A sweet treat for that sweet person in your life, perhaps? 💕
In this video, I’ll be cooking up a 1940s UNCOOKED chocolate cake, a classic wartime recipe that doesn’t require any baking! During the war, ingredients like eggs and butter were often in short supply, so this no-bake recipe was a clever way to make a sweet treat with minimal resources. Join me as I follow this retro recipe step-by-step and see how it turns out! Will it be as tasty as it sounds, or will it be a total flop? Watch to find out!

In Denmark we have a very similar christmas candy that was invented during the WWII rationing. Eccept we use oakmeal grains in sted of breadcrums and we make them into small balls, more like a chocolate truffle in sted of a full cake.

We made something similar when I was growing up in the U.S. in the 1970s. My mom called them No-Bake Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies. Sometimes I still make them at Christmas and everybody gobbles them up. You can also add some peanut butter to the mixture so they come out kind of tasting like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. 🤎

one tip .....when a recipe calls for vanilla, always put it in off the heat, at the last, you cook out all the flavor otherwise, so make it the last thing after it is off the heat.

Put your spoon in boiling water, it's much easier and safer for you. I'm doing slimming world so I'm going to try and work out the syns. If the syns work out ok, I will be doing this recipe for sure. I use a sweetener that is the nearest to sugar available, so maybe I will be able to have a chocolate cake 😅. When you think that during the war such treats were extremely scarce then this would have been an amazing birthday cake. A little obviously goes a long way. Thanks for sharing, kind regards Angeline ❤️ xx

In my family in New Zealand we call this Chocolate slice. We have been baking something exactly like this since i was a little girl. We mostly bake this on special occasions or bake a lot of it at Christmas time to eat and have as gifts for family and friends. Instead of using the bread crumbs we use what we call Super Wine Biscuits (so your classic plain vanilla biscuit). Use your basic icing sugar, vanilla essence, little knob of butter, 1-2 tablespoons of hot water and coco powder for the chocolate icing. As a cute little touch we also add sprinkles on the top! :)

This is very similar to No Bake Chocolate Cookie/Balls. I love how resourceful people became with their recipes. I also adore the pronunciation of margarine: marg-er-een. It sounds eloquent in comparison to our American margar-IN. My grandmother always called it oleo.

I believe the reason why it was so sweet is I think you used drinking chocolate powder rather then cocoa powder. Very sorry if you didn't - I just noticed the tin. Cocoa powder is extremely bitter so the syrup would of cut through it. Looks great in any case :)

@raraavis7782 4 күн бұрын
I think you might be right. It looked suspiciously light colored. We're used to recipes calling for 'baking cacao' these days, but they might have just called it 'cocoa powder' back then, because pre-sweetened concoctions weren't a thing yet.

I love watching your channel as it very much reminds me of my childhood in the 1960s. You see, my grandfather was born in 1874, and my mom was born in 1924. We lived with my grandmother, and we inherited her household items when she passed. As a result, as you can imagine, the 1940s lasted well into the 1960s at our house. That my dad was career US Army officer who had been in WW II in Europe probably helped to keep us on course. Everything I see in your videos, such as the iron bed and gas stove were part of my childhood. I feel right at home!

I found your channel last week and immediately sunscibed! That cake looks delicious. My go-to,fail proof, cake recipe is the " depression " cake. It is said to be named both for it's era , and the fact that it can be mixed in one pan. The wet ingredients are added to 3 depressions made in the already combined dry ingredients (oil, vanilla, vinegar) before being covered with water. Give a stir and pop in the oven. It is lovely. Thank you for the beautiful and informative content. Love from British Columbia, Canada 😊

I grew up with a mother and grandmother who regularly made Bread Pudding from stale bread. Packed full of dried fruit and dusted with sugar. "Bread & Butter pudding is different, but also good. I also remember when the only rice I knew, was rice pudding. "Pudding rice" and milk baked in the oven in an oblong blue and white enamel tray. With the skin on top burnt black around the edged.

This is very similar to chocolate tiffin which is made with biscuit crumbs. It's Prince Williams favourite and he had it as his grooms cake at his wedding.

This sounds similar to a chocolate biscuit cake, substituting the cookie crumbs for bread crumbs.

If you dip your spoon in the melted margarine before measuring the honey, the honey will slide right off.

New to the channel and thrilled you popped up in my YT feed. Things are a little dicey right now in the US, 😢. What is vanilla essence? Is it vanilla extract? And golden syrup? Honey? Forgive me if you’ve covered this. I’ll be going back to binge. Thanks! Edited: you are all bad influences, lol. I just ordered three cookbooks from a UK independent bookstore; one ration cookbook and two depression era cookbooks. Boy, I adore you all, thanks for the recommendations! No shipping charge to the US. 😘

Golden sirup is a byproduct of sugar processing (from sugar beets). It's basically slightly caramelized sugar sirup with a bit of added lemon juice. Which keeps it from crystalizing, as I understand it. I personally wouldn't replace it with honey, as I don't like to sweeten cacao with honey just generally. I would rather use maple syrup, instead. Or you could make golden sirup at home. The recipes are very easy to follow and it works as an inexpensive all purpose sirup for different dishes.
