east of where you were. The red sandstone at Gold Butte, Valley Of Fire, Red Rock Canyon and elsewhere in this part of Nevada is known as the Aztec Sandstone, and is the equivalent of the Navajo Sandstone in Utah. It does have a bit of different character than the Navajo in Zion, resulting from all the crustal stretching and faulting that has occured in the region.
